Weiszer draws our attention to a battle to watch at G-Day over the left guard spot on the offensive line, but I’m more interested in the curious incident as to the rest of the o-line Dawgs, because it’s starting to look like the other four positions are stabilizing. As Weiszer puts it, Theus hasn’t budged at left tackle. Andrews is the center. Pyke seems to have grabbed the right guard job. We’re not hearing much about anyone Houston is having to fight off at right tackle, either.
Given the significant turnover on the line, it would be nice, to say the least, if this season’s bunch emerged from spring practice. The more time to work with each other building a rapport, the better.

I wonder if Pyke will seem as established at RG once Dantzler comes back.

The last two O-Lines have looked good on G-Day. But in each case, it wasn’t much of an indicator as to what we had in September.

Really? I must have missed that. Biggest thing I remember from last year’s game was Theus mailing it in on a sack. The 2012 game started out okay for the o-line, but they wore down as the day went on. And I didn’t much depth on display either year.

All true. But there were some good things. And the team overall was lackluster as the day went on. BTW, that’ll be something to watch for. How much energy the defense, and the team overall, plays with, and will they sustain it in the second half.
It’s hard with this format, and I get that. Sometimes I wish they’d just scrimmage. But going hard on every play is one of the big things Pruitt is trying to instill. We haven’t done that, as a team, in a very long time, much less G-Day.
So that’ll be the thing I’m looking for, more than anything else. That, and fundamentals. From what we hear, Pruitt doesn’t tolerate slacking. So I wanna see if it carries over to G-Day.
And when the defense is like that, it usually carries over to the offense.

To clarify, by “looked good”, I mean they looked to be on track at that point in the year. As I posted at the time, both years, they “had a chance to be good” if they kept making progress. That’s what it looked like to me. They did some impressive things, and Houston was the most impressive in 2012 (if not ’13, can’t recall for sure).
But of course, both years they turned out to be mediocre. It’s just hard to tell too much from a Spring Game, at most any position, which is why I wish they would just scrimmage.
But you can see effort, and you can see intensity. Would sure like to see some Saturday. And see it sustained.
