“The luxury of time”

Bill Hancock ain’t worried about playoff expansion.

“We have time, because if the event is going to change before the end of the term, the end of the 12 years, we have three or four months,” Hancock said. “If it’s going to change in Year 13, then we have a couple of years.”

The 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick met for about two hours in a hotel conference room near the Big Ten headquarters, and the CFP’s board of managers, which is comprised of the 11 presidents and chancellors who have the power to change the playoff, joined them via video conference for the second half of the meeting.

For once, he’s probably right.  There’s simply too much money in a 12-team format for them to walk away, as much as I wish they would.

At least it sounds like there’s some bad news for Mickey.

… They also discussed media rights, but Hancock said ESPN television executives were not a part of Tuesday’s discussions.

“The format will be done before television,” Hancock said.

If the playoff format were to change before then, ESPN would have first rights to any new games. If college football’s power brokers are determined to take the playoff to multiple media entities as a way of maximizing revenue, it would need to wait until after 2025 or work out an arrangement with ESPN.

“In last week’s meeting, it became clear for the first time that all 11 members of the management committee now believe we have to have multiple distributors of our postseason content,” one source with knowledge of the discussions said.

My only question is what happens if (when?) ESPN outbids everyone else at the table for the whole enchilada.  Would these people really take less money just to keep someone like Fox in play?  Color me skeptical.

I have no idea how much networks make/pay for NFL games but just for kick, what if CBS dropped NFL, bought the SECN, kept their 3:30 game of the week and buys the new playoff? I know it’s radical but when texlahoma becomes reality doesn’t the SEC get to renegotiate media rights? Just a thought.

  3. In 5 years we may have the CFP presented by Amazon. It would appear Mickey blew their shot at the whole thing by meddling.

Exhausted from all of this. Let me be Nostradamus. Next year:

12 teams – and schools will bitch.

16 teams – two years later – and schools will bitch.

24 teams – two years later – and schools will bitch.

    But they will stop there.

At some point, the SEC will have a choice – cut the schedule by a game or the SEC Championship game.

If you have a problem with NIL – then you should have a problem with these kids having to play almost as many games as the NFL (who do not go to school on top of football).

I’ll always love CFB and especially The Dawgs – but they are slowly ruining this sport – pretty soon the season will mean just as little as it does for the NBA, NHL and NFL. “everybody playing in the playoffs”

If we ever go to 24 I think that’s the breaking point for me. I’ll stop watching. Haven’t watched the NFL in years. I like golf. And curling. Anybody televise curling outside of the Olympics?

I disagree. They are not slowly ruining this sport. They are in a full sprint to destroy this sport. A four team playoff is bad enough. 8-12-16 will be ridiculous and I’ll suddenly have a lot more free time on the weekends.

Twenty-five years ago I wouldn’t have believed that in 2021 I wouldn’t watch or listen to even one regular season Braves game. So yeah, Russ, I’ll find something else to do.

For years we had four season tickets right behind home plate. We watched Maddox, Glavine, and Smoltz work their magic. It was a LOT of fun. Today, although I live near the park I have no idea if the Braves are even any good. We usually only attend if someone else invites us. Things change.

Suppose there was a 16 team tourney and the seniors on 15 and 16 said, “Bullshit”, and decided they were sitting it out?
Why should they risk embarrassment and possibly injury to increase Micky’s coffers?
I wouldn’t be surprised. Meaningless bowl game and all that.

Especially if the 16 seed was somebody normally up at the top who had a down year. You think 16 seed Ohio state is having no opt-outs ?

if CBS wants in on the CFP or even NBC, then let’s talk. But please, please, please keep FOX away from the playoff. I hate, hate, hate FOX’s college football broadcast from start to finish. I hated when they had the BCS. I’d hate for them to have any piece of this playoff. This isn’t the NFL. Keep them out of it and keep Gus Johnson and his screaming orgasm over a first quarter pass completion as far away from the national title booth as possible.

aaaathis is why I hope Notre Dame loses every game they play other than tech. NTM the ND media hype train has already started for this season.

Georgia-Arkansas is basically a playoff game.

In a 16 team world, it sort of affects seeding.
