In case you were unaware, it’s opening week for college football.
I thought I’d get the festivities started with an excellent question Year2 raised in this post:
So with game day just about upon us, what are you looking forward to most?
I’ll start. As a Dawg fan, for me it’s all about seeing how quickly the defense gels. As good as the offense looks like it will be, if the team can continue the downward trend of defensive scoring shown under Grantham, 2013 has the chance to be a very special season for Georgia. But how much time will it take for things to settle in?
On the larger college football stage, it would have to be seeing how Autographgate plays out, both on the field and in ESPN’s studios. Does Johnny Football crack under the media pressure? And if he doesn’t, will PAWWWLLL be able to keep his shit together?
And you?
I am as giddy as a Delta, Delta, Delta in the house for my junior year. Calm down…you have done this before.

I’m looking forward to a sunny Saturday with the temperature in the low to mid 70’s, with a good supply of cigars, malt beverages, and food, and the new TV on the screen porch.

So…where do you and Mrs. Hogbody live?

That is exactly my plan Hogbody, to the T. Only question is whether I will actually need a fire as I have the last two weekends, or just build one anyway to give me something to do to use up my nervous energy during timeouts.
On that subject of watching outside, my son tells me there is a new product out, or coming out, that you can spray on electrical devices to waterproof them by sealing the casing. Humidity/moisture, and extreme temps take a big toll on outside TVs because of the exposed connections, even under cover of roofs. He heard about it on a podcast a few months ago but couldn’t remember the name of the product, or if it was currently available in the market. If you know of this, I am very interested, if not, you might want to keep an eye out for it to protect your own TV. The price of the Sunbrite TV designed specifically for outside use is unrealistic, imo, so I would rather just replace conventional TVs for the time being.
LikeLike
TV’s designed for the outdoors are $$$$. 32″ maybe $4500. But they have the heat sinks and fans to support them. I can’t see how you could moisture proof an indoor set. Circuit boards are easy enough to get to I suppose. Electricity fed to an LCD with moisture on its surface will cause the electrodes to corrode degrading picture quality. When Pop’s started to go it began with the volume control and then went down hill. On the other hand a 42″ E series Vizio will run you 500 bucks. You should be able to get a couple of seasons out of it.

The 55″ Sunbrite model I checked on was about $7500 when I looked it up. My audio/video expert told me I could only expect 2-3 years before I would have to replace the unit that came with my home. It is near the end of year 3 since the house was built, no problems yet, but as AHD says below, moisture is surely taking its toll. I will just have to pony up another $700-800 when it goes because I am not giving it up, not is the Sunbrite a good option at their current price. That is why I am looking for a new solution. I am sure a cover, or having a frame built around it to close it off can delay the process but that seems more trouble than it is worth. As long as it doesn’t go until the off season I will be fine.

You should go see the guys at Bang & Olufsen, (Phipps Plaza). They are upstairs above Tiffany’s. Those boys can do anything.

Macallan: If you like Macallan because of the smokiness, have you tried Laphroaig yet? It’s the peatiest of the peaty.
AHD: I can still carry a 42″ flat screen pretty easy, so I’ll try the moving thing.
LikeLike
Actually I like it because of it’s lack of smokiness. Macallan is aged in 100% sherry wood, and only once after which the casks are broken apart and sold to other distilleries for their own unique taste formulas. If you like a real peaty taste I believe Lagavullan (sp) is the highest rated single malt along with Macallan. Was reasonably priced versus Macallan so I bought a bottle. Had one shot from it and let my friends finish it off for me. Like wines, single malts are very different from one another. There is no right or wrong, just what one prefers.

MacAllan: wouldn’t you want that casing to breathe a little to vent heat, etc?

We built Dad a new house about three years ago and a large screen porch was essential. He’s in his 80’s and his house needed to reflect that. Just went down and tuned his porch up for the Clemson game. Like you he likes his geared for game days. Four recliners for he and his buddies. My sister shuttles everyone home after the game. Just a word of caution. Don’t leave your tv out on the porch. Put it on a dolly and move it in and out. Heat is always a problem. Samsung has rated their LCD for 104 degrees. Here’s the kicker- no matter what you do moisture will develop in your tv and that will eventually kill it.

That’s just the way it’s done at the Boca del except the weapons of choice for the Mandelbaums are hospital beds instead of recliners and the TVs are harder to move

LOL. Doubt if they would do the hospital bed routine. They are all “hard, pipe hitting vets”. There is even a Master Chief that sits in one of those recliners. The stories they tell and the stuff they know how to do would fill a book or two. Wives and daughters moved them all to the porch because of the cigar smoke, language and loud outbursts during the games. And daughters really do dote on their dads when they get older. It is quite an experience to sit in on one of those game days on the porch. I’ve been told….”son, if you shut up and listen you might just learn a thing or two.” Seriously.

This is something I hope for every year, but especially now since Stingtalk has become a daily read/guilty pleasure: I really want Georgia Tech’s season to suck. Not suck so bad that Paul Johnson gets fired, but suck enough that he’s on the hot seat for another couple of years.

We should be pretty good, but the areas I want to review:
Defensive substitution- TG needs to get ’em line up early
Safety Play- Less lber play, more pass defense
FB play – is this our answer to Clowney?
Tight Ends – It’s time for them to block somebody
Screens – Could be big for us this year if Murray ain’t scared
Punt Return – If we trot out last years punt returner I might just smack my closest dawg fan.
I’m setting my myself up for a frustrating night, huh?

I am looking forward to watching Gurley and Marshall pick up where they left off last year. I would really like to see Bobo use Marshall in the slot and as a Reggie Bush type of back. If he gets in space, watch out!
I was really not worried about the defense at the beginning of camp, even though we had a bunch of new starters most of these guys played last year. It isn’t like we are lining up 11 true freshman against Clemson. The injuries in the secondary have me a little worried, I hope that they are just being overstated in the media.
Go Dawgs!

A funny thing happened as I was struggling through Sunday night, knowing what was coming….I watched the Senator’s boyfriend Paul Finebaum doing a top ten whatever show on CSS, and you know what Paul said there on that show?
He said “Run Lindsay Run” was the best game in the history of the SEC, better than the “Bluegrass Miracle” because it meant so much more in the overall scheme of things.
And….later when the list was top ten receivers, Paul bitched about leaving AJ and Hines Ward off the list.
These things could indicate at least three things….
1. That Finebaum knows him some football
2. That his ratings are down in Georgia
3. If a dwombolaska like Finebaum is talking about Georgia, could this mean the waters are about to part?
I think the season starts Thursday night when the enemy of my enemy plays South Carolina….Hook em Heels????
God Almighty its been a long, long off season.
