I found this story on Nick Marshall interesting, not so much because of his return to the SEC, this time as a quarterback at Auburn, but because of how he was treated by Georgia’s staff on the way out the door. Check out what his JUCO coach had to say about that:
“What the Georgia coaches told me was he was a kid in the wrong place at the wrong time, and they had to do something, but they didn’t want him to have a bad name,” Tatum said. “That’s one of the reasons Coach Ledford brought him to me, a chance to clear his name without somebody always bringing it up.”

I don’t get it. If he was just in the wrong place at the wrong time then why did we have to kick him off the team? Why not just suspend him and make him run stairs or something. What am I missing?

Reading between the lines his crime was likely letting it happen/not reporting it. Kind of like a honor code violation. So what they are saying is that had it not been for seay no theft happens, but Nick was still responsible.
Wish he wasn’t at Auburn as he may end being really good, but this may be the best thing that could have happened to him. He was no DB. I hadn’t seen someone avoid contact like that since the “hit man” was around.

Maybe you’re right, but why not just come out and say that and let him stay on the team. Either he’s a good kid and a good teammate or he’s not. Maybe I’m being too hard on an 18-19 year old kid but there’s not much gray area when it comes to stealing something. I’m glad things are working out for him but if he really didn’t play a significant part in it then why did we lose him to Auburn?

I think you’re missing something. It’s not about trying to fix him if he’s willing and able. Sometimes its just better for a fresh start. It’s certainly possible that this guy can be rehabilitated, but just look at Crowell, who got a lot of chances until his offense became big enough that he had to go. That has nothing to do with how good or bad of a kid he was.
Also, It’s not really Richt’s style to throw stones after he’s doled out punishment. What’s done was done, and it was deemed severe enough to kick him off the team. But it’s also doesn’t mean that the kid is a lost cause, and if Richt thinks a fresh start will help him, he’s just saying that he has to do it elsewhere. He has to be very careful when deciding to keep a kid and the message that sends to other kids on the team.

Cam Newton, Part II? But this time from Georgia. Both guys were caught stealing? Both guys are mobile QBs with strong arms.
Ir remains to be seen if this guy is as talented as Cam. Not surprised he ended up at Auburn.

As much as I hate the guy, I don’t think I’ve seen a QB as talented as Newton in a long, long time. I doubt Marshall will be anything close.
Still though, how can Auburn fans not be at least a little embarrassed about shamelessly picking up kids who got kicked out of other programs.

I don’t doubt that he can be very good, but Cam Newton single-handedly took an otherwise 8-9 win auburn team to an undefeated 14-0 season and a national championship. No other QB I’ve seen in my short 25 years, not even Tebow, was as big of a game changer as Newton was on such a consistent basis.

I agree that Cam was excellent. What I was most happy about was that Irwin Meyers didn’t get to have Cam as a successor to Tim. Had that happened, maybe Nick would not have been able to drive Irwin out of the league

So? What does it mean for Georgia? Tells me someone made a poor decision with regard to the roster. Risk. Risk can be good. But what was the rate of return on Marshall. Georgia helped him. But what did he do in return? What do the other high school coaches think of Georgia? Should not always expect something back. But Georgia has to fight tooth and nail for recruits in this state. Loyalty? Tell me a few stories.

This is one reason why Mark Richt will always be, in my mind at least, the best coach in college football. Hey, I’m a fan and I sometimes let my emotions get the best of me. I yell and scream and say stupid stuff that I regret. But at the end of the day there is no doubt Richt is at the pinnacle of his profession. Mark is a good man whose heart is in the right place. At the college level, where you’re dealing with young men who are still working their way through learning about life, you can’t do better than CMR.

Sometimes it’s not just about the rules, it’s about the effect on the other players if you let something slide. I trust the coaches that they did the right thing for the program and for the kid. Can’t imagine things being handled this way too many other places.

Barring injuries, two of the teams we’ll play next season will have former UGA players as their QB. Seems like there’s a pretty big dissonance between UGA discipline policies and our sec brethren. You’d think a conference would have similar rules for all the schools in the jurisdiction. There should be some type of even-handed approach – either you’re out of the sec completely, or the school shouldn’t be kicking out players.

And this is why we need to fire Mark Richt immediately! No, no…stay with me here a minute. CMR certainly knows how to find and develop top QB talent (see Green, Stafford, Murray). But his unreasonably strict policies over thug behavior have run-off Mett and Marshall. Other SEC coaches…too lazy to recruit their own talent (see Chizik, Malzahn, Miles)… know that CMR is going to continue to pump great talent into the JC system where they can then pick them up (cheap!) and have ready-to-go seasoned talent. This may even be happening with RB’s (see Crowell, Malcombe, Ealey). So CMR recruits ’em, sends ’em packing for advanced training, and at no cost other SEC coaches grab them and win championships…all at UGA’s expense. ENOUGH!!
Dump Richt, embrace mistakes star players make as “learning experiences” and let’s start winning again. Besides, we have the greatest OC on the planet and a DC itching to get a HC gig…losing CMR would be just a minor blip on the path.
Think I’m not serious? Why do you think they ran Urban off from Florida? Because he was “tired”?! Needed a break?! Oh please…. And who did they go get? One of “their” greatest faux-alums and top DC on the planet.

Sorry Aus, but I don’t know wtf you’re talking about. Never said or implied it was a CMR issue. Its an sec issue. Simply saying that a conference should have equal treatment for all members.
