Regular tickets for the game in Jacksonville would rise from $40 to $60 in 2012 and rise to $70 in 2014 and $75 in 2017. Club seating would increase from $70 to $100 in 2012, $110 in 2014 and $120 in 2017.
The 2012 price increase would generate an additional $1.779 million in revenue.
Georgia’s total revenue for the game would increase from $3.7 million in 2011 to $6.8 million in 2017.

The farce is: (1) UGA would make more money if the game is played home and home because Sanford Stadium has more seats than the Gator Bowl or whatever they are calling it this week. It helps that the city of Jacksonville throws in some dough to defray travel expenses (read: bribe). (2) Thousands of UGA fans who would get to see a game played in Athens don’t get to see their team play because of the smaller venue and also since the tickets are split between the 2 schools, only 1/2 the crowd is UGA. Sure, 1/2 this year plus 1/2 next year equals the same number of seats if the stadiums were the same size but that ignores that the crowd is the same 1/2 every year. Any way you look at it playing in Jacksonville every year is bad for the trhousands of UGA fans who could see the GA/FLA game if it were in Athens every other year but never get to see it because it is in Jacksonville every year. (3) Price gouging your own fans/alums is pretty damn lame. Is that enough farce for you?

Thanks Senator for your (as usual) cordial, cogent response. My reply in the same order is: (1) The $1.2 mil less over a 2 year period that UGA would make if the UGA-FLA series were home and home translates to $600,000 per year. If the UGA-FLA game were part of the season ticket package that would be a superior product and more than justify a slight increase in the season ticket price–say, $1 per ticket for all games. Such an increase would more than make up difference and the University wouldn’t have to gouge its fans and alumni in Jacksonville as has been discussed on this very blog today. Moreover, Groo and others go into the issue about how much the vendors and merchants in Jacksonville profit from that game being there. I have nothing against the Jacksonville merchants but just why is it that THEY should get all the goodies and not Georgia businesses? (2) North Georgia fans would like the game in Athens every other year. Basically the South Georgia fans who got tickets to the game when it was in Gainesville would have basically the same drive to Gainesville as they now have to Jax only it would be every other year. (3) No comment is necessary. A final note. I am on record of being in favor of the UGA-FLA game alternating between Jacksonville and the Georgia Dome. Both stadiums have less seats than the university stadiums but do have about the same number in each place. If you keep the price structure the same both places the profits would be about the same for both schools. It is unfair to expect UGA to play a team that is consistently as good as FLA has been the last 20 years as an away game every year. Plus, in even years UGA only gets 3 SEC home games. That is simply not fair. The bigger problem for the rest of the SEC East is that FLA gets effectively 5 SEC home games in even numbered years (counting JAX as a home game for them). That is a tremendous advantage over every other team in the East not just UGA. If things stay as they are with that game in Jacksonville at minimum the SEC needs to adjust FLA’s schedule so that it drops a home SEC game in even numbered years simply in the interest of fairness and sportsmanship.

P.S. The WLOCP really is a home game for FLA every year like when Bama used to play some of its home games each year in Birmingham. Let’s recognize reality at least. If the venue of the game isn’t changed at least even out the schedule disparity.

With all due respect, Mayor, you’re not getting it.
There’s nothing stopping McGarity from raising home ticket prices on top of this. But it’s the cachet of the Cocktail Party that allows them to premium price that game.
In a few years, you’re talking about a $4.5+ million dollar bonus, per game. There’s no way Georgia and Florida would ever walk away from that.
You might as well face it: this battle is over. The dollars have spoken.

What’s moot about FLA having 5 SEC home games every other year and UGA having only 3 SEC home games that same year? I thought this was about student athletes competing for their universities. If you have to have the game in JAX every year why doesn’t the SEC make a schedule change to make FLA play one of their other SEC games as an away game that year ? Why can’t UGA get another home SEC game the years where we now only get 3 home SEC as things stand? I am not arguing move the game now (even though I think it should be moved). I am saying if you leave the game in JAX there should be a schedule adjustment.

Save the facts with this guy Senator, he is totalled, and shamelessly, blinded on the subject. He has a different opinion, that is fine, but needs to give up trying to argue the point using logic or finances….he swings and misses on both counts everytime.
As to the increase, while I think it is unwise to set prices that far into the future, these prices are a bargain. The current direction of both the value of the dollar and the inflation rate may make this game pocket change for the homeless in Jacksonville by 2017. $120 a ticket when a tank of gas for a sedan may be higher? Seems pretty cheap to me.

Is it not a fact ScotchBreath that UGA only has 3 SEC home games in even numbered years? Is it not a fact that FLA has 4 SEC home games plus the UGA-FLA game in Jacksonville (effectively 5 SEC home games) in even numbered years? I am giving up (for purposes of discussion) the call to move the game. I want to know why the UGA and FLA SEC schedules shouldn’t be adjusted to reflect the competitive advantage this gives FLA. Have you become a FLA fan now? All we ever hear out of you is banal BS. You have yet to refute a single point made on this thread.

Fact: Ticket price sensitivity for SEC fans is pretty much equal to most folks’ price sensitivity for gas. It sucks when you have to pay more, but you have to have it, so you pay it anyway.
And that’s why it’s smart for the schools to raise ticket prices (up to a certain point).

Florida fans gloss over the increase and gladly pay up. Georgia fans astutely observe the increase and complain about the product, as they should. However, the ticket to that game could cost $1000 and I’d still consider it a bargain if I walked away a winner, knowing exactly how the arrogant Florida fans felt.

So it wasn’t good timing to raise the ticket price by $10 back in February but now it’s good timing to raise it $20 four months later? That doesn’t make a lot of sense. Like fuelk2, I’ll complain about it, but I’ll still end up buying one.

Those who can buy the tickets will still buy them. Those that cannot will either stay home and watch it on CBS or travel to St. Simons/Jekyll/Jax and party there for a few days.
The World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party is not all it is cracked up to be…yeah, I said it. I’m sure I would feel differently if it wasn’t a perennial ass-kicking, but it is what it is.
I have enjoyed hanging out in St. Simons for the past few years, going to the huge beach party that goes on all day Friday, and watching the game on the big screen they set up at Barberito’s. It’s a good time. Plus, it’s a short walk back to the hotel so you can get as drunk as you like (which I always want to after our inevitable loss) and not have to worry about driving another hour or more back from Jax.
