Vanderbilt’s Black & Gold scrimmage sounds like something straight out of a bad ethnic joke I was told years ago.
I’m not sure exactly how long Bobby Johnson planned to extend the Black & Gold scrimmage on Saturday, but when Vanderbilt’s offense touched down in the end zone, he blew his whistle.
Problem is, it took roughly an hour and a half of scrimmaging before the Commodores offense finally crossed the goal line.
“We’ve got to do better on offense,” quarterback Larry Smith said. “We’ve got to keep up our end of the bargain.”
Even with the ball placed on the 20, the offense failed to score a touchdown on four straight series. There was just one first down during that sequence.
This from a team that averaged less than nine points per game in SEC play last year. Not good.
Polacks or Ginneys?

What tangible benefit does the SEC receive from having Vanderbilt as a member?

Athletically, their basketball programs (men & women) are above average. Academically, they’re the best school in the conference.

Vanderbilt had probably its best hoops season in decades this year….in a year when they lost to us (shoulda been swept) and got punked by Murray State in the first round of the NCAAs. You say “above average,” I say “definitively mediocre.”
As for the academics, the Dores aren’t carrying the conference by their lonesome. Yeah, we’ve got some real stinkers here (hi, Starkvegas), but it’s not like the entire conference is populated by community-college-level institutions.
So again. What is Vandy giving us? Because I could do without, easy.

Not every team in the conference can be a winner. We need losers who will take their share of the bowl money, send a team to get drilled and then go quietly. Would you really want Vandy to be replaced with Texas in the SEC East (not that it will happen)? Think about it. Baylor serves its purpose in the Big-12 the same way.

Vandy’s men’s basketball program had 10 more wins than UGA and made the NCAA tournament. They have been better than UGA and USC in the SEC East for several years. Their women’s program is nationally ranked most years.
And academically, I never said the entire conference was community colleges. But there’s no arguing that Vandy is the class of the conference in that category.
Vandy’s major weakness is football. If that’s all you care about, then I understand your position.

Above average in baseball too…at least recently.

It ain’t all about football.

Or maybe Vanderbilt should just pop a chubby and keep on the sunny side of life about its great defense

I don’t understand why they don’t try for the pure spread
What do they have to lose?

You need speed, which they lack. I think their best bet would be a triple option attack. You don’t need huge linemen to run block, and defenses can’t simply count on being better athletes than you are.

I can’t seem to sleep… I’ve had a few drinks tonight
so I was checking out comcast on demand laying here in bed ( I’m on my iPhone) and in the top picks they have a Soul Train section A bunch of good music. So guess what I’m watching right bow?
Yep… Billy Paul singing ” Me and Mrs. Jones” on a classic episode of Soul Train from 1972. I still feel guilty even though I did love that girl.
