Did he say anything that was untrue?? We get it these folks are in the public eye, it is part of the job, he is paid millions to put up with, etc, but they are still human. How many of us could keep out mouth shut when the whole world has an opinion on how we are doing our job opinions that may or may not be well informed. Should he try to keep that frustration to himself and not be too sensitive? Sure, but that is easier said than done. Hell, the blogosphere gets it’s collective panties in a wad whenever it gets called out (see repeated “arena” references), yet we expect the guy in the public spotlight, whose career is on the line to shut up and like it when he is
critiqued.

For the record, I’m on Team Mark Richt. I certainly wavered on that when I was walking out of Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville, but among my circle of Bulldog fans, I’m the Richt apologist. That said, I don’t think it serves his purposes to be engaged with fans in any sort of negative fight, whether it’s calling out the internet commenterazzi or any of that. I know that he gets asked all of these questions about the wacky fans, but he should sidestep them. I think that, more than anything else, that’s what brought Jim Donnan down. It’s simply not a good sign when your coach develops rabbit ears. Let someone in the AA monitor the internet to make sure there’s no slander or rumor out there that hurts the program and stay out of it.

I hear ya and agree that he should try to bite his tongue as much as possible. As you say, I suspect he was baited/asked the question about Internet chatter and did not just volunteer out of the blue to go on the record with these thoughts.

A) may not be true and;
B)call into question everything from the marital status of his parents to his IQ and committment and “passion for the game”but;
C) Is just supposed to pretend he did not read (or have read to him) that stuff?

Mark having heard from the daily intel that no one new has any pending criminal charges or civil complaints against them, feels somewhat better in Day Four of the Seven-Day Cease-Fire.
So much so that he decides to use the internet to callout those on the internet who gain courage without displaying proper ID and thinks maybe a virtual The Real ID Act would help put a lid on the so-called beneficial suggestions from the undocumented thereby lowering the noise in the system so Mark can hear himself think.

a candidate as a Lexicon entry for the undocumented who are not man enough to not give extremely useful and beneficial suggestions about the program, the coaches, the players, the play-calling, and the losses.

I agree with CMR. I think most of the negativity (you know, the negativity that the Finebaums of the world use to claim that Dawg fans want Richt gone) comes from message board fodder. If our coach actually started listening to fans and made a gameplan around what we collectively said, I would be horrified.
That arena comment never bothered me. They were kinda right.

It’s not exactly a new insight. Anyone who’s ever been in a comment section anywhere on the internet or read pretty much any message board knows this.
I did just come up with an idea for a rom-com. It’s about two dawgventers called Bulldog Joe and Bulldog Jane who constantly flame each other on the board. They meet in real life and hit it off, only to discover the other’s internet identity. Can their budding relationship survive?

I think Charles and whatever her name is from Reeltown, the Auburn fans, already did that on Finebaum. The difference was that neither had an internet identity because they didn’t know Comcast had service in Reeltown.

I’ve always liked the “in the arena” quote too .long before Richt ever used it. Its a Teddy Roosevelt quote and it makes a good point that it’s easy for those who don’t or can’t do something to tell others how to do it and you shouldn’t put a lot of stock in what those types say. It shouldn’t be taken to an extreme though where you reject all criticism period. I think we do a better job on here than a lot of boards of challenging baseless criticism. I agree with him also that many people would not say to someone’s face what they say behind “Bulldog Joe”.
