It’s a simple one. As a Georgia fan, what’s the worst month of football you’ve experienced?
For me — and I don’t think it’s recency bias — it’s got to be October, 2015.
Even the one win in that dreary stretch was marked by incredibly poor football play (by both teams). And the rest? Ugh. At least there was a bye week.
How ’bout you? Got something worse to share with the class? Go on, get it out of your system. It’ll be cathartic.

Getting your @$$ kicked by Spurrier in his first year in Hogtown (and realizing there’s a new sheriff in town), by Auburn, by Fech at home, and in my only visit to Clempson … there has been no stretch of football from the beginning of October to the end of the season worse in my lifetime.
We sucked. The emptying cupboard of Coach Dooley and Jan Kemp was finally bare (Dooley got out while the getting was good). Goff looked absolutely clueless and really was never off the hot seat after 1990. It was embarrassing. We were lucky we didn’t finish 1-10.

We won 3 games by a total of 6 points against Southern Miss (w/Brett Favre), Bama (Chuck Carswell saved our fanny), and East Carolina. Ugh.

And Southern Miss should have beaten us too. Favre seemed to throw for a thousand miles, but it was a low scoring game. He drove them down for the game winning field goal, but they had a straight on kicker that hit the goalpost flush about halfway up as time expired. You could actually hear the clang because the whole stadium was holding its collective breath.

Come on man, we beat Bama AND Brett Farve that year!! I took my first trip the NOLA and Baton Rouge for the opener. It wasn’t all bad.
Not stopping Tech’s run at home sucked to be sure.

The only thing redeeming about that year was in Jacksonville. We’re in the parking lot next to a some Georgia people in a can from Valdosta. The Handbags are crowing about how badly they were going to beat us. The guy said to us, “I’ll shut them up.” He went in his van and popped Munson’s call of “Run, Lindsay!” and turned it up to 11. Every Handbag in earshot went quiet. One of them walked over after the guy went back to his music at a normal volume and just said, “Can’t you guys let us have fun one time?” and walked away.

The year before was when the two top qbs for UF were suspended for sports gambling the week of the game. In an ironic twist it is my understanding that those bets were placed with students at UGA.
Anyway, some florida fans parked next to us and were engaged with a portion of my party discussing who UF would start at QB.
Once the identity was established, Donald Douglas as I recall, I asked whether they thought he had a bet on the outcome of the game.
Sadly, these UF fans chose to end their interaction with us at that point in time.

That was my first. 4-7 was not a good way to get introduced to the glory of Georgia football.
The only redeeming feature from that season was beating Bama on the halfback pass for the winning 2 point conversion.

Even though I lived through the Goff years, which had some terrible months, I’ll have to agree with your choice Senator. The Failed Faton experiment with Florida made that the worst month ever to me. Even if the loss to Bama had not been so embarrasing, the loss to the Gators would have been enough.

It was made worse by the fact that I was certain the night before the game sitting at my friend’s house on St. Simon’s, we all knew that we were going to get our asses kicked as soon as we heard about the Faton Bauta move. Was there a possibility that things would be different and he could move the offense with his legs? Sure. But by the second drive when we saw that Bauta was just running the exact same offense it was clear it was going to be a bad day, and I think we all knew at that point Richt was done at Georgia and that made it feel even worse. I really loved Richt and wanted to see him win titles at Georgia. Obviously, I’m happy now with the way it all worked out, but yeah… that month was truly awful.

Its interesting bc i think more people than would admit it knew Richt was in trouble, but then when it happened they were crazy about it. I say that to say this:
I was ready to move on but felt the handling of Rick’s firing was absolutely abysmal. So I really wonder if a more graceful exit would have helped the transition or if the same people would have been just as upset. Because that 4 game stretch that you posted along with trying to lose to Missouri in a field goal off was absolutely horrible for me. Like I’m done with this team and football horrible.

LOL. And somehow we still won 10 games. I think we are the only SEC team to ever have won 10 games and still finish out of the Top 25. And, we were rightfully excluded.

Yeah, 2008 and 2009 were like one continuous humiliation, but 2009 was Brandon Spikes trying to gouge out Ealey’s eyes and then choosing to discipline himself because Meyer wasn’t interested.

Ugh- I attended every one of those games, but learned out on the way back from Knoxville that I had not been in the arena.
Mullen has not suffered nearly enough for that Starkville atrocity. He chest-bumped his coaches right in front of me and my retinas are stiff in flames.

Yep, my first fall in Athens transferring in as a junior. However, beating LSU 21-14 was one of my first magical moments in Sanford Stadium. Great atmosphere and had a blast partying in the student section with the band long after the game.

2015 was like 1995 for me. Necessary pain to facilitate the gain.

and 1995 started with such promise. Its probably masochistic on my part but 1995 remains as one of my favorite seasons as a Georgia fan. (I exclude the game whose name cannot be mentioned in that assessment, fwiw). We weren’t very good and damn unlucky, but the guys who survived played their asses off. At the end of the day, that’s more important to me than a W. You can’t always be good or healthy, but you can always play like you care. Those guys did.
And we beat Clemson at Clemson with a freshman back that weighed 160 lbs who had 190 on 49 carries. We also beat tech on a last second fg, after converting 8 3rd downs in a row (I think) to get to bowl eligibility.

Derek…and the win at home over South Carolina that year was glorious. Robert Edwards went nuts that day with something like 5 touchdowns overall.

It was EXACTLY five TDs, all in the second half. 4 rushing and 1 catch. Hines had an awesome peel back block on the passing TD that would have led to an ejection today. (BTW: Kirby had three sacks of Taneyhill that day).
Then 47 went to Knoxville and had 154 yards on 12 carries and 2 TDs and then breaks his foot.
No one, Walker included, had a better 3.5 quarters as a UGA RB than Edwards had from the second half of the USC game until he went out at UT. The guy could not be tackled or caught.
He had 7 TDs over that time which was about a TD every 4 times he touched it and averaged over 12 yards a touch. Never seen anything like it and then it was over.

That peel back block by Hines is still one of my favorite plays I ever witnessed in Sanford Stadium…and where Ward really announced out loud to the world that he wasnt a finesse receiver. Played hard nosed like alot of the kids from Forest Park…

I’ve never felt more crushed (in relation to a sporting event) than in the seconds, minutes, hours, days and weeks following the 2012 SECCG loss.
I was CERTAIN we were the better team and would win that game all the way up to the end. So, yeah, it’d have to be December 2012, even though we only played one game the whole month.

That was my freshman year. It started so gloriously… coming off the 10-9 Cotton Bowl win, 2nd game of the season was the Kevin Butler 60+ yard winner over Clemson. My first home game as a student, I’m thinking a lot of games will be that glorious.
Then we go to Williams-Brice, I watch us lose in my first road game, and then the aforementioned November losses to Fla, Auburn, and GTU. It’s a bad year when you lose to those 4.

First of all, thank you Senator for continuing to post during these strange days. We are all very, very appreciative. Re the question: The entire post-Dooley reign with Goff was very tough. For me, at the time, it was especially the shock of it. I was in my teens and seeing my Dawgs emblazoned in my existence as super RBU, winning a title, always competing, etc. decimated to what we saw under Goff was simply…shocking…every…month. October 2015 is a close second, followed by the last month of 2015. I could not believe that Richt’s vaunted offenses and creative offenses had fallen so much. Blame whoever – Richt, Schottt, etc. – it seemed like one day Murray was leading us to massive 40 point games during a few year stretch, etc. and then….what was the Missouri game. When did we need a grad transfer as QB? Where was the adjustments? Dude, where’s my football team. The UF game even more baffling.

That 10-2 team should have been 12-0. That 9-3 team was fun to watch with EZ as a freshman (although Bama shut us down and Florida downright beat us down). I believe the ’91 Cocktail Party was the one where the OBS made his comment about recruiting vs. playing.

Easy Mayor. I never used the term, ‘humiliating.’ My point was when you are 7 and your team wins the national title you think your team will always win most, if not all, of the games it plays. When Goff arrived – yeah, he had some good seasons and super players – we lost games I never thought were possible and the ‘confidence’ that I had in The Dawgs prior waned and nothing seemed as for sure as it did when I was a boy. In other words, every month was a not-for-sure win package as I envisioned. I reckon I should have saved my reply for a post on UGA Football, formative psychology and the importance of the sports in the post-modern era…

My Mom has a picture of my cousin and I in 1967 Cotton Bowl jerseys (Kick ass jammies!) that we got when Uncle Cowdog (played for Vince) took us to the athletic facility for a tour. I’m guessing it was 72 as he was home from Vietnam and we would have been 5ish. I’ve still got mine, it’s in a frame with a couple of autographs from guys that were members of that team. If my children don’t claim it they will bury me with it.
I’ve been a Georgia fan my entire life and plan to exit this realm as one come what may.

Mark, Ray inherited a program that was falling into disrepair. The Kemp effect and Dooley’s recruiting at the end of his career hollowed out the talent level of the program. 1990 was the result of that. One thing, Goff did was upgrade recruiting by convincing Hearst, Hastings & Zeier to come to Athens leading to the reasonably successful seasons of ’91-’92. He couldn’t maintain it, and then injuries decimated his “significant improvement” team in ’95.

Worst month of football? I nominate November 1969, my freshman year.
We were coming off an SEC Championship in 1968. Heading into November 1969, we were 5-1 with 3 defensive shutouts and a #11 national ranking. Then:
Tennessee 17 UGA 3 in Athens
UGA 13 Florida 13 Gainesville
Auburn 16 UGA 3 Athens
Tech 6 UGA 0 Atlanta
Followed that up with a 45-6 whooping by Nebraska in the Sun Bowl. Ugh.

Also my freshman year. Went to a game in the heat wearing a coat and tie and learned from that experience. Current wife (girlfriend at the time) wore a nice dress and got coke and bourbon spilled all over her. And then the games. Not a good start.

Lot’s of miserable times listed above. Many of them bring back sickening feelings. Sometimes the opposing coach and his attitude added to the sting. You could probably list the coaches I’m referring to.
But to add to the lists…
I don’t remember if it was all in the same month, but stacking loses in 2010 to, the cocks, R-Kansas, MsSt and a B12-now-PAC10 weakling was a stinging insult.
I don’t remember exact month or year but the Back to back losses to powerhouses Mizzu and Vandy was a major low for me.

AJ Green was suspended. Lattimore ran it down our throats for 4 quarters in Week 2. Mallett through a last second TD right into my face hole (I used to have season tickets in the end zone above the visiting team entrance). Loss at Miss St. Loss at Colorado even with AJ Green returning.
Plus my father died of massive heart attack in the early afternoon on the Sat of the Miss St. game which I didn’t find out about until the evening because I was camping in a remote part of WNC.

I agree with the Senator. I may be biased though, since I was there for the Bama game. And I’m sure being out there in the rain didn’t do me any favors as I brought a cold with me back to Maryland as my only souvenir.
But as a runner-up, may I present to you October 2013:
Pyrrhic victory against Tennessee in Kneeland, resulting in numerous injuries which contributed to the loss to Missouri in Athens the following week. Then capping it off by (if memory serves right) getting screwed on a targeting call that helped Vandy beat us.

That LSU win before the Kneeland disaster felt like such a huge victory at the time; Aaron Murray finally beat a top 10 team and did it with style and it seemed like our ceiling was very high. Instead of being one of those “what if” seasons, though, it has been remembered as a cautionary tale of under-signing recruiting classes.

October 2009 was my first thought, but I also submit October/November 2006. Tennessee putting up 51 in Sanford, homecoming loss to Vandy, beating MSU by 3, loss to UF, loss at UK. And that stretch was preceded by Joe Cox leading the 4th quarter comeback against Colorado, and a 14-9 win at Ole Miss. That was a tough almost 2 month stretch. And then we beat #5 Auburn, ranked Tech, and ranked VT to close the year.

I actually thought 2009 was Richts best coaching job. That team had inferior talent (with the exception of AJGreen) and had an awful start. A lot of teams would have folded and finished the year with a losing record. But CMR and the staff held that team together and ended up beating ranked teams down the stretch to pull out an 8-5 record. That was the year of the phantom celebration call against AJ that opened the door to a comeback by LSU in the last 2 minutes to steal the game. Marc Curles (GT grad) was the ref who called the penalty at least 30 seconds after the TD was scored without ever throwing a flag. I’ve always thought that game was fixed. Still do.Curles and his crew were suspended for a game after more shenanigans in favor or FU the following week.

Senator nailed it here. I was a student at the time and I have to say my two worst Georgia football memories are walking home soaking wet from the Alabama beatdown and sitting through that Missouri “win”. Florida couldn’t hurt me after those…

I am honestly torn on this one. October 2009 was a dreadful month of football and the month that I lost all hope and faith in Richt…LSU 20-13 L, UT 45-19 L, Vandy 34-10 W, Florida 41-17 L. The 4 week stretch of Sept 21 to Oct 19 2019 was painful and has left a sting that will not go away. I disliked the 2019 offense and coaching staff more than any single unit in the history of Georgia football. 2009 and 2019 both drove me to distance myself from college football.

Jeez Skeptic! The 2019 team finished 12-2! Won the SEC East! Won the Sugar Bowl! Its only losses were in double OT when our all world kicker missed what should have been the game winning FG and to the team that won the national championship! You need to change your name to Septic Dawg man.

I’m a little bit younger of a fan but that stretch in September 2010 starting with a loss to South Carolina, loss to Ark, loss to Miss St and ending with a loss to COLORADO was pretty brutal. I still feel like the loss to Colorado was one of the lowest points of the Richt era. That was also when AJ was suspended and came back and made that amazing catch in the Colorado game but it was all for nothing.

The four game stretch in 2010 was pretty much the worst for me. All of 2015 felt like a slog after that South Carolina game and I still believe Will Leitch best summarized that Alabama experience for us that were in the stands.

In a beat down against a team that doesn’t deserve to be there and leacing is the only way to express that like Tech in 2018 or Hawaii in the Sugar Bowl? That’s acceptable.
Never in a loss.

The only time I can ever remember leaving early in a loss…. was sometime not too deep into the 3rd quarter against FU in 2015. Sure there are more painful memories of being a Dawg fan, but I can’t ever remember feeling more apathy toward the program or its direction than I did that afternoon in Jacksonville.

If a buddy of mine and I followed that advice in 1995, he and I would have had to walk back to Atlanta after the Florida game in Athens. My wife and his girlfriend (to become his wife) told us at halftime they were heading home, and if our drunk @$$3$ (needed to be desensitized to what was coming) wanted a ride home, we would come along with them. We quietly left.
Every game I’ve ever left really early was a total embarrassment (multiple Florida games in the 90s, Auburn 99, Bama 08, Bama 15). I don’t boo anyone except the opposing team and the crooked SEC officials.

The exact same thing happened to me and my brother during the South Carolina game, in – I think – 2006. We stayed to finish the game. And we had to find alternate transportation home. Which we could only arrange the following day, of course. Incidentally, we ran into Zac Mettenberger at a bar after the game.

Women should be fully vetted and aware of and agreeable to a few things prior to entry into a Georgia game:
1) i will embarrass you (and myself at times) with my conduct
2) i will be far drunker than any human should
3) we don’t leave early. Especially if we’re losing.
These terms are non-negotiable.

October 2006 wins it for me. UT hangs half a hundred on us at home, Vandy beats us AT HOME, we squeeze past a very, VERY bad Mississippi State team AT HOME, and then go to Jacksonville and crap the bed. Follow that up the next week with the loss to Kentucky, and, yeah.

That one was mine. We’d at least thought we were on the cusp of greatness in 2002, 2003, and 2004. We got over the hump and won the SEC again in 2005. Then that 5-week stretch happened and it looked like maybe the problems we saw in the Sugar Bowl against WV might have been fatal.
In hindsight it was a blip as we were right back in the thick in 2007. Moreover, we whipped #6 Auburn at home right after that Kentucky loss. But that’s probably the most despondent I ever got about Georgia football since I got to campus in 2000.

Senator, I must agree. That “dreary stretch” precipitated a span of pessimism that wasn’t fully relieved until the Rose Bowl victory. After CMR was fired for cause I envisioned the Dawgs going down the same road as those Hee Haw refugees in trash orange. With the exception of some O issues it’s been mostly a fun trip since Kirby’s second season.

September of 1993, mainly because it was massively huge let down after the 1992 campaign, and because I was a Redcoat through all of it. Honestly I’d say the entirety of 1993 for me. Only highlights (if you can call it that) was the rainy WLOCP where we thought we had come within one but Spurrier had called a timeout and then the massive brawl near the end of the Tech game.

The 2015 season has to be the most unsatisfying 10–win campaign in the history of college football. Other than helping to send Spurrier to a mid-season retirement, nothing about that season was fun.

I am going with the opening of the 1996 season under Donnan. I still remember the feeling I had when the team ran onto the field for the first game with some cheesy entrance and those horrid black stripes on the helmets. The crowd sat there in almost near silence thinking, “what in the hell is this?” Then, we were treated to a loss to Southern Miss to begin the Donnan era.
That season actually had a pretty good ending with the thrilling four OT win against Auburn and beating Tech but, watching the struggle to beat Texas Tech and losing to South Carolina followed by losing again to the Vols gave little hope for the rest of the season. I think we squeezed in a win over Miss. State in there but still, we looked terrible. I’m not just talking about those awful black stripes Donnan added to the uniform either.

What was he thinking?!?! Marshall must have played extremely slow football players for those things to even be in his playbook.
Eventually I really liked Donnan’s multiple offense. Not getting a DC soon enough and going all in on Quincy sunk him.
Who knows what happens with Greene at Qb if Donnan doesn’t decide to go off on the call in show caller before he ever took a snap?

Doesn’t compare to 2015 1-3, but September of 08 coming in with the #1 ranking only to slowly drop with a few lackluster wins and finally getting our dreams dashed by Bama at home with Saban’s first statement win at Bama wasn’t great.
