Doom, doom, doom…

Steve Spurrier may remain optimistic about South Carolina’s chances in the wake of his program’s offseason problems (ask Mark Richt how that works out, dude), but can he withstand the awesome force that is Negative Grohmentum?

If South Carolina football players have the same attitude as their fans I would expect a little Negative Grohmentum. These SOB’s around here are talking about who they’re going to play/beat in the BCS Championship.

4-8 sounds pretty accurate. They could still beat the Dawgs and make their season.

I think it hilarious and this is a messed up way to put it but USC fans act like they are the greatest team in the SEC. That’s not the why I remember it. I see it as them not winning their way to the east champs but more like the rest of the east out losing them and I know that sounds stupid but they really didn’t beat any teams that were great.

USCe beat Bama which turned out to be a 3 loss team. That was the best win for USCe last year.

      • Let’s not discredit the ‘Bama win. 2010 ‘Bama is probably the best three-loss team ever. They lost to USC while in the middle of a tough road trip and in what was probably the best performance by USC in the past 20 years, to LSU in Death Valley, and to the national champions.

  4. I’ll say it again: USC did benefit from a weak SEC East last year, but USC was also much better than it usually is, and it should be better this year. This isn’t an either / or issue. Look at the USC roster this year and tell me if you don’t think it’s better than it used to be. Regardless of what Georgia and Florida do, I expect Carolina to win at least 9 or 10 games, and so does the rest of world outside the Peach State and the shores of Lake Hartwell. The question Dawg fans should be asking themselves isn’t whether or not USC will regress to six or seven wins, but rather or not Georgia is ready to beat Carolina head-to-head and then to win 10 or 11 to Carolina’s 9. Wondering whether or not you’ll benefit from your opponent’s regression is weak sauce, anyways.

Gamecock man proved my point USC won what 2-3 games out of the last ten (1 of them being last year of course ) and now it is UGA that has to be ready to play them. Ill give credit were its due but USC has had good players the past years they’ve lost too. This kind of reminds me of the Blake Mitchell days at USC. Inconsistency at qb with a good receiver and good rb (not as good as Latimore but decent). If memory serves me correctly they had clowneys counterpart also with highly anticipate de Marcus Laurence

    • Having a player like Lattimore makes a big difference, though. And despite his flaws, Garcia is a clearly superior QB to Blake Mitchell. And the offensive line is much better these days, too. That’s what really held us back during the Blake Mitchell years.

        Garcia is no Phil Petty.

        • Look at the stats. Garcia’s dwarf Petty’s. Of course, Petty was usually at his best in the tough spots, which hasn’t been the case with Garcia.

Well, he’s no Tanneyhill. And stats aren’t everything.

I see you got my point. Well done. Petty was also gritty, professional, and maximized every ounce of his potential. I had, and still have, great respect for him as both a player and a person. Garcia? Mmm, not so much.

            • You’ve def. got a point. If Garcia had Petty’s work ethic, he’d probably have multiple All-SEC selections to his credit. Petty was a hard worker, a great competitor, and a player teammates could count on. Garcia…well, you know. And like CLT Dawg said, stats don’t tell you everything. For one thing, Holtz didn’t throw the ball anywhere near as much as Spurrier, which partly explains the stat differential. I still think Garcia’s the better QB, but it’s hard not to appreciate Petty more.

  6. Much Ado About Nothing. My Nothing. USCe is & S/B the favorites.
My Take: If the Dawgs win, & I expect them to win, It will be an Upset Victory.

    • Despite everything I’ve said here, I don’t see USC as a favorite in this game. This is a game between very evenly matched teams. I expect a close game that’s decided by a few key plays.

If USC wants a indication of how the game will go with UGA, just watch the Boise St game. It’s either 2-0 or 0-2 for the Dawgs

        • I don’t know. I could easily see UGA going 1-1 to open. If you beat Boise, it could just mean that Boise is overrated and that you’re still capable of losing to Carolina. Similarly, if Boise wins, it could be because Boise is legit and you could still be good enough to beat Carolina. Still too many possibilities right now.

That said, I can’t say that I’m not kind of happy that your team is playing the tougher opener. Although I’m not really sure that the idea that Spurrier will play close to vest against a relatively weak opening opponent really makes sense these days, considering that it’s fairly likely he plans to run Lattimore 30+ against UGA.

          • I tell you what: ECU sucks on defense, but you guys had better be ready for their offense.

Ellis Johnson has an interesting task ahead of him preparing for three wildly different offenses in the first quarter of the season.

            • That’s true. ECU>UGA will be an interesting transition for our defense. I’m not too worried ECU, though. If I recall correctly, they’re breaking in something like 4 new offensive linemen. Maybe pass protection won’t matter against a three-step drop, but I seem to recall hearing the same thing last year when we played Southern Miss, who never managed to get anything going against us. We’ll see. And even if ECU does score often, they’ll likely need to score at least 40 points to win this game.

Even in our very good years, USC played us tough. You just never know. Thank God for Pollock.
