The real screw-up was changing to the running QB (Bauta) without putting in an offense for a running QB, even though they had 2 weeks to do it like Irvin Meyers did years earlier. If you are going to make a change like that don’t keep the same passing offense and then put in the worst passer on the team. Duh. That’s one of the reasons CMR isn’t in Athens any more.

Michel sprained his wrist (IIRC) in the first series running the wildcat, Chubb was out, and Keith Marshall wasn’t risking any injuries that season. I’ve always said I thought the game plan heavily involved Michel running the wildcat, when he went down, Bauta was all we had.

Did you not read where he said he wasn’t a dual threat? It’s one thing to run it in high school. Quite another to run in the SEC.

Seriously, we panicked, put him in with zero plans to play to his strengths, lost the game and then punished HIM by exile to the scout team.

Good to see Bauta involved in football. If nothing else, he has a cool story to tell the rest of his life.

I met him several times while he was at UGA. He was a very nice polite young man. He was good to my son, too. I wish things had worked out better for him. He deserved it.

Typically the conventional wisdom on this is just wrong.
Either Faton was never worth the scholarship and had no chance to succeed OR he choked.
Rewatch the game. There are times he had time and room and could have tucked and ran and didn’t. Fear? Wanted to prove he could throw drys? Who knows?
There are times when they ran zone reads and Faton got ate up one on one vs. a guy who outweighed him by 50 (or more) pounds. Shouldn’t happen to a supposed “athletic” qb. If he can’t beat a 280lb DE with his feet, what’s the game plan for this guy? I know one of you couch coordinators has the perfect “qb can’t run or throw package.”
They recorded the game. You can watch it. The idea that they gave him Aaron murray’s game plan is wrong. They gave him a a chance and he crashed and burned.
Either he couldn’t, and the coaches should have known that, or he wouldn’t when he got the chance.
Given how atrocious Greyson had played and played later, I have a hard time criticizing benching him. I just don’t know how inept (or not) Faton looked in practice.

Badmouth Greyson Lambert all you want but Georgia was 11-2 in the games he started and finished. Not to mention he owns the NCAA single game completion record. THe problem on O that year wasn’t Lambert as we learned the next year–it was the OL.

So he was unjustifiably pulled and replaced as starter by three different coaching staffs at two different schools?

Oh, I never said unjustifiably. He got beaten out at Georgia by by Eason, a superior player with tremendous upside who will likely be a high draft pick in the NFL and play pro ball. I don’t know as much about Virginia. Supposedly he transferred after he graduated early after being the starter on a losing team because Mike London told him he would never play there again. But Grayson Lambert played as well as many other QBs we have had at Georgia who people call DGDs. He doesn’t deserve being badmouthed.

Neither does greg Talley. But he was terrible. As was Brian Smith. As was Preston Jones. As was Quincy Carter. As was joe T3.
Why does “deserve” come into it?
Some kids can play and some can’t. It’s ok. They know.

Greyson was a head-scratcher to me. Sometimes he’d look really good and others he just wouldn’t (couldn’t?) get the ball out on-time and on-target. If I remember right, he was terrible in the first half of the 2015 Tennessee game and then much better in the 2nd half. Even had a chance to win it if not for a couple of dropped passes late.

Greg Talley wasn’t “terrible.” He just was beaten out by Eric Zeier, who held all the Georgia passing records by the time he was done. And Quincy Carter? He payed 5 or more years in the NFL part of the time as a starter

Of those you’re right that Q had the best career (and the best potential) but he also had the worst lows. There were times he was just awful. I’m not going to go back and look bc it would make me ill but I seem to recall Quincy had something like 7 TO’s in the second half vs. USC and UF one year.
As for Talley I guess for you winning percentage is only relevant when it’s good?

They think this is the best and deepest the Gators have ever had.
That is what I and a few others thought too.
How will Tucker defend the Gator running attack?
It could be very rough afternoon in JAX.
Lot is said of Grantham’s Gator defense.
Let’s us think back how the Old Ball Coach attacked Grantham one year as the Dawg DC.
But Chaney aint no Spurrier by any means.
