How much of a poster boy is Keith Marshall?

Today, the AJ-C asks the musical question, “Will new OC Jim Chaney be more effective than previous UGA staff at utilizing talent?”.  If by “staff” they mean Brian Schottenheimer, well, okay, I suppose.  But if this is intended as a larger scale criticism of Richt’s offense, it’s only fair to point out Georgia’s national ranking in offensive yards per play over the previous seven seasons:

I looked but couldn’t find a year in there when Jim Chaney coached an offense with a better ypp ranking than Bobo.

By the way, last year Georgia was 40th.  Pittsburgh was 56th.  Now it’s fair to note that Georgia had more talent at its disposal, at least until Chubb’s injury, but looking back further, it’s hard to argue Georgia was doing that poor a job with utilization.

This isn’t to say I wish Keith Marshall’s touches hadn’t been significantly higher in 2015.  But it isn’t to say that Chaney’s a slam dunk, either, at least compared to Bobo’s history in Athens.  Particularly if we’re not being overly pessimistic about the talent holes on offense this season.

Pitt lost James Conner on Sept. 7. He was a really special back.

  2. I haven’t thought of Chaney as a slam dunk. I like the Pittman hire more than Chaney, but Pittman likely isn’t in Athens without Chaney.

Mike Bobo was a darn good offensive coordinator since 2011. There’s a part of me that wants Bobo to struggle at CSU, so Kirby can bring him back to run the offense.

I really don’t care where we rank in ypp as long as we win the games we need to win in order to get a championship of some kind. Being ranked #1 in 2012 got us the “5 yards away” trophy, I’m sure it is prominently displayed at BM. I’ll take being ranked 129th in ypp if we win an SEC championship with that offense.

You can keep trotting out the statistics that you think prove we have been a great program the last 10 seasons. You know what they say about statistics. I’m still waiting to see the “5 Yards Away” t shirts or the “Highest Rated 3 Loss Team” bumper stickers. I’ll keep wanting championships and not think of a close loss as one of the greatest games in Georgia history.

Please just shut up about it with the fucking Eeyore act and move on. The schtick is old. We get it. You wanted Richt gone. Guess what – he’s gone.

Yes, but that crowd, and their attitude, is like shooting fish in a barrel. Just an unhappy bunch. UGA has 12 SEC titles, every other year was pure misery. Fun group.

As to the “Bobo returning as an assistant” wish, wtf is that? How can anyone wish him anything but success? None of us know yet, but at this point, he is the more qualified HC and the one who went out to earn his stripes. That alone puts him ahead in the race at this point. I hope they both succeed, too early to call, but I admire the way CMB grew into a top coordinator, and then took the step to prove himself. I have fewer questions about him as a HC.

It was about asking you to move on from beating this dead horse and stop re-hashing this stupid conversation that has already been had eleventy billion times that everybody is pretty fucking sick and tired of having. It’s the reason a lot of us dreaded coming to this site for the last few seasons. The Senator touched on it numerous times.

Secondly – your insinuation that because you want championships as priority one makes your fandom seemingly more legit than those of us that enjoy the other things about the entire Georgia football experience (things you dismiss as ‘whistling “Zippidee Do Da” and telling yourself everything is great’) and dismissive of us is so loathsome.

@JCDAWG83: You said, “I’ll take being ranked 129th in ypp if we win an SEC championship with that offense.” Fine, I would too. But don’t just use SEC championships as your measuring stick. If you were an Alabama fan, you would be well satisfied. They have won 25 SEC championships. UGA has won 12 SEC championships. You’re unhappy, that’s not enough. Fine. So what other program would make you happy? Tennessee has won 1 more SEC championship than we have, but I wouldn’t trade our program for theirs for all the Smokies on Rocky Top. LSU has one less championship than us. Florida and Auburn have 4 less, Ole Miss 6 less and all the rest together have less than us. Bama is the Hertz of the SEC true, but we’re definitely Avis, and we’re just gonna have to try harder. The way to clearly differentiate ourselves from the Tennessees and LSUs of the world is to take pride in our past successes and build on them, not to denigrate our history. The notion that UGA is a second rank program is something that northern sports commentators with axes to grind (like Mark May) try to foist upon us. If we act like we’re proud of our program then others will notice our achievements. Then in years like 2007, we’ll be the ones that get the benefit of the doubt.

I was blown away by Marshall’s 40 time. Is the going consensus out there that he was still recovering last fall?

Very impressive straight line speed. KM was not given many chances in games, but he was seen every day in practice and was still 4th on the depth chart. After the injury we never saw those quick cuts and often went down easily. Great young man, and I hope he busts it wide open in the NFL, but I think he got his shots. Like everyone else, I was surprised he didn’t earn his way back to a position to play in 2015 and that desn’t bode well for his 2016 chances. Sometimes RBs are never the same, and some just take take longer to heal. Marshall said last summer that he was 100% but he really didn’t seem to be.

Bobo needed some on the job learning, but once he got this education, he was as good as anyone in the coaching aspect. The last 2 years are especially impressive considering the injuries and overall offensive talent. Notwithstanding 2015, offense was rarely the problem in the Richt era.

If anyone left isn’t scratching their head here on the “what ifs” then they have the Richt apologist blinders on. Keith’s talent was wasted at UGA. I get he was injured but it appeared he was never even given much of a chance to get back into the rotation this past year.

Whether Chaney can out pace Bobo in YPP doesn’t really concern me. YPP is overrated. UGA averaged 8.2 YPP against Bama in the 12 SECCG, but had seven 3 & outs. First downs is a better indicator and more important than YPP. That same 2012 squad finished 58th in the country in first downs. Think about that…Aaron Murray, Todd Gurley, (the best version we had of) Keith Marshall, Lynch, T. King, Mitchell, Conley, & Bennett. That team should have been a first down machine but was far from it.

I want Chaney out pace Bobo in first downs. The 08 and 12 offenses were easily the two most talented Bobo had and they finished 34th and 58th in the country. No way those two offenses should have finished that low in first downs, especially 2012.

Sorry, the YPP in the SECCG was 6.25.

    • I could care less about either statistic. The only one that matters is points per game. If you get a bunch of first downs and kick field goals, big deal. I’ll take it if we score TDs in bunches like we did in ’12, ’13 and ’14.

If you run for a 50 yard TD, or throw 3 passes for 30+ yards you don’t have many first downs. Getting the most FDs does not make you the winner of the game. Scoring more than the other guy does. We had an explosive O in 2012. That is what you look for – not how many times you can eke out 10 yards in 4 downs. Maybe you should root for GT. They get lots of first downs.

Root for GT because I think first downs is a more indicative stat of how good a coordinator is than YPP. Sound logic there, friend…sound logic.

The premise of the post is stats. Everyone knows the winning team is the one who scored more than the other, but thank you for stating the obvious, captain.

I don’t think of Chaney as so much a slam dunk but a quality hire, especially for the talents that Eason unquestionably brings. Add in Pittman and some big uglies, get Chubb healed, and get Michel, Godwin and McKenzie loose some in the open field, and Whoa Nelly!

It’s a stupid premise. Running fast in a straight line is not what running backs do in football. If that were the case every 100 yard sprinter on the track team would be starting at tailback. Marshall didn’t play much because he lost faith in his knees, then couldn’t regain his balance and vision enough to overtake others on the depth chart.

    • He got yards when given the rock. Something else was going on. He was in CBS’s dog house for some reason.

You may be right that there was something else going on, but that’s really speculative. And most of the big gainers that he had were during garbage time or against inferior competition, so it’s hard to say he would’ve been just as effective against more motivated competition earlier in the season.
