My final Mumme Poll ballot

Without any further ado, here goes:

Number One

  • Utah

Next Four

  • Florida
  • Oklahoma
  • Southern California
  • Texas

Next Seven

  • Alabama
  • Georgia
  • Mississippi
  • Ohio State
  • Penn State
  • TCU
  • Texas Tech

*******************************************************************

COMMENTS:

  • The tough calls were at number five and numbers eleven and twelve.
  • I gave the nod at five – barely – to Oklahoma, based on what I think was a slightly tougher schedule than the one Alabama played, but really, I would have been more comfortable with a 1-3-8 format to this ballot.
  • I weighed five teams for the last two slots and wound up with Ohio State and Georgia, with some reservations.  In the end, Boise State’s results against that schedule weren’t strong enough for me.  Oregon lost to Boise.  And Oregon State lost to Oregon.

Sorta surprised at this, considering you wanted to go ahead and assume the BCS got it right with one and two matchup initially. Would your heart just not allow you to put the GPOOE’s team at no. 1?

I don’t see how anyone who justfied Tebow last year (and I would’ve voted for him last year) can justify voting for him this year. Harrel’s team had just as good a record and better stats and Bradford the same, against a schedule just as tough.

Tebow’s stats were great, but not Heisman great when compared to those two and Harrell didn’t even get invited to NY. A travesty IMO.

Those who felt Tebow should’ve won both years are wanting their cake and eat it too. They want to vote for him one year because his stats were legendary and the other because of his leadership on a NC contender. Bradford did both in one year. He deserved it.

Agree with the Senator here on Tebow – IMO he deserved it more this year than last year.

    Truth.

Your ballot is spot on Senator.

I’m ok with the line of thought that Tebow deserved it this year but not last year. I don’t agree, but I can understand the reasoning. I don’t get the outcry that he deserved it both years though. That’s my point.

Right… I’m sure that if it had been UGA winning the BCS title game with one loss, you would still be ranking Utah at number one. Very classy, Bluto.

No worries, Bluto – I’m not offended. Just amused at your obvious hypocrisy.

  13. Senator, I really struggled with this vote. It seems the Gators up above are quite perturbed with your voting Utah #1. I too voted Utah #1, but in the end came to the conclusion that I didn’t really believe they were the only deserving of the #1 ranking. The whole process of actually having to vote a team #1 has turned me cold to the whole idea of rankings. Sure, it’s nice to hear that your team is thought of highly by sportswriters and coaches, but it’s nearly impossible to argue who’s the best. I came to the conclusion that Florida, Texas, and Utah all deserve to be #1. I’m sure I’ll get bashed by the Florida fans because I put Utah #1, but I challenge them to present an infallible argument as to why Utah shouldn’t be #1. And please don’t come at me with the “We hold the crystal football” or “ESSS EEE CEEEE Speed” arguments. I will ignore you and not debate the merits of who should be #1.

Nice work, Bluto. You found a Gator fan who feels sorry for Utah. That really proves you’re not a hypocrite.

  17. 1) 16 AP voters put Utah #1.

    2) At least one major Florida blogger puts Utah #1.

    3) Last year, a lot of Georgia fans agreed UGA didn’t deserve the shot. I was fine with the decision.

Your claims of hypocrisy are totally unfounded.

The thing is, its not Florida’s fault that Utah is the real champion. Maybe Florida would win if they played. But under the system we have, with the games that got played, Utah should be the champ.

I’m a Georgia fan and Tebow is not my hero. And I voted UF no. 1. Calm down silly Gator. Y’all won and this is a blog for goodness sakes. Geeze, the thought that Tebow wasn’t on a ballot when three other QBs in BCS conferences had the same record and as good or better stats pisses you guys off and now the fact that a Utah team with an undefeated record, pretty good strength of schedule and a more dominant defeat of Bama stole some votes somehow makes that Gator tail draw up. Must it be unanimous to mean something to you?

Anybody, Florida or Georgia fan, who believes that Utah has a better resume than Florida, or who believes Utah would be anything better than 10-2 in the SEC (and even that’s a stretch) is simply lying to themselves.

The argument, “But they’re undefeated and Florida had a loss” is beyond simplistic.

I would rank them #4 behind Florida, USC, and Texas. All of those teams had a better record than I believe Utah would have under similar circumstances.

I’ll say this, though. The argument can be about two different things. If you want to argue that Utah DESERVES a chance to keep playing, by all means I agree. Of course they do.

But under the system that is in place, “because they’re undefeated and everybody else has a loss” isn’t a good enough reason to just stick them at number one without looking at the entire picture more critically. That’s the part I thought was crazy.

As always, coming from a Gator, I still love your work.
