Dawg stat watch, Week 8

All three of the contenders in the East enjoyed a bye week, which means that Georgia remains in contention to win the play against the best team in the country sweepstakes, so the stat watch lives on.

Here’s where Georgia currently stacks up with the rest of the SEC:

  1. Hold opponents under 17 points per game.  Georgia’s defense is yielding 20.4 ppg.
  2. Finish at least +8 in turnover margin.  Georgia’s turnover margin is +5.
  3. Average better than 380 yards per game on offense.  Georgia’s offense is averaging 411.1 ypg.
  4. Finish in the top five in total defensive yardage.  Georgia’s defense ranks third in total yardage.
  5. Finish in the top three in first downs.  Georgia is tied for third in first downs.
  6. Finish no worse than third in passing yardage.  Georgia is third in passing yardage.
  7. Finish no worse than third in sacks.  Georgia is tied for third in sacks.

In other words, situation unchanged, which makes sense.  On to Jacksonville.

We’ll find out da truth about Richt this weekend.
Your basic litmus test if ever there was one.

Can live with losing to UA or LSU, but am done with losing to UF.

  2. +3 turnover margin and ten points or less allowed this week get us within a shut out of New Mexico State of fitting into all the standards. Grantham and company need to make that happen. The best part is that while I don’t expect that to happen this weekend I also wouldn’t be shocked if it did.

  3. I think everyone knew the last five games were must win and that all of them were probably winnable. We haven’t been playing great teams by any stretch of the imagination. They are all the scrubs of the SEC.

My concern has been the game this week since falling to USCe. It is the make or break for CMR.

Win ugly or win pretty, doesn’t really matter. A win in Jax would go a long way toward righting the ship, even against a mediocre UF squad.

    Key stat watch:

    0-2 against ranked teams

    5-0 against unranked teams.

Are those stats just SEC play, or do they also include the OOC games?

Didn’t the defense give up like 80 points against the 2 good teams?

None of those stats mena anything, they’re good against bad teams, bad against good teams, so those stats can be skewed by good play against bad teams.

I’d like for stats against ranked teams, the defense averages 40 points against ranked teams for example.

    • I hate to interrupt your narrative (I’m getting tired just trying to keep up with you), but I don’t think you’re getting the point of the stat watch.

Those stats simply correlate to prior seasons when Richt’s teams went to the SECCG. It doesn’t really matter how they were compiled; that’s how things looked when the dust settled. I’m just checking to see whether history can repeat itself.

Besides, at this point, who cares about what Georgia does against ranked teams? There aren’t any ranked teams left on the schedule.

Richt record against ranked teams is 0-7 last 2 seasons, wins were all against unranked teams so they don’t mean anything.

  9. It is terrible for me to learn that the SEC Is so weak. I was mistakenly under the impression that SEC Teams were a notch above most other teams.
But, Nothing to it: just beat up a lot of crappy teams. The fact that the Dawgs outplayed & outcoached USCe also does not enter into it. either. Now I know.. Terrible Season, Terrible Coach (although the best HC we have had in my lifetime). Maybe we should just cancel everything until we get a better coach & a better team.. Or maybe I should just quit reading the comments.
