Okay, it’s time for our weekly look at how Georgia is shaping up with certain statistical measures that have in common one thing – they were all met or exceeded in every year the Dawgs have won the SEC East under Richt. Here’s how things look after Vanderbilt (all stats via cfbstats.com):
- Hold opponents under 18 points per game. As a team, Georgia is yielding 16.5 ppg.
- Finish at least +8 in turnover margin. Georgia’s turnover margin is 0.
- Average better than 380 yards per game on offense. Georgia’s offense is averaging 530 ypg.
- Finish in the top five in total defensive yardage. Georgia’s defense ranks eighth in total defense.
- Finish in the top three in first downs. Georgia is fourth in first downs.
- Finish no worse than third in passing yardage. Georgia is third in passing yardage.
- Finish no worse than third in sacks. Georgia is eighth in sacks.
Last week, the Dawgs only met two of the metrics. This week, it’s three, but there’s positive momentum in several other statistical categories. It will be interesting to watch how much impact the returns of Ogletree and Rambo have on some of those numbers over the next few weeks.
I can’t believe how much I anticipate the stat watch. The YPG on offense is outta site!

I think the crazy thing.. is the TO margin.. two years ago it was amazing how bad we were at it.. last year a regression to the mean. This year we haven’t seen it either way. Does that mean we’re due in the next few games to start getting some TOs? Only having two INT (takeaways not TO) at this point is almost amazing.

The main thing is the defense hasn’t gotten as many, which I think has a little to do with Rambo being out and our run defense not stuffing people yet. It would be interested to know how many fumbles Ogletree caused last season.

I’ve got a feeling offensive yardage is going to cancel out a drop in turnovers. Combine that with a lower defensive ppg and turnovers aren’t really necessary.

We would have more first downs if we didn’t lead college football in plays of 20+ yards. I blame Bobo.

While we are talking interesting stats here is one. There have been 4 quarterbacks to beat UT 3 or more times. The Danny Wueffel did it 4 times. Georgia’s own David Greene did it 3 times. Saturday, Murray can add his name to the list with a third victory against the Vols. There are just all kind of records for this young man to break! DGD!

Georgia also has some “tackles of the quarterback for a loss (of mental and physical health)” that are not counted as sacks because the QB was deemed to be running (for his life) on the play.

I think Rambo and Tree will contribute to the TO margin considerably.

Look at Aub 2010, UGA 2012.
Similarity is amazing.

UGA 2012 is outscoring, and beating off total yards of Aub 2010.
UGA 2012 defense so far is average, but lights out in second half and 4th qaurter, like Aub 2010.
Auburn 2010 had Fairley, UGA has Jones.
Auburn 2010 had Newton, UGA has Gurley.
The Aub 2010 formula was:
Lead SEC in offense in scoring, total yards, rushing, and pass effic.
Defensively, own the 2nd half, especially the 4th quarter.
Have a playmaker on offense and defense who is unstoppable.

Good God, you are comparing Gurley to Cam Newton….Cojo have you been passing that shit around again…
“Have a playmaker on offense and defense who is unstoppable.”
Man, you must have mixed yer videos wrong….Gurley has played four games, reasonably well….get a freaking grip.

“Auburn 2010 had Fairley, UGA has Jones” Jones is a respectful and intelligent leader. Fairley, not so much.

Did the fumble by Rodgers into the endzone count as a turnover?

It does. It’s just not credited to any particular player as a takeaway for individual stats.

The AP voters saying UGA doesn’t look like a Championship team, need to take a look at the 2010 Auburn team.
UGA looks VERY MUCH like a National Championship team, without changing ANYTHING.
the AP voters are trying to compare UGA to Alabama, and say the UGA defense isn’t good enough.
What if they compare 2012 UGA to 2010 Auburn?

I don’t think I would count those INTs by Backup QBs thrown in trash time.

UGA this season may actually be better than AU of 2010 except for their QB rushing ability. UGA certainly has wider margin of point differential in the first 4 games even if AU were against better opponents, just saying.

Whoa, whoa, the difference between Auburn in 2010 and UGA in 2012 is that Auburn won every game. We have won 4, including 2 against cupcakes and have many to play. One bad game or bad break in a close game and we have a problem on our hands. I am as optimistic about this season as any in recent memory, but I would reign in the NC talk until maybe november.

I am not too concerned about being 8th in defense right now either. Most of the teams ahead of us have played 2-3 tomato cans and maybe one conference game. Granted we have played two tomato cans as well but I think that Grantham with his NFL background treated them like preseason games to get our young kids some experience and evaluate talent for future games. I don’t think that there was any desire to shut out Buffalo or FAU which had we had our full compliment of defensive players we could have done.
Ogletree and Rambo will also contribute to more turnovers and less PPG going forward. I don’t think that Grantham has blitzed as much as he would have in the past with those guys out. Think about it, would you really want Connor Norman one on one with a slot receiver? Me either…

Your handle reminds me of a cocktail party we had in our Ca company. One of the PhD scientists introduced her husband to a group of us and when we asked what he did, he replied, “I’m a Rocket Scientist.”. After the obligatory small laughs, turns out he indeed was a PhD who worked for nearby Rocketdyne.
Could you be in that industry as well?

Sounds like a fairly arrogant response. I’ve been in this industry for over 25 years and I’ve never heard anyone answer like that. I know of an astronaut who, when asked what he did for a living, answered that he worked for the government. BTW, I’m educated well beyond my intelligence.
