For sure, Georgia’s gonna get his best shot.

Is it safe to presume that thought was on the mind of every Dawg fan who watched South Carolina’s play last night?

Between the Coxian brain farts from North Carolina’s Marquise “I knew better than to do that” Williams, who managed two end zone interceptions, and Larry Fedora’s Mike Bobo impersonation by choosing to throw the ball on his team’s last scoring drive instead of using a running back who was blowing up the Gamecock defense (“I have to go back and look at the calls of what we were doing down there” – gee, you think?), North Carolina was just generous enough to let Spurrier’s team escape with a win.

“We’re not strutting out of here like we’re hot stuff, that’s for sure,” Spurrier said.

If we’re not unbeaten when the Tide comes to town something has gone horribly wrong.

Did UNC look like an offense with 10 returning starters and a senior QB with 3 years experience? No, it did not.

Call it UNC’s retirement gift to the ol’ ball coach.

Wait a minute, Senator. You’re suggesting that Spurrier always gives the Dawgs his best shot? I’ve never heard such a thing.

We always get Spurrier’s best shot, but after watching that game I don’t think he has many bullets. Fedora lost that game.

True, but I did not see the playmakers he has had in recent years. Cooper is the man, but who else really stood out on offense? I don’t see them beating UGA. If they do though, I am sure the fellas on here will have some excuse. I think the only one left to use has to do with a dead chicken and a voodoo priest.

Not so fast… I grew up in Columbia…The chicken and they voodoo priest were used (to exorcise the “chicken curse”) prior to the Clemson game one year. They proceeded to get waxed anyway. Agree about Cooper but they’re gonna get him killed out there.

Seriously just inexplicable play calling at the end. As you said, their RB was blowing USC up, and you have him on the sidelines while you put the game in the hands of your QB who’s struggled all night and has already thrown two costly interceptions.

Spurrier doesn’t get to decide who wins the Ga/SC game this year…It’s all on the Georgia coaching staff to actually get the Dawgs mentally prepared for what will be a hair-on-fire South Carolina team looking to make their season in one game. I’m very sick and tired of seeing Georgia out-emotioned by teams wanting to “make a statement”.
Georgia has the talent to beat the living shit out of SC and that’s what I want to see happen. No more wetting the bed when SOS walks out onto the field.
I’ve seen this too many times…Georgia doesn’t show up for a quarter or so and has to struggle to stay in a game and hope to pull off a miracle finish.
I want to be up by 30 at the half..but I’ll take 21.

This was my thought last night too. South Carolina looked like garbage but they’re gonna look all world against us. I don’t know if that’s an indictment against us or credit to them but it sure seems to be that way. Every freaking year.

Name one SEC East team that has the talent to play with us this year. USC should be like every other East team we play. A win for us with room to spare.

You guys, and the kharmic bitches, can worry all you want, that team will not beat UGA, or stay close. I just hope Kentucky can manage to lose to them so USC’s record doesn’t end up 3-9 in SOS’s last year. That was a bad football team the Cocks trotted out, sure hope Connor Mitch gets over that hip pointer so he can play QB against us. They had to (over) use the wildcat just to get the ball in Cooper’s hands a few times.

Did you notice the “crowd” in that season opener, less than an hour and a half from Columbia? Big metro area, close to SC campus, not more than 3 hours from UNC, surrounded by lifetime UNC and SC fans, waiting eight months for the return of CFB, and that is all the excitement they can muster? Small wonder they returned half of their allocation to the UGA game. And they signed an agreement to repeat this in 2019 and 2023? They had to see how poor the ticket sales were going. Embarrassing attendance for an SEC team.

Actually, I recall it well. The difference is I have some perspective in how I view UGA football, don’t continually obsess on just the negative, and enjoy it. I also know last year’s game was between two teams who disbanded over the winter. Fret and be miserable if you wish, we are going to whip their ass, and it isn’t too early to begin enjoying it.

So many thoughts but I haven’t quite organized them. We won. It was ugly and I really didn’t expect to win for much of that game. The defense completely shut out a really good offense in the second half. Our offense was not impressive but we put up nearly as many yards and more points than a really good, experienced NC offense.

Our defense and special teams could be really good this season. That was the best special teams performance I have seen maybe ever…kickoffs out of the end zone, punt coverage and kicking, and FG unit. The defense is solid up the middle with plenty of depth. D-line got pressure and forced bad throws. The NC offense has some really good receivers, good running backs and a decent QB who can run. Tough matchup and held them to 13 points.

Everything about the offense is a worry but Connor Shaw and Dylan Thompson both looked horrible in their first career start. I hope our QB and receivers were just cramping and not more hurt than they appeared. You put in your preview that our receivers were a strength of the team but right now I only see about 3 players who can play and all three limped off the field. I think we can run the ball and play defense for most of the year. If the passing game comes around we could be really good.

I don’t disagree with much of what you said. Fairly balanced and objective response. We’ll obviously know more as season wears on but I suspect NC’s O and SC’s D are a little closer to average units rather than what you’ve laid out above…”really good offense”, “really good, experienced NC offense”, “really good receivers” is a bit overstated IMO (at least at this juncture). I realize Fedora and the QB shot themselves in the foot several times but I have a hard time pumping up NC’s O and SC’s D on what most unbiased spectators would describe as an overall derp-fest.

UNC put up a lot of points last year on a lot of teams. I believe they returned 11 starters with a senior QB, I consider that pretty experienced. Howard and Davis are both 6’4″ and I think they are both NFL talent. I think most people were impressed by their running back. It is a talented offense and I expect it to be much better than an average offense.

I will also say both teams shot themselves in the foot and almost every game last night was a derp-fest.

And if my aunt had balls she would be my uncle. That has to be the most equivocal post I have ever read. Here is what I saw:

You are weak up the middle. UNC gashed you repeatedly for huge gains but for whatever reason Fedora went all Lane Kiffin and forgot he had running backs for awhile. The offense is bad. Pharoah Cooper is the only player that you have that can make something happen. The long TD run by the jitterbug guy happened due to over pursuit from the defense and poor gap fills.

If the Chickens stay within 2 TD’s of UGA then something is terribly wrong.

UNC moved the ball at-will, I think their head coach & QB deserve the largest amount of credit for keeping points off the board in the second half.

Sides, I didn’t see any “good” O from NC and if you call that “good” D from SC, it would be nice if you would continue it through our game. Doesn’t mean that I don’t think that Mitch won’t improve before we meet him, but we can shred what you called D last night. There certainly are some big guys on your D, but more often than not, I saw them get whipped by some well-placed blocks that had them staggering off-balance. There always seemed to be creases wherever I looked and that’s all that good runners need.

Last night was a template on how to lose to Spurrier: let him hang around. If you let him set within a TD long enough, he’ll beat you in the end bc his game management (last year excluded) is the best of all time. USC this year to me is going to be a yardstick game for Pruitt. If they get more than 24 points, I’ll seriously lower my expectations for the year.

I agree about the game being a yardstick game for the defense. If we have any trouble at all stopping that offense, we will get killed by some of the other teams we face. The chicken offense is pretty much Cooper, and that’s it.

  17. Miserable opening night of football. There should be a law passed that no team ever plays Alcorn State on the opening day. ever.

Agree about TCU. Cannot just go on one game, especially an opener but that doesn’t look like a team that will make it through the season unbeaten and I thought they might. Baylor and OU are pretty good teams in that conference as well.

NC got caught with 6 in the box vs 2 tight ends and Carson goes 48 untouched. They keep their best back on the bench in the red zone. Game, set, match.

I thought Spurrier called a good game. His QB came out awful and he pulled every running play he had out of the book. The problem for the Cocks is I don’t see how they can evolve unless the QB dramatically improves.

Larry Fedora should forfeit his entire salary for this year.

+1 It’s scary that as ornery as he is, as bad as his O looked preparation wise, as squirrely as Mitch played, the OBC goes to the wildcat, motivates his D, and steals a win. He’s like a zombie you just can’t put down.

And to the “Richt is the only coach to make bonehead calls” crowd, I present…Larry Fedora.

Mr. Obvious here, SC ran the ball, because the new QB was not sharp. We are a team that, based on last year, can’t stop a good running attack (Arkansas excepted). I think SC tests us. To win we must stone there running game Wildcat and all. Man the Ole Ball Sack have to go to his patented rub plays and have our DB’s jump those routes. It won’t be a rout unless the Defense makes it one.
