From the Department of Shocking, if True comes this news:
So much for a bowl game at Wrigley Field.
Sources told the Tribune on Thursday that the game is off, at least for now.
The breakdown in negotiations occurred because Cubs officials wanted a premier spot in the Big Ten bowl lineup — the ability to land the league’s No. 3 or No. 4 team. When Big Ten officials queried schools, the response was that they’d prefer a warm-weather destination. [Emphasis added.]
I know, I know. Whodathunkit?
Just looked up the site of the 2019 National Championship game. It’s at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, CA where the 49ers play. That could potentially be kind of nasty in early January.

Bay area is quite pleasant that time of year.

October is the dicey weather time, no ?

Early October is summer in SF. It’s also (not coincidentally) Fleet Week.

It’s really confounding, but it’s actually Summer that’s the sketchiest time for weather in SF.

Candlestick was always a terrible weather site, but that was because it was right by the bay. This stadium is inland if I remember correctly.

It’s in Santa Clara to the South across the bay. Not on the island.

Last time I was in the area in January all the azaleas were blooming. It was just as nice as a trip I took once in July. Not sure they get ‘bad’ weather – as most folks define ‘bad’.

Good news, I know how much the SEC and Bog 10 like to play one another in bowls….I could see our luck now…

I’m counting on the days of getting shitty bowl bids/match ups as gone for the foreseeable future.

If the money is right the Big10 will change its tune and happily send its number 3 team to Chicago.

Yeah in December in Chicago the average high is in the mid 30 and the average low in the mid 20s? Like playing on Concrete. but you know Wrigley…….

I’m going to reserve judgement. I mean, they still choose to live there.

What really grinds my gears is when a northerner claims “you guys down south are too soft to endure our winters, you’d never make it”.

I would never make it.

Yeah man. I’ll never forget my buddy Flock. “You guys don’t know cold. I’m from Wiscoooonsin. It doesn’t get cold down here.” January ’85. Ft Benning. We’re out in the woods. -6 degrees. Who’s the biggest sniveler? Flock. “We don’t go outside when it’s this cold in Wiscoooonsin.”

And they keep buildings etc hotter than hell in the winter too..

What grinds my gears is the sum bitches keep coming down here and telling us how we’re doing “this or that” wrong. In yank’s world there is a whole lot of ” this or that” the south is doing wrong but if “this or that” was so great up north of the Mason Dixon line why are they down here ? . I’m withholding/reserving my judgement too but I really want Chicago to stay in Chicago/ South Bend ……great place to visit don’t want to live there.
Just before I hit send I realized the headline is just click bait……of course they’re idiots. The senator is trying to start an argument….I vote that they are idiots…all of em …even my family members who are Yankees are idiots……crap even the smart ones are idiots and I don’t want anyone to try and convince me otherwise. It messes with my own version of reality…..Yankees are idiots and I don’t need anyone screwing with my reality….I reject your reality Senator and substitute my own it its place….Northerners are idiots even when they occasionally get it right ,because a bowl game in Wrigley would be an abomination, but getting that right is just a blind hog finding an acorn.
I do not listen to any sentence that begins ,”Well in New York we……” just don’t listen after that because I don’t give a F*** what they do in New York. I feel better now thank you

As someone who lives in the D.C. area, which certainly isn’t as bad as Chicago or NYC winters but is colder than north Georgia, IMO summers in the deep South is far tougher than winters here in the mid-Atlantic.

This was always a dumb idea. Football at Wrigley as a concept is an abomination.

You are aware the bears played there for over 50 years?

But they don’t now…I’ve yet to see a football field that works in a dedicated baseball park.

Football at Fulton County Stadium sucked. Multipurpose stadiums are awful for football.

Agreed. There are plenty of actual football stadiums in this country, I don’t know why anyone just up and decided we should try cramming football-sized fields into baseball diamonds.

It was a heresy then, too. Wrigley Field is a cathedral of baseball history. Playing a football game within the friendly confines is not only aesthetically terrible, it’s slanderous.

BTW – Wrigley opened in 1914, before football was even a speck in Vince Lombardi’s eye.

So the Big Ten schools themselves don’t even want to be up there… yet, they’re surprised when they can’t recruit the best athletes to come suffer through that mess?

I am always somewhat surprised when a southern athlete chooses to go up there to play. I used to hate playing football when the weather was in the thirties back in the day.

I could see that game as at best the 5th choice before Nashville, NYC, San Fran, Detroit and DFW; but probably after NYC given the programming needs.

MLB called and said hold on. To solve declining ratings and attendance problems they are expanding the playoffs to 28 teams and pushing the World Series to the week between Christmas and New Years. Move is designed to make regular season of 162 games worth more.

When Illinois played Northwestern at Wrigley a few years back they didn’t measure the field properly and, because of the wall, they changed directions every possession so the offenses went to the correct size end zone.
