Chip Towers talks with Todd Grantham about recruiting. You’ll get some tasty Dawg porn, and a quote like this gives you a feel for what impressed Richt when they first interviewed:
Grantham said he had opportunities to return to college ball before the Bulldogs came calling in 2010. But it was Georgia’s access to an endless stream of talent that got him excited about joining Mark Richt’s staff.
“In pro ball, you have a select number of guys you look at every year and you spend a couple of months dissecting those guys and ranking them,” Grantham said. “The thing that excited me about coming here is, if you go back and look, they’ve been really good on defense here and they’ve had some really good players drafted. I know the type of players they have within of five-hour radius of this school. So the components were there. To me, that was something that was intriguing and excited me about taking this job.”
It ain’t rockey surgery. Imagine what Grantham would have done with the 2000 defense.
Safe to say I am excited about the 2012 defense.

The 2000 D under Gibbs was pretty good. But before that, not much.

I like CTG more and more ever day. Just when I think I can’t possibly like him any more than I already do, he says or does something that makes me like him even more. I have a feeling that if he stays in Athens long enough, his reputation will be right up there with Erk. That’s rarefied company indeed.

“will be right up there with Erk” Wait, what happened to Van whatshisname…who, I read right here, was the greatest of the great.

Grantham always shows us a glimpse of what Georgia could become with top notch coaching.

If only our head coach were equally inspiring. It really is sad that Richt does not demand the same excellence from the entire team that Grantham demands from his D.

and you know Mark is OK with mediocrity based on what? Look, I’m not saying there aren’t things the team and head coach do at times that make me wanna rip my hair out but give credit where credit is due. other than win a National title which is a realistic possibility for the guy, he’s had hands down the most successful tenure of any Georgia coach. He hired Grantham who’s been great and it looks like he’s had a renewed sense of urgency after his hot seat experience. Give they guy a chance. Besides what happened to your post Auburn game mea culpa?

We have seen two sides of Mark Richt, the 2001-2005 version and the current version. He is still learning on the job after 11 seasons. We all continue to grow in our professional lives, but it is past time for him to have stepped up. For me, 6 seasons of average at best football is enough. And I consider dropping 4 games a year average, and that is what Richt has delivered.

Richt has had 5 seasons of 4 or more losses. Incidentally, Saban has had 7 seasons of 4 or more losses.

3 national titles will buy anyone a little grace. Richt has yet to sniff a national title. Over the last 6 years Richt has lost on average 4 games a year. Again, that is average at best.

Seriously. I like the guy and do think our D has tremendous potential, but we have not proven much.
I like the improvement on our D on a number of fronts last year, but given we werent exactly shutting down joe montana and the 49ers given our schedule (sorry but its true), the jury is still out on exactly how good our defense was.
We certainly let the teams that beat us move the ball but admittedly much of that was self inflicted wounds on offense or ST. But a “great” defense only does so much good without the other pieces of the puzzle.
Lets not annoint TG as the next erk until we actually win something of significance on his watch and on the back of his defense

Yep.. really let LSU move the ball.. for ZERO first downs in the first half.. thats what happens when you’ve got not depth, something he has this year..

Like i said, when we can say we did well without some sort of excuse, we can talk about being great. Last time i checked, all 4 quarters count. I hope you are right we have the depth given the self imposed sanctions we have inflicted on ourselves between suspensions and fewer signed players.

Yep…GT was a “great” team last year. They started 6-0. Since only the first half counts, we can disregard the fact they went 2-5 the rest of the way…

Also, against LSU time of possession was something like 36-24 in our favor, so i am not so sure about the depth argument. I know their were some self inflicted wounds that led to quick scores for them, but we didnt exactly “hunker down” on defense when we had a short field at our back
