We’re all fired up about it, obviously.
It’s part of the reason Marc Weiszer gives Georgia an edge in intangibles tomorrow.
But then I think about this obvious comparison.
“I guess the best way I can answer that is how do people feel about A.J. Green around here,” Georgia coach Mark Richt said this week.
Green, like Gurley, was suspended four games in 2010 when he took $1,000 for a signed Independence Bowl jersey from a person the NCAA deemed an agent.
Since you brought it up, Coach, I can’t help but point out that Green’s return, while triumphant from a personal point of view, as it included one of the most remarkable catches of his career,
… didn’t turn out so well for the team, as Georgia lost to a mediocre Colorado team on the road.
I’m not saying that Weiszer’s wrong about the intangibles, as there are differences in the two situations – the biggest being that Gurley returns in a night home game against a big rival – but it’s worth keeping in mind that it’s not necessarily a slam dunk, either.
I guess you could say I still have a healthy respect for Gus’ rabbit’s foot.
Todd comes back as he started – just another member of the team. His playing position can be covered by several individuals and that’s why we keep mentioning their names.
We just hope he comes back and performs as we imagine, which is unfair to Todd and this team.

Here’s to watching closely and cheering like hell for the big uglies. Hope they play with a road grader attitude and Andrews gets to foot race with Chubb again.

I worry about a Ewing theory with this. Not so much that tg2 isn’t able to add significantly to the team, but that bobo and crew may rely on him more than they should.
That said, I worry about everything when it comes to uga football.

Let’s hope that the three-legged rabbit still has a chuckle or two left for Augustus.

Todd’s different. Best RB in conference since Bo. It’s gonna be a fun night.

He’s better than Bo, IMHO. Best since Herschel.

biggest difference is AJ had not played in a game for 9 months and ended up missing half the game with cramps. Gurley is already game tested and should be able to jump right back in.

Plus TG’s replacements are pretty damn good. There was no replacement for AJ.

Incredible catch by A.J. That was right in front of me. I was sitting in that end zone corner about 3 rows up and remember being in awe watching that athletic ability.

What a miserable night in Boulder.

I was on the other side of that end zone as you, S222V, where we could see Knowshon run into the locker room with AJ for his cramps. Mind-blowing catch… then… just terrible. Otherwise, it was a great trip though. The likes of which we shall not soon see again, I guess.

Agree, more to trips like this than just a game. Not sure why folks go if that is the only reason.

Same here. Best place I’ve ever watched a football game.

Knowshon wasn’t on that team.

He was at the game.

He was a second year player in Denver that season.

His lead blocker was a fullback called Timbrow or something…

I just hope we don’t go into this with the attitude that all we have to do is hand Gurley the rock and the game is ours. The last thing I want to hear on Sunday is our players talking about how they weren’t properly motivated or how they underestimated Auburn. Whatever we got, we need to leave it on the field. Like Spence, I worry about everything.

Unfortunately, these hyped returns for mega players usually end with an injury or a key turnover. Dawgs get rolled at home.

Really? I challenge you to list 10 games to support that “assessment.”

Guess I only needed one to support that “assessment,” Professor.

AU hasn’t rolled UGA much in Richt’s tenure, unless my memory is failing.

Correct. Richt has done the rolling when it’s been done.

The Fairley / Scam year (2010?) and 2004 are about the closest they’ve come.

The only year they dominated us was 2004, and that was the best team Auburn has ever had, best in the country, imo.

I hope we don’t even have to attempt a pass in this game…just run gurłey and Chubb for 500 yards….that would be a dream come true

I have a feeling that motivation is not an issue this week.

This game is won or lost on defense

Probably right, but it might be one of those things where we just need to stop them one more time than they stop us, and they might not stop us at all.

I think Gurley’s return is more psychological than actual performance. If you look at Chubb’s numbers they’re incredible and I’m not sure Todd would have done any better in those four games.
This game is going to come down to which defense can make the last stop or cause the most turnovers.

I was on the opposite end zone opposite side when he made that catch. All I could see was him leap up and snare that in…I’d never seen anything like that at a game. Folsom Field is a great place to watch a game if you’ve never been. Would have very much liked a different result, however.

It’s beginning to be that time, fans. Lace up your Bulldawg shoes that carry the Mercury wings on the back; tip your hat toward the lovely Athena; call upon Mars of the East to defeat the Venus of the West….no vaseline (we went through the Ky jelly last week).
My memory goes back to Uga II’s introduction upon the death of Uga I. This pup came charging through the goalpost barriers put up at halftime, extending hard against his 15′ leash, his little legs left no room for doubt that he was the top of his breed while running and pulling the cheerleader on the other end all the way to the center of the field where he unambiguously exulted in the biggest roar I can remember in Sanford Stadium. We stood and cheered the entire 3rd qtr with no letup while dismantling an Auburn team that had been leading at halftime.
If any of you research and find differently about which team or the score, leave me to that imperfect memory cell and be kind to my final memories that haven’t yet completely gone the way of the flutterbys.

My biggest concern about Todd Gurley is that he comes back not in “game shape.” He hasn’t played in a real football game in more than a month. Practicing with the team ain’t the same thing as playing. When AJ Green came back against Colorado he was so out of shape that when we really needed him, in the 4th quarter, he was gassed and on the sideline.

Todd can take breaks and we can feel satisfied that the same yds are gained in his absence. You know that, Mayor.

We have Chubb if Gurley needs breaks if he does.

Todd in poor game shape is still probably better than 90% of the RBs in the country.

As he demonstrated last year, when he was both injured and out of shape.

I don’t think Gurley will have any trouble adjusting. He’s not playing a game at 5,000 feet above sea level as Green did. He’s right back where he belongs. He’ll still be the best player in the nation.
I think we run Auburn out, 48-30. Auburn has been spectacularly fortunate lately, but that all changed last weekend. Now they’re just Auburn again. Not lucky Auburn or charmed Auburn. Just Auburn. And deep down they all know it. I expect them to be a 4-loss team at the end of the regular season.
Our defense will play well and our QB will spread it around effectively. We will win the field position battle, as has been our custom, and Auburn will be finished by the middle of Q3. And some good news will be forthcoming from College Station before we’re through. Who are the lucky ones now?
Pummel ’em, Dawgs!

Has anyone staked out the proctologist offices in the greater Opelika/Auburn area to see if Gus showed up to a “reinsertion” appointment?
LikeLike
Too late, Rocket. How much sympathy does Gus deserve? Even his procto docs will be overcharging him when he goes 8-4. Remember, the docs went to med school at U. Ala at B’ham. He may end up with the insertion of a . . . well, you GTP. He’ll need to go back to Arkansas to get it removed. And if they’re not happy with him there, there’s always the OC position at Louisville.
