A teaching moment

It was a soul-numbing game, but the topper came for those of us stupid enough to stay until the end.

  • 2nd and 6 at UGA 28

(0:55 – 4th) Jordan Scarlett run for 3 yds to the Geo 25

  • (0:45 – 4th) Timeout GEORGIA, clock 00:45
  • 3rd and 3 at UGA 25

Kirby Smart thought it was necessary to call a time out with his team down by fourteen points and less than a minute to go in the game.  With Georgia on defense.

My mind is still boggled by that.  It will stay that way for a while, I fear.

Georgia loses the River City Showdown.

That game doesn’t deserve to be associated with the Cocktail Party designation.

Game day post, Cocktail Party edition

There are plenty of analytical posts out there about today’s game, if that’s your cup of tea.  Ed Aschoff writes a couple of good pieces about Georgia needing to establish the run game and Florida’s problems in the end zone, for example.

But as much as I try to get in the weeds and figure out the keys to the game, I keep coming back to one simple factor.

Georgia needs to show up.

Before you mock me for the depth of that insight, let me remind you not about the games this season when the Dawgs failed to do that, but about the last two games in Jacksonville that I had the displeasure of witnessing in person.  In 2014, the players didn’t show up (or at least didn’t after Florida’s successful fake field goal) and ruined what had the potential to be a great season.  In 2015, the coaches didn’t show up and Mark Richt lost his job.

There’s nothing that dramatic on the line today.  Georgia is playing for little more than pride.  But that should mean enough in a rivalry game.  Kirby needs to show us that he’s got the coaching touch to point this team in the right direction.  I’m not crazy enough to think that showing up in and of itself guarantees a win, but I do believe that showing up means this Georgia team won’t embarrass itself.  After the Vanderbilt loss, that’s a good enough place to start for me.

Turn in a solid effort today and build on it, and 2016 won’t go down as a wasted year.  Yeah, that isn’t the kind of season we signed up for in December, but it is what it is.

Drip, drip, drip at Baylor

I figured this kind of stuff would eventually start to leak out:

The Journal on Friday quoted Baylor regents who detailed some of the Pepper Hamilton findings for the first time. According to the regents, in at least one case, Briles “knew about an alleged incident and didn’t alert police, the school’s judicial-affairs staff or the Title IX office in charge of coordinating the school’s response to sexual violence.”

I know winning means everything, and I know Briles hired Jimmy Sexton, but can you imagine the shitstorm that’s going to rain down on the athletic director who hires Briles next?

The only exception to the “don’t get married in the South in the Fall” rule…

… is getting married at the game site.

I guess we know where the happy couple will be celebrating their future anniversaries.

Uncle Verne reminisces about the Cocktail Party.

I’m not surprised this is his favorite moment.

Love that sly reference to Corch at the end.

Would it be too much to ask, Dawgs, if you could send him out today on an up note?
