Welcome back, kid.

I’ve been racking my brain trying to decide if this is a first

D’Antne Demery, an offensive lineman who signed with Georgia this February, was arrested in Athens on Saturday night.

Demery was charged with criminal trespass and simple battery, both misdemeanors. He was arrested by Athens-Clarke County police. The booking time is listed as 10:52 pm. and he was still in jail as of Sunday morning at 7:10 a.m.

The details of the situation were not immediately available. The jail web site lists “no bail family violence” on its report.

A native of Brunswick, Demery was attending G-Day with other signees and recruits.

… and I’ll be damned if I can come up with a similar incident in the past.

His first day after enrollment ought to be a blast.

And in case you’re wondering —

**********************************************************************

UPDATE:  Aw, jeez.  Forget what I said about that first day of enrollment.

Brunswick offensive lineman and 2017 Georgia signee D’Antne Demery was arrested Saturday evening on charges of criminal trespassing and simply battery.  On Sunday Dawgs247 was able to obtain a synopsis of the incident through a spokesman for the Athens Clarke-County police that shows why the four-star prospect was detained and now allowed to be released on bond.

On 04/22/17 at approximately 2115 hours, Downtown officers were dispatched to the area of the Waffle House, in reference to a black male choking (strangling) a female. Upon arrival, both individuals had left the area. Moments later, the victim called 911; advising that she wished to press charges against D’Antne Demery for hitting her. Contact was made with the victim in front of Boars Head. She stated that she and Demery got into an argument; he began to get loud, she started to walk off, he told her “walk off again, and Imma show you”. She began to walk away again, at which point, Demery came from behind her; grabbing her on the back of her neck; pushing her against the wall, and also grabbing her by the hair. They were eventually separated by friends. Demery was eventually able to reconnect with the victim, in which he threw her; causing her glasses to fall off, and her phone fell out of her hand; causing it to hit the ground which resulted in a crack to the screen. The victim and Demery are dating and have a one month old child together. They came to Athens to attend the G-Day game. Contact was eventually made with Demery who admitted to having physical contact with the victim. There was also an independent witness who saw the incident take place. The victim advised that Demery has been physically violent with her in the past. They are from Brunswick, Georgia. Demery was placed under arrest for the above charges; placed inside the Transport Van, and transported to the Clarke County Jail without incident

If that’s accurate, it’s hard to believe Demery will ever see the practice field in Athens again.

It’s not a problem limited to kids. I’ve practiced criminal law my whole career and at the same he was in jail, I would bet that there’s 3-4 other guys (and maybe a gal or two) in there similarly charged. But, he’s the one on football scholarship so it is news. The point is, no one thinks at the time it happens. So, they aren’t thinking anything; they are responding emotionally.

Speaking of thinking, when the GF realizes the charge will hurt his chances of playing football – and thus her chance at cashing in on a golden ticket for her and their child – I think she will change her view of what happened some. Unless there is some honest couples counseling, that cycle will continue.

A new day? Seriously? I can only assume you are referring back to the Wally Butts’ regime. The saints went marching out of all major sports, college football and UGA included, a long time ago.

To be clear, I think these kinds of incidents can’t be tolerated the kid should get sent to jail then man the crab traps in Brunswick. However, let’s not act like this is a new development because it isn’t. If you are exceptionally big, fast, strong, or agile you get a huge benefit of the doubt if not a plain and simple look the other way, always been that way.

Do I have this right? He’s a high school senior with a month-old baby?

Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Yes, he has this infant w/ one girl & a toddler from another girl. Two children before he’s even graduated high school.

If his scholly isn’t revoked very soon, that’s the last straw with CKS for me. Seriously.

Kirby was at alabama when they brought Taylor in so who knows where this goes. Personally, I think he should have the scholly revoked.

As an aside I ran across this recently. Check out the statement and crowd reaction at 5:40.

Healthy relationship. At least she called the cops on him — good for her. I guess we’ll all be taking care of the kid instead of Dad. He ought to be an indentured servant to the state as long as the kid is getting any kind of support.

Specific to this blog, he ought to never walk on the field for UGA. Guess we can all take care of his sorry ass in prison instead of with our contributions.

  8. Sounds like a psycho in the making. Another had it all but ended up in prison story in the making. I’m not usually so judgemental but this dude has a 1 month old baby by this girl and is just getting his college career started and is already choking out his baby momma at Waffle House. On another note…a good prospect at a real position of need never getting to play a down for UGA is definitely the GEORGIA WAY.

    • It just hit me. A 1 month old? What kind of parents leave a 1 month old with a sitter ( even family ) while they go to Athens for a good time. Both parents are disgusting. Poor kid.

No, they are not. Perhaps immature, irrational, misguided, and naive but not “kids”. Tired of excusing bad behavior. Hate to see talent, and opportunity wasted (yes, even the NFL cannot hide from this any longer), but we don’t need this crapola anywhere near campus, or on the team.

Don’t know enough to say what the level of penalty should be but I am confident it won’t be enough to make a difference in his future behavior. Chances are high this will not be the worst we will see from Demery, according to the female this wasn’t the first time, he already has a pattern of abuse. Better we know this up front.

If you’re lucky enough to work somewhere that offers maternity benefits, most places only offer 6 weeks of unpaid leave. The baby is almost at minimum daycare age for this country, and that is what is disgusting.

And I should note that this is what a friend working for a large corporation in the south (multi-state offices) had. Maybe other places are more generous, but a lot aren’t, or are small enough that they don’t have to offer anything at all. My mother taught pre-school for several years in association with a daycare center, and six weeks was the standard minimum age for infant care.

Gotta let him go. Zero tolerance. No place for it. Best way to help him is to make him face some real consequences by pulling his scholarship. Regardless of your opinion I’m going to guess that Kirby will at least try to find some way to justify keeping this kid on scholarship. The Richt era is over, and The Process is here.

  11. he need to be gone. the only thing he has EVER done for UGA is make a commitment and the CCSD arrest blotter. send his big butt back to the coast. block him from signing with any other SEC or ACC school; I think CKS and the parameters of his LOI allow that.

Why exactly? I wanted the scholarship pulled, but how is Rodrigo the best recipient? We have another kicker, seemingly with better credentials, coming on campus this summer, let’s have a competition for that scholarship. Kirby gave Rodrigo a list of things he expected this past winter, I didn’t see much improvement yesterday from his work last year. I have nothing against him but his father demanding a scholarship shouldn’t move him to the top of the list. There may be better uses, someone more deserving, the coaches should decide based on that, imo, and he doesn’t look like a slam dunk to me. I am just glad we got one back from Demery today.

        • I’m not glad we got a scholarship back today. It’s terrible for all involved. The young man blew an educational opportunity that many high school seniors who were denied entrance to UGA this year would have loved to have. It’s terrible for the young woman to be treated in this way. She’s probably going to hear about it in Brunswick. It’s bad for our football team because those offensive line recruits seemed to develop a bond with one another. It’s terrible for Kirby and Pittman because they invested a lot of time in recruiting the guy. Kirby did the right thing by cutting the young man loose. I hope the young man (and woman) can put the pieces back together and move on with their lives.

Not getting it back means he would be on campus in June, so yeah, I am really glad we have it back. No one is glad about the incident, but the alternative to not recalling the offer was unacceptable.

I have no intention of defending what he is alleged to have done, but ‘zero tolerance’ is basically what he told her he had for her. It’s more of an emotional response than a thoughtful one. Unless he’s done this before – and if he did, Kirby has failed in his due diligence – why shouldn’t he get a second chance? Y’all act like none of y’all have ever done anything impulsively stupid. With a female involved. Yeah, right.

My main point is that this sort of thing, if he gets a second chance here, is not going to be solved by running steps or doing community service. Kirby needs to find a counselor that will be honest with him and let him know if the kid buys into counseling. If he does buy in, it may be the best thing that ever happened to him.

Wow. Dude has 2 kids ….I guess they’re supposed to raise themselves while Dad is in jail or playing football.

Seriously though it’s a sad story – absentee father and mother died last year – but the help he needs (which he needs plenty of) isn’t found in college.

Kirby has seen this before and he knows what he has to do. Now, will he do it?

Money is ruining college sports, for sure, but nothing will erode personal interest in my alma mater’s team faster than allowing violent criminals being allowed to represent it.

Kid with marginal high school grades who busts it to make the most of a scholarship opportunity? Fantastic. Teenager that has to work through the consequences and responsibilities of maturing into an adult when it comes to alcohol, drugs, driver’s licenses, and (at UGA) giving your middle name? Understandable. Nothing is better than a good redemption story (Malcolm Mitchell, Ledbetter, Herrien, etc.).

Still, any guy that would threaten or initiate violence against someone else, especially a female, should earn their redemption without the privelage of an athletic scholarship. If this story is even half true, he better be gone.

Not to get too legalistic but both trespass and simple assault are misdemeanors. He isn’t going to serve any time at all, probably end up in a diversion program. I agree that this sounds horrible but it is probably repeated hundreds of times across the US every Saturday night.
If an employee or faculty member at a unionized university did this they wouldn’t lose a day’s pay, let alone get fired.
