Link didn’t work when I tried to read this drivel. I imagine the author assumes that every coach will be fired until one of them manages to beat Alabama. Beating them is certainly a goal but it’s not how a program defines itself.

Richt wasn’t fired for his inability to beat Nick Saban … he was fired for his team’s failures in Jacksonville in 2014 and 2015 and for his team’s “victory” over GSU in 2015.

I didn’t mean it that way … My point is that everyone in Alabama thinks the reason for all of the turnover in head coaches is Nick Saban. Using CMR as the example, he’s one that wasn’t let go because of Saban. Other than Butch Jones and Les Miles, you could make the case that just about every other coaching change wasn’t the result of Saban. There was some other circumstance in play. A great example would be the Mississippi coaches. Hugh Freeze certainly wasn’t run out of Oxford due to his record vs. Saban. You could make the case the reason he survived the shenanigans around his program was his 2 wins vs. Alabama. Dan Mullen could have stayed in Starkville as long as he wanted regardless of whether he even beat Saban.

I made the same point a while back when there was a similar article published. The main point of the article was something like “The SEC has gone through X head coaches since Saban came to Alabama”. But it ignored things like Freeze and Petrino leaving due to off-the-field scandals, or Meyer “retiring” for “health reasons”, or Franklin leaving to take the Penn St job.

Winning keeps the jobs of most, most have not been keeping up with Saban….he has made it tougher.
It could also be argued, if Richt beat Saban’s team in ’12…there would have been a good possibility that we may have went on to win the MNC that year. If that happens, another good possibility he may still be here….it would have definitely been harder to let him go imo. The ass
kickings in ’15 & the “Blackout” game sure did not
help his reasons for staying.
Honestly, there probably was not just one reason Richt was let go…..but it certainly would have been tougher if we win it all in ’12.
If Saban never went to Bama…..my guess is, there would have been a few more still coaching. When you dominate recruiting the way he has, it certainly makes it tougher for the rest.

Do not underestimate how pissed off people that write the big checks were when he took the call from Miami’s AD after they fired Al Golden. That was during the week prepping for the Florida debacle. Then a few days later you had the Jeremy Pruitt incident. If those three indicents done’t happen within a week, Richt probably survives. The Georgia Southern game was just the final nail in the coffin for the big money donors.

Are you kidding me? Kirby is the toast of the state of Georgia right now, and barring some collapse of epic proportions on the field or institutional scandal off it, he’s going to be in Athens a hell of a lot longer than Little Nicky is on the Alabama sideline. Auburn has about 49,000,000 reasons they can’t fire Gus unless they are willing to put their athletic department in serious financial position.
This looks like another puff piece by a Bammer media member to attempt to take the edge off the long-term prospects post-Saban. The reality is that today’s whispers about Nick Saban will become tomorrow’s open conversation about his long-term commitment. It happened to Hayes, Bryant, Schembechler, Dooley, Paterno, Bowden, and Spurrier to name a few. It will happen to Saban … it’s just a matter of whether he allows his legacy to be tarnished as the talent drop-off happens or whether he decides to go out on top.

Depends on perspective. MSU could not provide the resources whether it be whatever combination salaries, overall infrastructure or recruiting base to keep Mullen. UGA may or may not have enough to keep Kirby in Athens if/when Saban retires. The UGA Way is changing but there are programs who are more willing to give everything to football.

I really don’t understand this concern that Kirby Smart is going to leave his alma mater – where he would be widely admired and handsomely compensated – to take the Alabama job.

Seriously, Kirbs is making almost 5 bills this year now, right? In 3 or 4 years, it will probably be in the $6-7 range. Does anyone really think he would leave Georgia to go to Bama for another bill or two??? Do you really think the Bammer folk would go to 8 figures to get him (which is what it should take in my opinion if everything stays on track!)?

It certainly looks like it right now. I’m trying not to count chickens, but it’s hard to see Georgia not managing one within the next few years. They should have done it last year with a little less talent than they should have by 2019.

Kirby isn’t leaving Athens for Tuscaloosa. I may eventually be wrong about that, but I stand by what I said above. Barring a collapse of some kind, Kirby is going to be in Athens long after Saban decides to retire to Lake Burton.

This seems like yet another AL type rant about how Nick is God and he will never die. Methinks they doth protesteth too much. They sound worried. It is as if they write these articles to make themselves feel better..

Not if but when Saban wins another Natty he will officially have more than any CFB Head Coach in history. I know he is driven to compete but that milestone has to at least be in the back of his mind. What then?
I think he will just keep going. He will coach til the wheels come off. I think at least another 5 years.

I’ll take the bait. First define job security. Then,Outside of Saban, see in how many are coaching in 5 years at the same school. Then look at who’s gone and why. My definition is “ have a couple of bad years and they still grant you an extension and don’t “throw the AD’s undying support” at them”. That isn’t happening anywhere in the SEC but perhaps Vanderbilt. Too much money involved for job security. That’s why Sexton negotiates the big buyouts, Kirby included.

smug and Bama fan go hand in hand. When I tell them, I have no interest in Bama, they say, “oh Auburn”. Another no, and then they look really confused when one says UGA, UDub, and Stanford. They do not really know any thing outside the Alabama borders.
