Considering how much Auburn fans hooted and hollered when Bama fans complained that the Albert Means case was the result of a vast conspiracy on the part of rival SEC coaches, you’d think they’d be a little more circumspect regarding Camgate . . . but perhaps not. Self-awareness is a precious commodity in this conference, methinks.
On that note, I love the dude in the comments thread of the linked post who insists that the real crime is not taking improper benefits but the things that people stoop to in UNCOVERING said improprieties. At this rate it’s only a matter of time before ” . . . and I believe that snitches get stitches” gets tacked on to the end of the Auburn Creed.

I always thought the way ESPN handled HarrickGate was pretty ridiculous, and about half the stuff brought to light was either entirely bogus or irrelevant. (Note: The infamous “how many points is a 3-pointer worth” exam was a friggin joke…the class had to have an exam of some sort because of University policy; actual grade-determinative work was done earlier in the semester.)
That said, Harrick was slime when we got him and we’re better for forcing him out.

I heard a rumor at work today. Apparently Pat Dye is on the BOD of a bank in Alabama thats been forgiving loans to Auburn players families. Also, there are allegedly casinos who were rigging their machines to pay out Auburn players instead of directly distributing money. Obviously not sure if any of this is true, but I have a bad feeling the endgame to all this nonsense is that Auburn exposes everyone.

the casual reader will casually dismiss what you wrote above re: the gambling. But the fact is that Milton McGregor is the very wealthy individual that essentially has a monopoly on the Alabama gambling business. What’s interesting is that he is also on the BOD of Colonial Bank (now BB&T) – the same bank which Bobby Louder has a large interest. The rumor is that the Feds have wire-tapped recordings of McGregor that will implicate him in what you describe above. Another shameless booster doing everything they can to win.
You see, that’s the Auburn way.

Now that our game with Auburn is over, I am at a point where I doubt any of these issues (Fairley & Cam Newton) are going to affect us now. If the FBI is looking into the connection with gambling then it is serious. Though it will not come out anytime in the immediate future unless there is an obvious smoking gun.
Also, while Cecil’s church and its foreclosure issues were part of the initial focus of the probe, we have heard very little about it recently. Is it possible that while MSU needed to pony up $100-$180k, all Auburn had to do was find a helpful contractor so Cecil could bring the church up to code? What are some of the best known majors at Auburn? Which industries do they have a large number of alumni?
Architecture? Real Estate? Construction Engineering?
Heck, Cecil’s church is just a little over 75 miles from the Auburn Campus. You think there might be a few Auburn grads with ties to the contractor industry in that part of Western Georgia? No money probably even needed to change hands.

SC Dawg and JaxDawg are right. What they are referring to was pulled from an LSU message board chalk full of LSU and BAMA fans commenting on this investigation. I hope it’s true, but I’m also keeping in mind who the sources are. Here is the gist copied and pasted from it….Everybody kept asking how the FBI was involved, well that question has been answered. The FBI has just busted up an illegal gambling ring in the state of Alabama. In the course of that investigation, the FBI had wire taps on a bunch of phones. Apparently, one of the guys, named Milton MacGregor (Auburn alum and big booster) made some calls where he was arranging the money for Newton, and also for Dyer. Now he, along with about 10 other guys are in federal custody, and the information from the FBI has been turned over to the NCAA.

I am shocked and appalled that politicians would take money for their votes. Why that is just not done in the good old US of A. I mean next you will be telling me that alumni of a university would actually give money to a player’s father to get his son to play for their school. Say it ain’t so Joe. (obscure reference to Shoeless Joe Jackson and Black Sox scandal.) Once the FBI got in it was the end for Auburn. You best not lie to them cause they will Martha Stewart your butt. The SEC will look worst than they already do. Win at all costs is a heck of a Conference Motto.
