I check The State’s Joe Person’s blog each day to see what’s going on at South Carolina’s preseason practices.
Mixed in between his reports, I came across this post, which is one of the sadder things I’ve read in a while, on a number of levels. Sometimes it’s easy for kids to forget that there’s more to a college scholarship than a potential ticket to playing at the next level. It’s also true that sometimes schools push things too close to the envelope’s edge with their choices of recruits.
No snark intended here; all you can do is shake your head at the wasted opportunity. On both sides.

You are right, sad on a number of levels. I know my grammar is horrible but it will be interesting to see if/how long he remains academically eligible. I am actually wondering how he got past the 9th grade. Makes me proud we have our Jeff Owens and Rennie Curran.

makes you realize that colleges like UGA and USC arent just for the well-to-do kids of the atlanta suburbs. Truly heart-wrenching to think that a kid, ya a freaking adolescent, has to pin his entire hopes for life on football and the fans at these institutions. I know I take this sport seriously, but at the end of the day I always have my work or my girlfriend or my friends to turn to when we lose a game or the season ends. What does this kid have? Sounds like nothing to me, and my heart goes out to him for it. I hope he becomes the best player he can be so he pulls himself out of the rut he’s in, and I h sincerely hope that he takes this scholarship as an opportunity to do some good in the classroom. Babies killing babies. Thats all it is and its amazing that something as simple as football can give them a way out

That post was one of the saddest things I’ve read in along time on so many different levels. His English was horrible but his desperation was intense. I really hope that kid takes advantage of the opportunity being provided and stays out of trouble.
