“Coach Richt, Coach Johnson’s outside. He wants to know if he can borrow a couple of receivers.”

Reading this excellent David Ching article on the versatility of this year’s Georgia receiving corps, I couldn’t help but note the huge disparity in experienced production between the Georgia and Georgia Tech receivers.  While Georgia brings back six receivers who caught at least ten passes last season, the Jackets boast one starting receiver who returns with eight catches and another who doesn’t have a catch in college.  Their backups are redshirt freshmen.

And so, yeah, while I get the whole triple option mystique, grasshopper, a little known thing about Johnson’s offense is that his team is a heck of a lot more successful when the passing game is clicking than when it’s not.  Per Paul Myerberg, “Since the start of 2008 season, Tech is 23-5 when averaging at least 9.0 yards per attempt and 18-21 when averaging 8.9 or fewer yards per attempt.”

I know Vad Lee is awesome and all, but I question whether he’s awesome enough to overcome a group that’s lacking… well, calling them green might be a compliment.

Bonus question:  does Todd Gurley finish this season with more catches than Georgia Tech’s leading receiver?  (That question is not nearly so farfetched as you might think.)

Sanders Commings had one catch. Was that the fake punt in the SECCG?

Don’t recall the receiver, but Lynch threw it. This would place him in the top 5 of gnat QB’s in the Johnson era.

Now he gets a chance to work on his underachieving.

Love Pease stating that Driskell will throw 300 yds consistently each game. I wonder if he is counting big on shovel passes.

Did he top 300 yds in any game last year?

Nope! He topped 200 only twice (Tennessee and Kentucky), barely both times. His best was 219 @ Tennessee. He threw for fewer than 100 yards four times (not counting the game he didn’t play).

In the 2011 UGA/GT game, their starting QB (Washington) had only 1 more completetion than interceptions …. His line was 3-10-2

I think Gurley finishes with fewer catches than the top Tech receiver. HOWEVAH! I think we utilize Marshall in the passing game more (split back sets and so forth), and he beats the leading Tech receiver by two receptions.

  5. I like that we have the flexibility to put Mitchell in the slot in particular personnel groups. That could be interesting to see what kind of matchup problems we can create with Conley and Rumph (or Bennett) on the outside.
