Alabama is hiring Liberty linebackers coach Robert Bala as its new inside linebackers coach, program sources confirmed to The Athletic on Saturday…
Bala, who came to Liberty after being the defensive coordinator at Southern Utah, had blown Hugh Freeze away in the interview process with his knowledge and demeanor. Bala obviously did something similar when he met with Saban earlier this week.
So, this guy blew Freeze away so strongly… that Freeze didn’t bring him to Auburn, but Saban’s grabbing him now? I know he’s the GOAT and all, but that seems like I’m missing something.

Bala is making a big jump. In 2022, he was a defensive analyst for Liberty. A year later, he is set to become the new inside linebackers coach for Nick Saban at Alabama. Bala helped work with Liberty’s safeties in 2022, when the Flames more than doubled their turnovers gained to 24 and picked off 18 passes. He had been promoted to linebackers coach by the Flames for the 2023 season before Saban came calling.

It wasn’t very long ago that long-time assistant Cochran wanted to switch to a coaching position, and Saban was against it. Now he’s okay with making an analyst his LB coach, not to mention a 30 year old his OC. Time will tell whether there’s genius with these hires or he’s desperately grasping for something that might work.

Kiffin was a HC at two different power 5 schools before doing his rehab stint at Bama. I fail to see the connection between the Kiffin situation and the recent hires at bama.
