Smart may indeed be. But is Greg McGarity?
Perhaps that’s why he paid that search firm the big bucks.

“We remember the Sugar Bowl, I think it my junior year of high school, we let Alabama beat us twice,” Brinson said of a team that also lost to the Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship game. “We’re not letting Alabama beat us twice. In the Sugar Bowl in 2018, they… thought they should have been in the playoffs and lost to Texas.” -- AB-H, 12/27/23
Still think McGarity knew who he wanted. Smart was targeted from the beginning imo. The search firm….what a waste of cash, just like McGarity.

If you’re an AD in need of plausible deniability in case the hire flops, that money is hardly wasted.

Of course…for him.

Plausible…I do not think this word means what you think it means.

Depends on your point of view, doesn’t it?

Is it really your point of view that McGarity was in charge of firing Richt/hiring ah…Coach Smart?

Sure, but I don’t even know which point of view matters at this point.

Put it this way: McGarity’s matters more than yours or mine does. 😉

mmm, well, slightly more than yours or mine.

I think McGarity is in full Bobinski mode – not communicating with anyone unless it is Morehead or the liquor barons.

I can only imagine the dysfunction if anyone at BM is thinking of firing Kirby at the end of this year. We’d be in full on Auburn territory if there is that level of unhappiness and tumult going on.

Smart has 5 more years on his contract. He’s not going anywhere.

I thought the search firm was CYA for background check type of stuff (i.e. O’Leary’s resume). I didn’t think it was CYA in case the hire doesn’t win enough games.

It doesn’t cost $40k to do a background check 😉

Oh, I couldn’t agree more. But they’re supposedly paying for peace of mind.
I’ve yet to hear an AD blame a search firm when firing a coach for team performance. Maybe I missed one but I didn’t think that anyone had attempted to do that. I’d imagine that situation would involve a lawsuit and a countersuit.

I know … it was clearly the AD’s fig leaf

I agree with ATL Dawg in that we paid $40k for essentially a background check and a coaching profile. I believe it was one guy who McGarity said came to the SECCG with his laptop and they sat in a hotel room looking at coaching assessments/candidates or something like that before offering the job to Kirby hours or days later. I’m sure the entire process was slanted with hiring Kirby in mind. It wasn’t like he hired IMG to do a full blown search or something. This is probably the biggest issue I have with the whole thing, not that we hired Kirby or didn’t hire Herman, Fuentes, etc., but that we did at best a half assed search and had already decided on the final choice ahead of time whether or not he was the best candidate. In Chicago, we know all about “when the fix is in”.

Well at least USCe can always be envious that we pulled the trigger to keep him from them. Then again we may look back and wish the powers that be had not acted in panic mode.

Maybe we should’ve used the search firm for the ST and O assistant hires too.

The real problem is we did not use a search firm to find us a search firm.

“More often than not, there’s an adjustment period when a new head coach takes over a program. Georgia, however, didn’t seem like a rebuilding job. The Bulldogs won 10 games in four out of the past five seasons and returned a plethora of contributors from last year’s squad.”

You have to feel for the coaches in this day of 24 hour all sports channels and the internet. They take shots deserved, and not, from many who not only aren’t in the arena, but totally clueless about sports at even lower levels. Being the son of a coach, I am sure Kirby has tough skin and will weather the storms from the recliners of thousands of experts weekly. It is the family of the coaches, especially their children, that I feel most sorry for.
