Paul Johnson had some time on his hands, so he watched the Georgia-South Carolina game. And he’s got some advice for Steve Spurrier.
Gaudin asked about South Carolina coach Steve Spurrier’s fourth-quarter decision to play out of the shotgun on fourth and goal, inches from the Georgia goal line, rather than have quarterback Connor Shaw go under center. On the play, Shaw pitched to running back Mike Davis, who was tackled shy of the goal line by Georgia linebacker Amarlo Herrera, a game-turning play in the fourth-quarter.
Johnson first explained that that’s how South Carolina runs its offense.
“I wouldn’t do that, but Coach Spurrier’s won a lot of games,” he said.
Good of him to notice.

Man…Georgia dodged a bullet there….if Spurrier had known that PJ was watching, he could have called him and asked what play to run…whew!

We’re “interested” in Paul Johnson the way people are interested in Carrot Top. Sure, it’s a guilty pleasure, but everybody needs a point of reference to make us feel better about ourselves.

Also: the only major Div-1 football school to reduce their stadium capacity, and a team full of fans that complain that Tech’s academics are so difficult they’re at a recruiting disadvantage even compared to superior academic institutions such as Stanford, yet their own head coach admitted said genius players couldn’t grasp 3-4 defense concepts.

Spurrier is a better coach than Johnson 1000 times over. I do wish they had some kind of very public disdain for each other.
Also, a guy who runs an option-only offense questioning a much better coach’s decision to run the option. Just… What?

Actually, what Paul Johnson would have done if he coached Georgia was to let South Carolina score on purpose so that his team would have the ball and they could win it at the end.

I’m sure Johnson was more distressed with SOS on the very next play, by not permitting UGA to score from 1st & 10 at our own 1 yard line in order to get the ball back quicker. That’s a genius move there…just ask Mark Bradley.

Both had previously been committed to Tech but when he heard they were taking a visit to Spurrier, Paul threw them back in the fryer
