It didn’t take long for this particular shoe to drop.
… Georgia Tech’s “quarterback of the future” – Dennis Andrews Jr. of Tallahassee, Fla. — told the AJC that the NCAA ruling “will probably open up things a little bit” with his recruiting.
Andrews is the son of former Florida State fullback Dennis Andrews, and said his uncle Carlos Andrews played safety for Alabama when it was under NCAA probation. The younger Andrew committed to Georgia Tech after attending camp last month.
“It may affect my commitment; I’m going to talk to my dad about it and then we’ll see what we want to do,” Andrews told the AJC. “I know my dad isn’t a fan of NCAA probation at all. They had a bad experience with it when my uncle was at Alabama.”
You’d expect probation to be a rich source of negative recruiting against Georgia Tech, but does anyone actually bother with bad mouthing the Jackets on the recruiting trail? It kinda seems superfluous.

Western Carolina and Florida International do have to fight Tech hard for those recruits.

This is just an”insurance” move.Does anyone think this is in the young mans best interests? Probably have similar results as the Bean to NT. I was looking forward to seeing if the kid could garner some success at LB.

Samuel will never be an SEC running back. At best he is a reserve at that position for his whole career. Whereas at LB he actually might get to be a starter, gain accolades and be drafted. Another bad personnel decision out of Athens. I wonder how Grantham feels about this? This may have ramifications beyond just 1 player getting moved.

Or maybe Grantham signed off on it. Knowing that Samuel was not going to get serious playing time at LB anyway…Or maybe Grantham is super pissed and will be giving the choke sign from the Defensive side of the field at every practice with Samuel.
But yeah, serious, ominous implications…far reaching ramifications..
Is it such a big deal for a guy to do a little cross training to provide a little depth? He probably isnt going to take serious reps away from anyone who is going to start and he provides just a little insurance.

It’s not such a big deal it just looks bad. It looks desperate and unprepared and unfair to Samuel. And it probably looks worse than it is b/c you’re coming off a 6-7 season. If we were 10-3 last year it wouldn’t seem near as bad. I don’t know, is preception reality? And how may 3rd string running backs does one team need – as I’m sure someone has said before me…And worst of all, what if it turns out to be a waste of talent. That goes right back to this coaching staff.

Not that his career trajectory thus far seemed to include the NFL, but I do wonder if this is the nail in that coffin for this selfless young man. Perhaps he had an outside shot at LB.

You never know. The guy was young when he played before. Now he’s had a year as a redshirt and I understand that he is a real physical specimen. I would have liked to see what he could do at LB. Nobody in D-IA thought enough of Jesse Tuggle to even offer him a scholarship.

I concur. After watching his slow progress as a RB, I was really hopeful he would find his niche at LB and possibly create an opportunity for himself at the next level. He might surprise many of us with a second shot at RB, but Grantham’s endorsement is still ringing in my ears (calling him “explosive” at LB). Sounds like CTG wanted to see what we did – going live on D in games that mattered.

Samuel was a freak athlete and 5 star recruit. He’s a smart kid. No significant injuries. Coming in, I’d heard nothing but great things about this kid. But now he’s going to backup a true freshman RB (Crowell)!? With all our issues, we can’t find a place where Samuel kid can really help? I sure hope our coaches aren’t wasting his talent (see Moreno, Knowshon).

Paragraph 13, Subsection A of the NCAA ruling against Tech states that the words “honesty” and “integrity” must appear in sarcastic quotation marks when used in connection with Georgia Tech for the next four years, if not beyond.

Gee. I guess if Johnson pulls the kid’s scholarship offer over him now wanting to look at other schools, the kid will just have to decide from the 20 or so offers he has already plus those he’ll get by the end of next season. Tough break kid. That Paul Johnson really knows how to recruit.
