That play is going nowhere even without Payne.
49 is who really blows that play up. Cleveland is too slow off the ball.

That clip wasn’t really about who blew the play up, just what a physical freak Payne was Monday night.
The only times I saw him stopped was when he was double-teamed and the blockers were able to direct his first step away from where the back was going.

I get that it was about him being a freak. Guys like that are why this region rules football. Nobody else produces guys that big who can move. It’s like a DL of grizzly bears.

Cleveland did his job, he took his player out of the play. As far as him being too slow….last I looked, he runs about a 5.0/40….not bad for a big guy.

I’m happy for you to tell me where the ball is designed to go other than right at Mack Wilson. Once 74 lets their guy get across his face and he fills that hole, there’s no where for Chubb to go. If 74 beats his guy to the point, Chubb follows Lamont up to the LB level and has a chance at some yards even with Payne coming around. Payne gets there bc Chubb hesitates for lack of places to go.

Understood……Okay, what is his quick time?? As far as where the ball is designed to go, I don’t know the play call. But it looks as though Chubb was initially wanting to take it to the left….either off center, guard or tackle, then he had to redirect. Hence, the hesitation….Payne already in the backfield…Chubb was trying to get away from Payne. No way to blame Cleveland on this play, silly to do so…he did his job. Payne just beat his man and made the play, easy to see.

The initial question is: where is the ball going? If you think the ball was going at 74 then you’re right that he should have taken his momentum and cleared 49 out to the right (as we look at it).
The reason I’m not sure that’s right is what 71 does. There’s no reason to help 74 if the ball is going between 71 and 74. That would be counter productive. Because 71 helps and then turns out on 32, think the play design was between 74 and Lamont. When 74 gets beat he tries to make the best of it.
Either 74 got out quicker at the snap or 71 has no clue as to what his assignment is.

Well, it certainly was not a trap play….no one is pulling. Looks like they are zone blocking, doing man. Which leads me to believe that Cleveland took care of his man, his assignment… took him out of the play. Through the years, our backs have not always gone where the play is designed….sometimes they wait for an opening/crease and take it elsewhere….could be the case. Who knows the play call….but to say Cleveland is too slow off the ball is absurd. Payne made this play, no two ways around it.

74 who knows the snap count or 49 who presumably doesn’t?
49 is lined up outside 74 and 49 beats him inside. 49 is moving fast and 74 is moving slow.
Payne wouldn’t have gotten there if there was a hole. He would have ended up behind the play. Nick stops because 74’s guy (49) is directly in front of him. That can’t be doing his job.
Re-watch the play and tell me what happens if 74 beats him to the spot and seals him off.

AgEng….I don’t have time to teach you football. It is obvious to anybody with a half a brain that Payne blew that play up. I am sure you will have someone on here that may agree with you…and hopefully, that will make you feel better. You took a classless shot at Cleveland…and an uninformed one too (“too slow”). You probably need to just stick with politics over on TOS…but then again, maybe not-you are too extreme there too. “Bless your heart”

Actually it looked like it was Nauta that got beat. If he stones his man then Chubb follows 74 and 71 before Payne ever gets there.

Did you notice that he was left (meaning Cleveland) floundering on most of his plays by the defensive lineman using a basic swim technique…simply left him standing helplessly while the defense ate up Fromm or the runner?

He probably is, was hoping to see Drew Lock go pro but looks like we will be facing him again next year. I hope Trenton Thompson plays another year. Potentially, he can be as good as Payne imo….he just is not there just yet. Great year, looking forward to the next season.

He started on the blockers inside shoulder, step outside, swatted him out of the way, then ran down the line to make the tackle. That was incredible.

Not sure what the blocker could have done any better. The guard had to push inside because the play was going that way. It appeared that Payne was going to go through the inside gap. One step outside, with the guard going inside and Payne was by him. That is a crazy fast 1st step for a guy of that size. The only way they stop him on that play is if the center is responsible for him and the guard helps out. Then the guard can be ready for that step to the outside.

A lot of twisting and stunting in that game. Can’t tell, but that looks like Baker that got beat. Payne is gonna beat a lot of people, too much talent.

Well Thomas blows his assignment also…if there is one thing we can as a program pull from this game, is we can tell recruits see I told you we need you here at CB and DL. If we had you…you make the play and we win because of you. Good news…we probably play them for the SEC next year. Better news Payne will be gone along with many of their starters on defense…bad news they probably have a 5 star waiting in the wings…that’s ok we do too on the OL…

the Alabama talent gap is going to be non-existent or in our favor if we get Baker, Natrez, and Thompson back next year.
Obviously it matters who Bama’s DC is, but I still think Pruitt is the best DC in the country and you don’t get better by losing him.

Either that play is designed to go bw the guard and tackle and it’s on 18 OR the play is designed to go over the center and it’s on 74.
The only guy that makes any attempt at creating a seal is 71. 24 and 49 are coming down hard and someone has to stop them. 18 and 74 don’t.
71 turns out on 32 telling me the design was for the play to go inside of him. Which exact spot may be debated. It may just be that running into that sort of slanting front is just not possible.

from my few times watching the clip, it appears to me that #24 is the on who blew up the play. Once he crashes down hard, Chubb has absolutely nowhere to go. Thomas sealing the outside backer, does point to the play going inside or at least to the left ( of the right tackle ) – Still, the clip shows Payne’s ‘quick’ for sure.

Where did he come from? It seems like he only “played” the playoff games. I don’t remember him taking over other games like he did Clemson and Georgia.

Their D line traditionally soaks up blocks and clogs running lanes, freeing up pursuit for LBs to clean things up. I haven’t seen them turn Payne loose like that ever. Maybe it was an adjustment to the LB injuries.

The good news bulldogs fans, is that your O-line will only to continue to get bigger and more cohesive, and that should help you to score more points than Alabama in what I’m going out on a limb and saying will be the matchup we see in Atlanta next December.

Unfortunately the rules of NCAA college football required UGA to run directly at their best player over and over again. No other choices, really. Rules.

OTOH, why the refs didn’t stop Alabama from targeting Georgia’s weakest player on defense, in clear violation of the rules, is just another example of how we got hosed.

Payne is and was a terror. Their whole line and scheme creates trouble for everybody. Nauta wasn’t able to block 24, which also killed that play. A hole did open up on Chubb’s left side, but there was already too much blowing up.
Payne moves like a LB, but even still, I’d love to see how that play went if 24 doesn’t blow by Nauta. Not really blaming Nauta, though, because he’s been a great blocker all year. Good on good, and Bama won those a lot, like they have for the past decade.
