Observations from the 35, err, err, err! edition

Sandstorm that, ‘Cocks.

Domination is fun.  You pretty much knew the coaches could sense what was happening when the decision was made not to bring in Ramsey for his obligatory second quarter series.  And when the dust settled, you had the kind of ass whipping most Georgia fans have only been able to dream about when it comes to the OBC.

Savor it, Dawgnation.

  • The crowd was great.  Electric atmosphere for the players to draw on… not that they needed much help from us.  And the Keith Marshall love was very nice.
  • Whoever made the decision to dial down the volume on the PA system, bless you.
  • Your team beats a South Carolina team by thirty-two points, there aren’t going to be many brickbats to hand out, but it has to be said that kickoff coverage left something to be desired.  Especially the poor coverage, aided by a dumb penalty, with just seconds left in the first half that allowed Spurrier to steal three points.
  • How about Marshall Morgan showing off his mad tackling skillz?
  • There is something sad about watching Steve Spurrier reduced to calling plays for an option offense to move the ball.
  • And there was something strange about Spurrier not testing the middle of the field against Georgia’s pass defense more than he did, given the success he had with that last year.
  • Best thing about the game Pruitt called against Spurrier was holding Pharoh Cooper to one catch.
  • There may have only been one sack in the game, but you could tell that Georgia’s pass rush was throwing off Orth’s timing as the game wore on.  As well as his composure – the pick he threw was just an awful decision.
  • If you’ve seen any of the LSU-Auburn game and had a chance to compare the way that defensive line played to the way Georgia’s did, going from Garner to Rocker has been a huge trade up.
  • Can you believe how comfortable Jake Ganus looks?  It’s like he was born to play in Pruitt’s scheme.  I really only saw one blown play from him in coverage.
  • In case you hadn’t noticed, that Leonard Floyd fella’s a pretty good player.
  • Malkom Parrish played his ass off.  Again.
  • Every time I watch Quincy Mauger, I can’t help but be impressed with how good a secondary coach Pruitt is.  Mauger is just light years away from the confused to the point of uselessness kid we saw in his freshman year.
  • Okay, one more negative note:  I’m still not thrilled with how this defense handles running quarterbacks.  It won’t be an issue with Alabama in a couple of weeks, but Tennessee has Josh Dobbs.
  • The offensive line gets better week to week.  Pass protection was more than adequate, as Lambert never got touched.  And the run blocking is solid, to say the least.  Chubb wasn’t touched on his last touchdown run, despite everybody in the stadium knowing he was going to get the ball.
  • Speaking of Chubb, how amazing is it that even with him getting his eleventh straight game of rushing for more than 100 yards and going over 2,000 yards for his career, he was probably only the third or fourth biggest story on offense on the night?  Abundance of riches.
  • Sony Michel is really starting to feel it.  And Schottenheimer is doing a great job making use of his skill set.  All in all, it’s like watching the Georgia version of Percy Harvin.  Every time Georgia lines up in a set with Chubb and Michel, you have to hold your breath.
  • Malcolm Mitchell is back, baby!  Great hands, great moves, great everything.  The save he made on Lambert’s throw that was supposed to be a back shoulder toss, but was a little more inside than you’d like, was as good as you’d like from a receiver.
  • Terry Godwin is smoove.
  • I’m not sure it’s possible to be more wide open than Reggie Davis was on that one reception.
  • Five completions to the tight ends and two more to Quayvon Hicks.  Me likee.
  • To me, Lambert’s success was about trusting his surrounding cast more and being put in good spots throughout the night by Schottenheimer.  The quick throws that were there all night – really, the South Carolina defensive backs are going to be having unpleasant dreams about those slant passes for a while – were a great way to cut down on Lambert’s propensity for looking down his receivers.  (Although, in his defense, he did a better job with checking off than he’s done before.  It’s just that it’s still a work in progress.)  You can do plenty when you make a quarterback comfortable and give him plenty of weapons to work with.
  • For those of you complaining that Lambert’s biggest flaw of the night was not throwing deep, my only question is why did he need to?
  • I’ve already lauded Schottenheimer’s night in a previous post, so it’s not really necessary to dig into that again.  But it is nice to know the guy isn’t as big an idiot as some folks have made him out to be.  His next big challenge is going to be figuring out a game plan against a defense that can play press coverage against Georgia’s receivers.

All in all, a great, great game.  The coaches coached; the players played.  The defense looks more assured week by week.  (And remember, Saturday night Pruitt had to plug a true freshman in Abram into the starting lineup because of McGraw’s injury.  They still didn’t miss a beat.)  Offensively, it feels like Schottenheimer is figuring out how to fit all the parts together and the timing of that is coming along fine.

But the best part of Saturday was the psychology behind the win.  That was Steve Spurrier they beat, the guy who has made a career out of maneuvering Georgia teams into routinely crapping the bed.  If there was a time for a Richt team to slide mentally and emotionally, especially after a win in Nashville that left a few questions in our heads, this was it.  Instead, what was delivered was a game of total control.  It wasn’t just that Georgia won convincingly.  It was that it appeared natural in doing so.  If there’s any reason to begin to feel optimistic about where this season may be headed, that’s it.  I don’t know if Georgia’s going to beat Alabama in a couple of weeks, but I’ve got a pretty good feeling they’ll show up to play.  And that’s real progress.

I’m not overly concerned (yet) about our option D… if only because of how we handled Auburn last year. I have (want) to believe that Pruitt knew the game was over once SC started using the option that much. Yes it yielded a TD, but making SC stay with the run when they were already down 14 pretty much told me that Spurrier didn’t have a lot of answers and Pruitt knew it as well.

9 true freshmen played on defense during the Cock’s last scoring drive. Impressively, that same green bunch stopped them the next drive.

  2. I love the point about Malkom Parrish. The kid is a player. You can tell he has the QB experience and is applying that to his play in the secondary. He is becoming what Nick Marshall would have been without becoming the Thief.

That Bama-@UT-Mizzou stretch still worries me, and I’ll never feel comfortable about Jax, but I really, really like the makeup of this team. Just keep getting better. Plus, serving Spurrier a fiftyburger is as awesome as it gets.

It was a fun game to attend. It had the same electric feel and “can’t lose” mentality of the 2007 Auburn game.

  5. We saw on Saturday how a disciplined, athletic defense can handle Tech’s “UNSTOPPABLE, GREATEST OFFENSE EVER!!!”. Georgia’s defense is faster than Notre Dame’s. Get them to play assignment football and let’s embarrass the Nerds this year.

I know it’d be a huge order, but I don’t think Fish Fry’s offense has been shut out since he was at Navy. So if we could pull that off on Historic Mark Richt Field in Atlanta this year, that’d be a great regular season capper.

The offense was as close to perfect as possible, and any negatives out of the other two phases feel like nitpicking. They shored up coverage in the second half. No field goals were missed. The defense likely had no game plan for Nunez considering that was his first action. I won’t say this is a team that should win the SEC yet, because Alabama, Ole Miss and LSU (maybe A&M) all look good enough to beat them on a given day, but to lose the East this year will be a failure.

Settle down Senator, all wins vs unranked teams like Louisiana Monroe, Vanderbilt, and South Carolina.

This was a South Carolina with a back up QB, backup RB, and backup Center.

UGA is an unknown until it gets through Bama, Tenn, Aub, Mizzou, and GT.

Remember, Richt hasn’t won the SEC since 2005, he usually finds a way to lose a critical game somewhere along the way.

Ok, put those rose glasses back on, WHAT A WIN over healthy and top ranked South Carolina, powerhouse Lousiana Monroe, and SEC powerhouse Vanderbilt!!!!!

  8. Only quibble I have with Schotty’s playcalling so far, and this is really nitpicking – but anyone else notice that anytime we complete a pass or have a big run that goes for 15+ yards down the field, and we try to go hurry up after that, it’s always the exact same play? (What looks like an inside zone run by Chubb.) And every time it gets stuffed for short yardage, so we go from just having made a big play, to putting ourselves in 2nd and long. Now it’s possible that Schotty is intentionally trying to establish this as a tendency, so he can pull out a surprise when needed. It just seems like in all 3 games, every time we’ve gone hurry up after a long play, it’s always the same play, with the same result.

But again, that’s just total nitpicking. That game was called masterfully by Schotty overall.

If he’s saving anything for the Bama game, I hope it’s something like the 3-TE flex-out look New England has used in goal to go situations this season.
We don’t have a Gronk, but between Rome, Blazevitch, Jordan Davis, and one of the FBs, I think we could run those plays.

Pruitt did a masterful job on Pharoh. The secondary was on him like ticks…uh….Dawgs on a tick every pass sent his way. They shored up what I’ve seen as an Achilles Heel for many games and made it look easy.

Lambert shows us he is very capable of putting one pass after another on target. Everyone should review what he has done n the previous two games, factor in what a talent he is and proceed to look with differing eyes on his game play. He needs us all behind him like a favorite son that he is. That has to be one proud family and friends in Jesup. We should join them wholeheartedly in supporting Lambert, who has now joined the legends with this single game output and appreciate the receivers all the more for making it possible for him. They never missed a pass that was near them. Wow!

That O-line – whoo boy! Not a spot on Lambert’s uniform. No one got close. The RBs and the D-line did more than their part to make this shivaree happen.

Not least of all was the job all the coaches did, but especially the receivers’ coaches and the top of the hill are the ones responsible for our QB’s success. Guess the question has been answered as to what a different team, O-line and coaches can do for a QB plus it appears that we have an additional magnet to Richt as a QB attractant in Schottenheimer.

Does anyone have any doubt about the recruits being entertained and seeing themselves on our field?

It will be great to watch that game between two mirror-image teams and the significance of pocket passers against pocket passers. Old fashioned SEC football with some good modern twists.

Welcome to HUNH with those 100 plays. Is Kiffen slipping and did we see someone telling him to get off the field and let his players get to the huddle? Who was that? Inquiring minds wish to know.

  20. To add an asterisk (by way of emphasis) to your first bullet, I assume the guys on the field appreciated the spontaneous chants of “UGA” that sprang up in the stands following the 4th Q shoving incident/4 flag confusion.

Also agree re: the “psychology behind the win.” It’s possible of course that this win will be no more a predictor of final success than were MO ’14 or LSU ’13, but there seemed to be a streak of confidence and even (dare I say it?) gritty meanness Saturday that MAY be enough to overcome some later brain fart tendency.

P.S. I hope Carolina has a better appreciation now of what it means to be treated as a full on rival.

I am not sure how well this win predicts the rest of the season, but I do think it predicts the future of the Ga-SC series. The talent gap between the two teams was astonishing – Moore and Cooper are probably the only SC players who could even crack Georgia’s 2-deep. Spurrier was able to attract some great players the last few years, but Clowney, Lattimore, Shaw, and Jeffrey are long gone. Between his age and his ill-advised comments on possibly retiring, Spurrier just can’t reload anymore. Meanwhile, Georgia is recruiting as well as it ever has. Maybe, just maybe, order is being restored and we will regain our dominance over the Chickens.

I am tending to temper my excitement for a while. It was great to see Lambert have such a good game and also see out Offense open up BUT we have a wounded elephant coming to town in a few weeks. I can guarantee that Alabama will not give up another 5 turnovers during a game in Saban’s remaining years there. Ole Miss was a good team last weekend but the elephants beat themselves Sat night. I doubt that happens twice in one season. So everybody back in Georgia enjoy the halftime show next weekend because the following week is when we truly find out what kind of team we have.

As one who was definitely in the “doubt for Greyson” group, I was stunned at how well he played, and how they took off the handcuffs and let him throw. It was awesome. I still get a bit nervous in how he stares down his primary receiver, but to see him hit some check downs was nice. Chubb was spectacular, Michel would start for most any other team in the country and Mitchell was fantastic. Could not be more impressed with how the young guys are holding up on defense and how Pruitt is able to teach freshman to be game ready so quickly. I feel better about this defensive coaching staff than any since Erk. Jenkins was a beast despite not many tackles for loss and who would have thought that moving Leonard Floyd to middle linebacker would be such a great move. He is covering slot receivers well and puts a hurt on the QB with regularity. Overall, an impressive day that was fun to watch even on DVR!

Great synopsis and you’re right about the press coverage. Why sos didn’t challenge our receivers at the line is perplexing given the success Vandy had.

The one thing you didn’t mention and I haven’t seen anywhere else is when Trenton swallowed their running back in the back field late in the game. I would love to see a clip of that.

    Once again… great read.

Blutarsky, you’re much better sticking to Georgia football than wasting capital on the NCAA. You’re takeaways were right on the money regarding the SC game.
