You may not have heard, but the crown jewel of Paula Deen’s brother’s empire, Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House, abruptly announced its end last week. Aside from unexpectedly throwing Uncle Bubba’s workforce onto the unemployment line, the closure has led to putting another person in a tough spot. She deserves better, too.
Colleen Sheffield booked her reception at Uncle Bubba’s for her October wedding. Now she’s scrambling to find a new venue.
“I’ve called 80 people, and I can’t find a venue anywhere because October is a prime wedding month,” said Sheffield.
And it’s not just the month that is the problem.
“I picked a bye week for Georgia [football],” she said. “Like any Savannah Southern girl, you plan it around SEC football.”
Amen to that, sister. Hope things work out.

We married in January (I recall telling him, “Anytime after the first weekend in December. No. I’m not kidding.”), but I wish we’d just eloped, and saved the money.

My sister in law got married concurrent with the 2004 Georgia – Auburn game, which in retrospect ended up being an act of mercy.

I used to live down the road from this restaurant; it’s a shame it’s closing. The food wasn’t great, but the location is and the atmosphere was pretty cool.

I don’t blame her. Bubba’s Diamond had been hemorrhaging for a while. Owing Paula Dean Enterprises 300,000 plus. I’m sure since the whole lawsuit that cost Paula her cooking show started there she had lost all fondness for the place. She plans on a new diamond restaurant in the mountains of Tennessee. Near Dollywood I think. Those oysters won’t come from the ocean though.

My wife’s best friend from med school has a daughter that got married a couple of months ago. Wedding and reception cost a cool $40,000. Dream wedding. Some of the members of the wedding band were the old Stillwater crowd. Remember Mindbender ? “Momma was a Gibson, Daddy was a Fender…”
The couple moved into their lease/purchase $200,000 home after the wedding. I’m with the Mayor. Put the money into the house. At the end of the day they own a house with a 165,000 mortgage for less than a grand a month. Good start. And a better investment than the coffee table book of the wedding. imho.

Do what makes you happy.When I got married everybody was driving me crazy telling me I had to do this, had to do that. We ended up eloping and getting married at sunset on the beach. But I was afraid to tell my mother for weeks LOL.

That’s great and all…but what about the other games that day? I’m a junkie…I don’t want to miss the LSU/awbarn game, who does?
And a buddy of mine did the same thing, if they’re fans themselves, do they think the Dawgs will have the same bye week yr after yr? Hence, anniversary interrupted. Oh well, maybe not everyone is as sick as me..lots of months on the calendar tho…lots…

that and you piss off family/friends who support other schools. Mama’s family is a lot of FSU with a little Florida, Dad’s is all Nebraska, friends who are Gamecocks, Vols, Bammers, among others. If I did my wedding on a bye week, I’m just screwing all of them who have a game. Not cool.
Wedding season ends in mid August, begins in January.

Hate it for her because at least she put some considerate thought into the date, although every Saturday in the fall is special. Agree with others though, weddings are such an overly dramatic event that wastes a lot of money better used in a more practical way and inconveniences many of those you care about.
My daughter is a big CFB fan so at least she chose a summer date a few weeks from now. Have to admit I am still surprised she didn’t take the envelope of cash/trip and have an informal party for friends on their return though. At least she picked a destination wedding spot in the mountains with no ties though. Comfortable, relaxing venue for everyone to be together, something of a moral victory of sorts, I guess.

From Savannah, October is good, as is November, but it is still football season. Of course here is nothing wrong with Fridays or Sundays. May is pretty solid month for weather too.

As a fellow Savannahian Colleen, let me handle this one for ya.
Cube, no one south of the Fall Line gets married in April or May because of the horrendous gnat/no seeum infestation. Just miserable. October is better because there is usually a chill in the night air that seems to keep them away.

And the weather in April is a tad cooler than October – without the 5 months of gnat buildup that October has. April would be a better choice than October…or June.
