I am just sick about this. There were many back-and-forth comment threads on earlier blog posts regarding whether Gurley should come back at all. For those that said it would be selfish for him not to return please step up big now and raise the money for the millions of dollars this will cost him in lifetime earnings. Or are you too selfish to do that?

This is a very difficult injury for a RB to recover from. Guys have done it but there is no way to know how his body will respond. If you were crunching the numbers for RBs who returned as good as before an ACL tear to those who were never the same, the never the same group would win in a landslide.
Love Gurley. He is a Dawg for the Ages. Hope he bounces back like AP.

Yes. He’s not coming back, and if he were for any reason at all, I would refuse to see that as a bright side. We have to put the students ahead of the G in cases like this. He has paid his dues and his star needs to shine on the biggest stage. Anything less means something unpleasant has impacted the situation.

Dawgs could certainly use him with the impending ’15 QB scenario. Then again, many feared the same before this year and the results have panned out OK.

Any time a player has knee pain, they’re going to do the “ACL” test. I saw some play in the knee that was very concerning, but not enough to be definitive that the ACL is ruptured in my non-medical opinion (I had an ACL blown with a lot more instability..all I can compare it to). I’m holding out hope for an MCL/PCL.

Senator, if it is ok with you, I will wait till I hear something official from UGA to go into full depression. That said, since there are only three weeks left in the regular season, I guess even a sprain might be “season-ending”
I have read that Georgia paid for an insurance policy that pays quite a bit of change for an injury that lowers Gurley’s draft stock. Paid for with NCAA funds, by the way.
No matter the outcome, the look on Gurley’s dad’s face took some of the joy out of beating Auburn.
Hope the AJC is FOS.

How much does his stock have to fall for the insurance to kick in? I am thinking falling from the first round would cost him significantly more than 2.5M. I hate it for the kid. Grabbing it before he hit the ground was awful to watch.
LikeLike
There is an article on ESPN indicating that he’ll get 2.5 million if he falls out of the first round. He may not get a cent if somebody picks him late in the first. But there is a gap between what a top first round pick makes and a bottom first. Also, it may shorten his career and make him more susceptible to a future injury. Insurance or not, I believe last night’s injury cost him more money than some will ever see.

My guess, based on the broadcast optics, is that it’s a sprain/partial tear, maybe something along the lines of what Shockley suffered. Still, with only 2 weeks left, plus the SECCG, he might not be able to make it back. He’s earned his place in the UGA pantheon, regardless. DGD.

Season-ending is a 3 week injury.
I figured partial tear or sprain due to the fact that he walked on it. Either of those has a recovery time longer than 3 weeks.

Often you can walk just fine on an acl tear…you just don’t have much stability. Heck, a friend of mine skied several days on an acl tear last winter after tearing it from simply falling over from a standing position.

I can’t believe the doc and trainers would let him just walk around if they as much as suspected a serious tear…that can damage it further.

I hesitate to bring this up, but I heard them mention on the broadcast last night that TG3 worked mainly with Coach Tereshinski to stay in condition while he was suspended. Last year there was speculation that JoeTII’s training methods could have contributed to the rash of knee injuries. That said, knee injuries, particularly ACLs, are part of football. May be worth looking into though. Good luck at the next level Todd.

It’s a damn shame that he’s been on the sideline almost as much as he’s been on the field because he’s shown himself to be one of the greatest UGA players ever in the short time we have been able to watch him.
There are two (maybe three, if Marshall can ever get healthy) great RBs backing up Gurley, so I’m not worried about the team. I just want to see this young man succeed (and profit) wherever he winds up after he leaves Athens.

As Georgia running back Todd Gurley was serving a four-game suspension for accepting money for autographs, the University of Georgia spent more money on him to support him when he did get back on the field.
Sources told ESPN.com that, within the last two weeks, Georgia upped Gurley’s insurance policy to $10 million in coverage — $5 million for total disability if Gurley got injured and never played again and $5 million in loss of value insurance, which would kick in if Gurley injured himself and slipped in the draft.
Gurley, who tore his ACL against Auburn in his first game back, previously had $5 million in total disability and $2.5 million in loss of value insurance. The policy was written by International Specialty Insurance.
In his latest draft big board, published Nov. 12, ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. listed Gurley as his No. 8 overall pick.
Sources say that Gurley would start to collect on his loss of value insurance if he slipped out of the first round. He would collect the full $5 million if he somehow went undrafted. He also could collect $5 million if the injury prevented him from ever playing again.
Sources say Georgia paid in between $50,000 and $60,000 for the policy. Over the last two years, the NCAA has allowed schools to pay such policies, most of which have been paid for through the Student Assistance Fund. The fund allows schools to pay for certain items for athletes in need, including insurance.
The date for Gurley’s surgery to repair his ACL has not yet been determined.

““No pain, no gain,” Gurley tweeted Sunday afternoon. ”
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated, don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream—and not make dreams your master;
If you can think—and not make thoughts your aim;
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!
A man, indeed….thanks for all you gave to us, TG3.
