This whole “we tried to tell that dude, and we’re glad he’s gone” story that Tennessee is trying its hardest to pitch to the NCAA about the Laner would be a lot more believable if (1) he’d actually lost his job over the violations that the school is desperately seeking to separate itself from and (2) Mike Hamilton didn’t have such a fine body of work indicating the exact opposite attitude while Junior wore orange.
Of course this is the NCAA we’re talking about, so it might work.
Get The Picture 
Yeah, basically. The fact that people are buying it for some “sincere” act is ridiculous. It is playing the game, in the face of the NCAA everyone plays the game. The “it’s there fault not ours” or “we didn’t know” or “I didn’t know” moves are aplenty. Hats off to them if it works, they might outline a new CYA strategy.

I don’t understand why the head coach is not considered part of the institution. In Tressels case, he was the face of the football program, so much that the President joked that he could be fired by Tressel. It should not matter if he kept the “compliance staff” in the dark. As the Head coach, he should be considered a part of the “compliance staff.” To not hold a University accountable for the actions of its head coach, regardless of how stealthily he cheated, is ridiculously absurd.

+100 This is hypocritical of the NCAA. They held USC to a standard of “they should have known” since an assistant knew what was going on. They let OSU off free when the HC knew and did nothing but cover it up. They really need to address this trial by coin flip enforcement thing they have going on.

Is the tOSU thing settled? I thought it was just that tOSU had made rec’s to the NCAA about self-punishment and that the NCAA was nodding in approval but had not acted officially? (I’m not following it too closely, so I could be totally wrong).

UT’s position is kind of like a trucking company telling it’s driver that he has to be 200 miles away in 2 hours and then disclaiming responsibility and blaming the driver for speeding when there is a wreck.
