Job security

I have a simple question.

How bad would Auburn have to be this season for Malzahn to be fired on December 1st without cause?  Honestly, I’m not sure I can come up with an adequate scenario.

Who in their right mind obligates themselves to that kind of money for a football coach?

    Was that rhetorical?

Auburn has to be the most bipolar athletics department in the country. We love Tuberville! No, we hate him, we want Bobby Petrino! loljk, we love Tubs again! Wait, no we don’t, we want Chizik! Woo national title, Chizik’s the man! Wait, no he isn’t, fire his ass! We want Malzahn! Hell yeah, Malzahn’s the best! Wait, no he isn’t, fire his ass! Wait, yes he is, he beat Alabama! Let’s give him an absurd buyout clause just three months after we were hoping he’d take the Arkansas job!

For that reason alone, I don’t think the bar for a 2018 firing is as high as it might seem. If Malzahn goes 7–5 this year and the AD spots something shiny on the horizon, they’ll place a call to the YellaWood guy and scrounge up enough couch pennies to give Gus the heave-ho.

Who in their right mind…? The kind that can get fans to pay for it while refusing to pay the labor.

    Auburn?

If I didn’t know better I’d say CKS and cns tanked at Auburn on purpose.

We strapped an albatross around their neck. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch.

I’m guessing they chose that because it’s the date of the SEC Championship. And maybe the buyout drops after that.

  10. After Georgia and Bama, the Barners thought all was well. As soon as Gus lost to UCF, they went back to Gus should be fired.

The money they are talking about with his buyout isn’t Yella Wood kind of money, and Bobby Lowder can’t raid a bank to buy him out either. They better get Tim Cook on the Fire Gus bandwagon because it’s going to take Apple money to do it now.

I wonder if “Without cause” is very clearly worded out in the contract. It would have to be wouldn’t it?
It boils down to 1. What is “cause”? and 2. Is Gus without it?
Could not either or both questions could delay the payout for years in court?

there are only 2 kinds of weeks at Auburn. Fire Gus weeks or Gas up the Gus Bus weeks.

It can be one or the other or both at the same time.

Auburn also opens with Washington next season. They could be on a 3 game losing streak before their first home game. They play LSU in week 3 and close the season @ UGA and @ Bama. It could be a tough year on the plains.

What if he gets dead at that time? Inquiring minds want to know and we will know when the Alabama Turkey shoots use his photo as the target this Thanksgiving.

Meantime, Jimmy Sexton is selling manufactured plastic counter tops purported to have gold flakes and ruby chips buried in them. You can see them if you don’t believe what he says.

IF I am Gus…I am playing the odds…and tempting fate…that new BMW supercar ain’t gonna pay for itself…$32M can buy a lot of them…(Gus has an i8 BMW is coming out with the M8 supercar)

Instead of salary, the school that pays out the most money after they fire their coach is the best and Auburn is running second in the race to A&M. Of course, A&M is bragging on their oil money available from their alums, but what does Auburn have as a largess – maybe dental school alums?

Now that we have the Fulmer Cup, maybe we add the Gus Cup for the school that gets the least for the most money? Who’s up for that?

They’re not the only idiots. Texas A&M kept Sumlin around longer than they would have preferred because of the guaranteed money in his contract. So how did they structure Jimbo’s contract? Mo money! Mo GUARANTEED money in fact.

Agents negotiating with athletic directors is like stealing candy from a baby! Athletic directors typically aren’t the most business savvy, and they are playing with other people’s money. At the end of the day people remember whether a coach won or lost, not their salaries.

Athletic directors are risk adverse. They can always take a less expensive route but if it fails they get the axe. Hence the constant recycling of the same names.

  20. There are folks around my neck of the woods, that want to fire him NOW. Amazing and they were in love with him after the Bama game. Such are fans. I would imagine they could find the money “hidden somewhere”.

They can say “We’re firing you CAUSE you suck at being a football coach”.

“without cause” is the crux of the issue. Depending on the language of the contract, he could go 0-12, and release the entire team from scholly, but, so long as he’s not found in violation of any of the reasons of “cause” in the contract, he’s getting paid. Ask Hugh Freeze and RichRod.

    • Did anything ever come out on what happened to Au that season? Did Chiz completely lose the team somehow? Were there racial problems? How do you go from a NC to shit in 2 years?

        Inexperienced OC after Gus left.
DC VanGorder brought in from the NFL to defend the spread.
        Willie Martinez.
One year lease on Cam expired.

Season went as one would expect.

One of the things that helped Saban from Day 1 was that he had a buyout so large that Bryant Jr and Lee Roy Jordan couldn’t touch it. No matter what happened they had to let him do his thing. And even after La-Monroe they had to keep quiet.

The size of the buyout does mean that they have to STFU on the plains with Gus for probably 2 years. Because this is Tim Cook money (to quote someone else on this thread)
