Moving on, a long way from home

The AB-H is reporting that Willie Martinez has been hired as the new secondary coach at Stanford.  (Although I doubt it’s for his expertise in defending a Lane Kiffin-coached offense.)

I’m happy for CWM if this is true. I always thought he was a good DB coach but that being DC was just too much for him. Being DC negatively affected his DB coaching. This way he also will not be on the other sideline from CMR on a regular basis and, more importantly, going head to head in recruiting (Willie is a good recruiter and knows Georgia). I also hope there is no bad blood between them.

We should all be so lucky as to retire in Palo Alto.

Not wanting to hijack the thread, but did everyone notice that Hutson Mason, the QB who committed to UGA recently, was named a Parade All-American the other day. This kid threw for 56 TDs and over 4,000 yards his senior year and owns every state record in the book. He went to UGA because he loves the school and has always wanted to go there. I’m betting he is the real deal and the long-term solution at QB. You can see him on the TV show The Ride (he was one of the players selected to film the show).

      Lest we forget, Mayor:

Joe Cox was 31-0, threw for 4500 yds as a senior, with 66 TD’s and 5(!) ints.

Now let’s not beat up on Joe Cox. Last year was his de facto freshman season. If Staff never showed up in Athens Joe Cox would have made all his mistakes, like Stafford did, in 2006 and been fine after that. He wasn’t going pro early so we might have been better off last year because Joe Cox would have been a 3 year starter and probably would have lit it up. I don’t know the team won-loss record would have been much better because of the defensive and kick coverage problems, though. Maybe a couple of more wins in ’09. But we may not have been as good in ’07 and’08. Who will ever know? It’s all water under the bridge any way.

Wasn’t piling on Joe, but those stats gave me great hope last year.

But having watched how poorly he performed against SEC competition, I can’t agree that he would have been “fine” given more starts, or that UGA would be more successful.

After all, he has a chronic arm problem that required Wednesday practices off all season.

I sincerely hope he enjoys a successful coaching career.

Cox was also throwing to MoMass and Hakeem Nicks in HS….saw many if their games, and all he really had to do was throw it up there for them to go get it. I’d say 80% of his passes were 5-10 yard slants that those 2 guys would turn into huge gainers. There just weren’t many HS kids who could cover those guys.

Actually, Mayor, Mason didn’t grow up a Dawg fan and did not always want to come here. We weren’t going to offer a QB, then thought wiser of it. He noted the raving reviews Stafford’s college teaching got in Detroit as the primary reason he chose the Dawgs.

But don’t pass over the kids we’ve got there now. We’ve got a kid wearing #11 who will be the QB for the next 3-4 years. You can bank on it. Murray’s going to be special. It’s going to be a fun ride. But we’re certainly glad to have Mason for the future.
