Love this quote from the Urban Meyer Innocence Tour:
Q: What do you recall of Hernandez’s brushes with the law during his time at Florida?
A: Relatively speaking, he had very minor stuff. He was questioned about being a witness (to a shooting), and he had an argument in a restaurant (in which Hernandez allegedly struck an employee in an argument over an unpaid bill), and he was suspended one game (reportedly for a failed marijuana test). Other than that, he was three years a good player. That was it.
“Relatively speaking”? Relative to what – other Gator players?
Aside from that Mrs. Kennedy, how was your trip to Dallas?

The NYT looked at the 2008 Gaytors and determined that 34% of that team has been arrested … Some more than once. “That number included 16 players on that season’s final two-deep roster, nine of whom were starters, as well as a kicker, punter and returner.”

Hernandez Among Many Who Found Trouble at Florida in the Meyer Years.
As posted in the thread from yesterday, this is on the front page of the Sports section, at least in the nationally distributed version. (Below the fold, section B.) I was happy someone finally decided to notice.

The quote from Janoris Jenkins tells you all you need to know about Corch’s policy regarding discipline.

Just asking. After all is said and done, what does McGarity know about these shenanigans at FU? He is the assistant AD afterall. Just asing.

Aren’t we supposed to be praising him because he didn’t have some sort of pre-nup with the Gainesville PD?

Yeah, They were caught on camera using the mugged student’s (who was soon in the hospital) debit card to buy snacks.
Hard to pull the shades down after the fact.
Well of course unless it’s Gainesville or Knoxville.

We have our share – remember the four bozos who robbed some folks earlier this year?
Thing is, though, most get the ole “roster management” treatment if they act up too bad.

What is that, pray tell?

Well, that all depends on timing. Out of season, roster management. In the fall, handled internally (if the media actually reports it).

Hernandez seems likely to have shot 4 people, and witnessed another shooting.
RELATIVE to famous mass-murderers, he’s a “pretty good” guy.

you can say what you want about Meyer’s disciplinary policies but at the end of the day the only thing that matters is this: the guy won 2 SEC and Nat’l Championships at Florida. He himself did nothing illegal or out of compliance with NCAA rules. The only thing that matters is winning. We pack Sanford Stadium because we want to see the red and black beat the skulls in of whoever’s lined up opposite them, not because they’re a bunch of model citizens at work. Anyone who disagrees can kindly show me their support for Joe Cox or Tereshinski III during the lean years. An argument of how many “thugs” were on Meyer’s team is irrelevant and pointless.

That quote/position does not represent me as a Dawg fan in any way. I am not saying you are alone, but I personally do NOT judge coaches by faux titles given, nor even the real ones earned like the SEC for instance. Yes, we pay them to win, but there has to be standards that are not compromised. No one expects total “choir boys” but you don’t trade your integrity for titles. I would prefer Ivy League level football before becoming that shallow.

Amen! Some people (fans) are only interested in winning so they can boast as if they had something to do with the wins. Proud to be a GEORGIA BULLDAWG where we behave more like the Ivy League. Academics seem more important to GEORGIA than some other SEC schools. Thank you JAN….what was her last name?

+2 Macallanlover,
And besides it makes zero sense Charlotte. You listed two less than stellar qbs. You could have listed David Greene or D.J. Shockley or Matt Stafford or Aaron Murray. Not sure I recall any of them getting in trouble with the law…unless you consider that sill picture of Staff holding up an empty beer keg.
You don’t have to relish mediocrity. Doesn’t mean you should accept the garbage that went on in Gainesville for almost a decade.

Actually that underscores my point: that fans care about winning not the characters of the actors involved. Were Greene, Shockley, Stafford, & Murray good guys? Absolutely. But they were loved because they threw tds and won games not because of their tremendous volunteer work. Had they started turning the ball over you can bet your bottom dollar there would’ve been cries to bench them character be damned. I’m not saying high character guys and talented football players can’t be one and the same but can we please stop pretending like the former is a primary concern of ours as a fan base or that we get some prize for being extremely non strategic in how we as an institution handle player discipline.

We associate Meyer’s character to his players because he is a lying hypocrit who shouldn’t be making pious statements about helping someone understand what family life is like when he is making a terrible family setting available in his mentoring. He talks about leaving CFB to spend time with his family (like there is a problem) and is soon back into a high profile job with ESPN sans “The Family”.
If he just could accomplish the moral mentoring like he says he feels instead of how he proves that he is just seeking your empathy, then there would be a point to your words. We rail against him on here because we want others to see (from published evidence) that he is no mentor-he just talks like one. Crier, as an individual, has no social redeeming qualities to many of us. You need to closely examine his quotes vs what he does before assuming this is fan jealousy. His trying to scrub FU’s face clean from his recruiting practices while there falls short as well. He is turning FU in for any little breach of recruiting etiquette as we speak, while at the same time stating that they had nothing to do with recruiting and tolerating bad eggs.
Thank goodness we have a coach who can live his words and when a player proves to be a bad actor, he is kicked away from our institution faster than Crier can lie. And that’s damned fast.

Performance on the job is how success is measured. That’s a given. I work in audit, so I see a lot of “stars” in the company. I can tell you from experience that you must weed out the bad boys & girls because they rot the organization from within, and the damage is long lasting and expensive. Holding on to low/no integrity people because they “get the job done” will eventually destroy any team. That’s why organizations should be transparent about discipline/terminations–as an example to everyone else and to give everyone confidence about the organization’s ethics. Discipline is applied to correct behavior and so everyone knows a fair system is applied to all. No compromise.

Richt has also won 2 SEC Championships. No national titles, but ultimately those are more about timing. 2002, 2007, and 2012 UGA would’ve taken 2006 Florida to the cleaners.

Did Irvin Meyers win at UF? Sure. Should he be held to a higher standard of player discipline because he was a sanctimonious douchebag hypocrite during his entire Gator career? Also sure.
Jimmy Johnson never claimed to be a choir boy or to be running a Baptist Sunday school. Irvin constantly bleated about how his guys were the top 1% of the top 1%, not just in football but all across the board. He’s the worst kind of smug snake oil salesman, just like the slobbering douchebag on ESPN, Lou Holthz, who loves him to the point of embarrassment. Anyone who thinks Irvin is going to “clean things up” at Ohio State has been smoking too much strong weed. Maybe Hunley Johnson has an office in Columbus.

This is somehow related to my kids and therefore everyone who is attacking me right now is attacking my children. I will do anything to protect them and so would any decently moral father. My family comes first and so does my health. If you have a problem with that, your priorities are out of order and you should spend a lot of time looking in the mirror.
