The spirit of Jim Boeheim lives on in college football.

To what should be to no one’s surprises, plenty of college football coaches think that a four-team playoff isn’t big enough.  As soon as the playoffs expand to eight, they’ll be lobbying hard for sixteen (20% are already there, but it’s early).

Can you say job security?  I thought you could.

Swofford gets it, good for him. I interpreted the 20% wanting a 16 team playoff to be of all coaches, not just the Power 5. You can see why the smaller schools would want a 16 team playoff and that is why the Divisions should be split, their interests are not aligned on playoffs any more than on finances. 16 teams is an unworkable number without disrupting the D1 game, and schedule, as we know it. You gain nothing by going beyond eight, imo.

6 is probably the best and it’s workable workable. 8 is better than four. More than 8 is worse than the BCS. I hope it never goes beyond 8. I would like to see a playoff between the 5 conference champs. Allowing a wild card would allow for teams like Norte Dame to get in, or from a smaller conference, or for a 2nd team from a major conference.

Agree, nothing over eight, never, and the BCS was crap. I have no issue with six as being fair for getting enough qualified teams in but feel the two byes that would be required tilts the field too much. You would have many of the same arguments about fairness and subjectivity, it is a huge advantage and, like now, there is no way to settle it to people’s satisfaction. The additional two teams of going to eight doesn’t do anything but help and doesn’t dilute the quality of the field in any meaningful way.

8 is obscene. And the main reason is that 8 will never be enough for playoff addicts. Four is fine…maybe six with that damn bye for top two. The number of years in which 8 teams deserved a shot at a mythical national title can be counted on one hand…if that.

      • 5 power conference champs and 3 at large is not obscene by any stretch of the imagination.

It means at least 1 or 2 small conference teams will get a chance to prove (or disprove) they are legit, all conference champs get their shot (which maintains the legitimacy of the conferences themselves), and then 1 or 2 non conference champs that are legit contenders.

Your “main reason” is so far off base it is hard to discuss it. I know zero people who want more than eight, nada. Yes, I know there are some who would vote for 64 but the are the lunatic fringe and have no meaningful say. If that is your “main reason” join the party for striving for eight and you will have the season and playoff enhanced and a large block standing with you against future expansion.
