Chantastic news!

I had to check the calendar to make sure it wasn’t April 1st.

You may remember Roof from such hits as Georgia 45, Auburn 7.

Mark Bradley’s column ought to be a hoot.

    Wait, what?

Damnit, Tech. This confirms that you’re not even trying.

  2. Debby Balcer

It is great news for the DAWGS!!!

  3. I think I just pooped on myself from laughing.

  4. Dawg93

And here I thought Christmas was 2 weeks ago.

  5. Chi-town Dawg

This may even make the TN defensive staff hirings look good – LOL!

  6. ……just like the Jelly of The Month Club:

“Clark, it’s the gift that keeps on giving”

  7. The984

At this point, I think Johnson just wants out of Tech but doesn’t want to quit. So he’s trying to do everything he can to get fired. It’s a genius plan, after all.

    • Mayor of Dawgtown

If he quits he has to pay them. If he’s fired they have to pay him. It’s starting to all make sense now.

      • Will (the other one)

So at some point in the next 10 months he’s going to wipe wing sauce on a Joe Hamilton jersey, then drive around the parking lot of the school president’s office with the 2012 ACC Coastal Co-Champs cardboard sign telling them how he doesn’t care about their macho head games?

  8. UGA76

Fixing to leave work and just got the email to the new post while sitting in my truck in the parking lot. I started cracking up laughing. Hahahaha tooooo funny. Think I’ll stop and get some beer for the big Georgia vs Florida BB game tonight at 7. It’s on CSS. Go Dawgs!

    • The Lone Stranger

How did that beer sit in the belly after that hardwood debacle, eh?

      • UGA76

I’m pissed off. I seriously don’t think Mark Fox can get it done in the SEC. We need to find a new coach. Damn I’m tired of our BB program being losers. I felt like throwing up the beer

      • UGA76

And if u want to know the truth I’ve forked out big money for our BB program over about 15 years. I’m sick of it. And Fox better get his shit together. I’m tired of losing

      • I took my daughter. It was laughable. The only fun part for us was my daughter war her UGA vs FL tshirt for this year. 17-9 HAHA

  9. Ben

    That’s just awesome.

  10. Athens dog.

Saw the news on AJC and had to immediatly see your reaction. Too damn funny.

I’m sure they will also go back to. Four tickets, four hotdogs, four cokes. Hahahahah

  11. Russ

StinGTalk is a hoot right now!

  12. SouthGaDawg

Roof also looks like a doofus with those reading glasses and his playcard in hand. Where are the days of good ole Joe Lee Dunn reeking of alcohol patrolling the sidelines with just his thoughts and no stupid play card. Man those were the times…

  13. toggle

Someone help me out here … I’m not conversant in nerd. Why are the choices on the “private pole (sic)” regarding the Roof hire on Stingtalk “Yes!!” and “Umlaut!”?

  14. Hogbody Spradlin

    Hee, Hee, Hee, Haw, Haw.

    • What fresh hell is this?

Hey……let’s be serious for a moment. This means I still have a shot at becoming an FBS DC.

  15. JasonC

If for some reason Roof doesn’t work out, Sunseri will probably be available.

  16. cube

The Roof, the Roof, the Roof is on fire!

We don’t need no water…let the m’fer burn!

  17. Carolinadawg

And, on the other side of the spectrum, Geathers is leaving.

    • gastr1

Can’t say I’m surprised at all at that.

      • Bevo

Me neither. We got four years of Kwame and he made meaningful contributions. I can’t blame him for leaving now, but it would’ve been nice to have him back. Good luck to the big fella.

  18. Look at what Roof did with those athletes over at Auburn. Just THINK about what he can do with Tech talent!

    • Will (the other one)

Exactly. Plus, based on Groh’s comments (and Fish Fry’s as well), the 3-4 was just too durn complicated for all those geniuses off North Ave. to understand.
So Roof gets players with the football IQ of Aubbies, and the natural talent of…NATS.
It’s been over 10 years since we laid 50+ on them. Here’s hoping that’s rectified this November.

  19. BMan

Did PJ mean to say “one of the most highly respected coaches in Yellow Jacket nation” or did the reporter just omit that?

Yellow Jacket nation = four block area south of 10th Street, between I-75 and Northside Drive.

  20. 202dawg

    But it’s not my birthday…

It IS! It IS my birthday!!

  21. Normaltown Mike

If they name Mac McWhorter as the O-Line coach we’ll know something is up over there.

  22. Dawgbro42

Is there room in the Reggie Ball Wing of the Dawg Hall of Fame for a new Roof?

  23. NewnanDawg

The best part though is the AJC article that mentions the 2010 Auburn defense, but conveniently leaves out the 2011 stats. Wait, no, the best part is all the Techies commenting on what a great hire this is. Wait, no, crap I can’t stop laughing long enough to decide the best part…

    • Biggus Rickus

Ah yes, the 2010 Auburn defense. National ranks:

      PPG: 53rd
      Run: 9th
      Pass: 108th
      Total Defense: 60th

Truly, the gold standard of defense. The amazing thing is that his defenses were considerably worse the other two years.

      • Hinton does a review of this each year after the season. That 2010 Auburn defense was unequivocally the worst defense (by no close measure) to win a title during the BCS era. $200k really went a long way on the Plains that year.

  24. Well hell, I personally think Roof is a pretty good coach. I mean Van Gorder couldn’t do anymore (even worse) at Auburn. Then before that Roof was at Duke. I mean, come on – so he returns to Moma on the flats. Ok – who remembers the “Black Watch” and DJS running for his life.?

All that said – Ted Roof and Andy McCollum are good coaches – the problem is that the recruiting has fallen so low – just don’t know if it can be turned around. Then again – old Fish Fry Genuis may just want to get a couple year bump and ride out the string. After all – he just pasted a heartless USCw and the lame kittens in a bowl.

    • piper

4 times under coach richt, we have faced ted roof coordinated defenses.
      2001 31pts
      2009 31pts
      2010 31pts
      2011 45pts

      avg 34.5pts/game

as off coordinator at fsu, coach richt played tech in 99 and 2000 also.

      1999 41pts
      2000 26pts

      avg 33.5pts/game

      • Doug

Don’t forget Roof was the D-coordinator at Tech in ’99 as well, when we dropped a 48-spot on them (that should’ve been a 51- or even a 55-).

  25. Bulldog Joe

Unless Ted can convince his head coach to hire a decent offensive guy to develop a unit capable of simulating a full speed passing game, their defense will continue to under perform.

  26. Roof’s defense actually performed fairly decently in the Big 10 this year. Fourth in yards allowed and second in scoring. I’m not sure how that will translate when he steps up in leagues to the ACC, though.

    • D.N. Nation

And Nebraska’s defense parlayed playing Big 10 “offenses” into leading the nation in passing D. How’d that work out?

    • Russ

Penn State had a good defense last year so the best that can be said is he didn’t screw it up. Of course, given the dumpster fire that Penn State was coming to this season, I guess that IS a decent job.

  27. Get Reggie Ball as offensive coordinator and Tech will never win again. Coach Johnson is the gift that just keeps on giving.

  28. Mayor of Dawgtown

I don’t get it. The interim DC at Tech, Charles Kelly, did a demonstrably better job than Groh. Why hire Roof? I understand Kelly is leaving Tech and going to FSU–as what? DC? A position coach? Was Kelly runnoft? Roof is a proven loser and Kelly had Tech’s D playing pretty well against the Lamer. Looks like a rudderless ship on the flats.
