A reader sent me this link to an article about Georgia’s offseason training program. Suffice to say, there’s a little more to it than this:
I don’t know if the staff is planning any changes to the program this coming summer, but this comment from Kyle Hobbs is worth noting:
For those individuals who believe that we should have maxed tested before starting the program it is important to note that the PREVIOUS SUMMERS numbers were all time PR’s for every athlete. Our training cycles are dictated by many factors that are outside of the Strength and Conditioning Coaches control. That is why it is stated that summer is our most productive training time in regards to maximal strength development. I would encourage others to track personal results of this program to provide a more in depth analysis of the long-term success of the program. We used it and saw great results in a short time frame; this would indicate even better results in a longer time frame.
We’ll see, come the fourth quarter against Boise State.

Not worried about BSU 4th qtr, inside interminable TV timeouts. The next week VS USC (can I still say that??) will be THE test.

The fourth quarter of the SEC Championship game would be more of an indication than anything else.

Once we know that the teams playing include one from Athens, we will already know. Winning the East is our first objective, winning the SEC is always the goal. Best of the best, it get no better than that.
I feel the East is obtainable this year, but we would be heavy underdogs to either LSU or Alabama. Not saying we couldn’t win any one game, but winning the East would be enough to satisfy me at this point. Of course my desire then would to be competitive in the Championship game, pull the upset, and win a BCS bowl game. That would make for a much more pleasant off season next year.

Given that LSU’s problems were less talent and more coaching (and even LSU fans aren’t super impressed with Krapthorpe at OC) I think if we made it to Atlanta, we could take ’em.
Bama, on the other hand, might be epically good given the number of players they’ve got coming back.

I want to see the other team give up after the third quarter. I want us to finally exert our will on a good team for a change.

The story was more like a political position paper you would expect from a party convention, instead of a discussion on S&C. Someday Hobbs may be a good fit for a position at the white house or pentagon. Why use 10 sentences to say something clearly, when you can just as easily use 50 sentences and make it nearly unreadable.

Maybe I’m just reading too much into it – but given that the guy who wrote it is a grad assistant, this is probably an academic piece of work, not just blog banter, so you’ll have to forgive him for using big words and long sentences.
