Georgia Tech athletic director Todd Stansbury will be one of the six new College Football Playoff selection committee members, multiple sources told ESPN on Wednesday.
If Georgia’s in the hunt for the playoffs again, the Stingtalk threads about this move ought to be epic.

He won’t have to if the committee follows the SEC’s rule on officials. We get a dose of GT officials every damn year.

A GnaT on the selection committee + even a single loss on our schedule next fall in the regular season is a recipe for some antsy moments on the first Sunday of next December, even if we win the SECCG. Three absolute cupcakes plus GT for our non-SEC lineup is really tempting fate and moreover it is grossly unfair to the fans and incompatible with the kind of program that CKS is in the process of building. It’s past time for our AD to start putting together some decent OOC matchups for the next decade.

Should we have a tough OOC schedule like Bama (Louisville, Arkansas St, UL Laffayette and The Citadel) or should it be more daunting like Clemson (Furman, Georgia Southern, Texas A&M and South Carolina)? Don’t forget Clemson also gets to play in the weak as water ACC too. Urban showed the college football world how to get in the championship game when he was at Florida. Win your conference and schedule cupcakes so you don’t get knocked out by a regular season loss. Fans need to get used to terrible OOC matchups until the playoff is redesigned to pit conference champions against each other in a true playoff format.

If we ever get to where the SECCG is absolute, 100% for all-the-marbles, then we need to eliminate divisions first. Obviously, such a move is actually not in UGA’s best interest, being in the weaker division (for now, but methinks that’s changing), but that’s the only way to not have the 8-4 team in the playoff because of a single upset based on a purely geographic construction of divisions.
This kind of goes to what made me mad about the talking heads’ criticism of Alabama’s presence in the playoffs. It’s disingenuous to state “they didn’t even play for the conference title” OR “even win their division”….as if that should be counted as 2 separate arrows in the anti-bama argument. The only difference between Alabama and Georgia (getting a 2nd chance at Auburn) was that we sit in the eastern time zone. Not trying to downplay what we did……we won the damn thing by the book, but if we’re going to start an auto-bid process, we need a division-less league.

I can agree with that but I think the playoff should be set up with 8 conferences of 12 teams each and let each conference decide how they pick their champion. If a conference wants divisions and a championship game (most would imo because of the money generated by the championship game), that is the conference’s decision. If they want some other record or head to head type decision like the SEC had before expansion, that’s fine too. Heck, if a conference decided to put it’s highest ranked team or a team deemed the “best” by some conference committee, that’s fine too. The bottom line would be that each conference would send a team to the playoff and the ultimate winner of the playoff would be a true National Champion.
However it was done; once the specter of one regular season loss possibly derailing a team’s chances of getting in the playoff, some really good OOC games could be scheduled. We would see home and home series between traditional football powers from different conferences every year since neither team would be risking a playoff spot with a loss. The big losers would be the mid major programs who would lose those lucrative paydays they get by travelling to the P5 programs to take their million dollar ass whippings.

Your 8 conference idea would be fine except for contracts and lawsuits from those who feel disadvantaged by the changes. It will never get done, but I do think conference champs should get in, and that 8 is the ultimate number. I also don’t care how they choose their representative, but feel like all Power 5s have to be in.

Having AD’s from majors is a receipt for disaster. Who thought that one up? If this is OK then Auburn’s AD should be on it too. It’s unfair to the schools under consideration for the CP and unfair to the poor schmuck AD that will be feeling pressure from his enemies, the enemies of his enemy, and his own prejudices battling with his need to be honest. What a stupid mess.

Could make for some interesting conspiracy theories next fall. But on the plus side, talking heads will certainly be very critical of Georgia’s out-of-conference schedule next year. The case will have to be made that Tech represents a good OOC opponent. Hopefully Tech’s AD would support that line of thinking …

Again; I’ll ask you like I asked Legate above, which P5 power team plays a tough OOC schedule? None do, it is in no team with any aspirations of making the playoff to schedule tough OOC opponents.
If Notre Dame had beaten us and the rest of the season had played out exactly the same, I think the committee would have taken Bama over a 2 loss SEC champion Georgia.

I feel it is every bit as likely an AD of your a rival, pitiful as they may be in that “role”, would be influenced against you as your own AD would be for you. He has to sit out. And who would think selecting a guy from a non-football school is a good idea anyway?
