What does Mark Richt have against defensive backs?

How many defensive backs does Georgia need, anyway?

**************************************************************************

UPDATE:

This was the kid that Pruitt flipped from Louisville, so maybe he’s not headed west.

  1. Why was he arrested and not just given a ticket? And why would you kick a player off the team for such a minor infraction, and not just have him miss some baseball games (we know how badly that hurts the player), or if doesn’t play another sport, just miss a week of Spring Practice?.

    Enquiring minds wanna know.

    J/K, of course.

  2. Too bad. No idea of the deatils, or what’s been going on with him all year. Seen to recall something of some minor resistance to Pruitt, but that’s all.

But just like all the others, this one doesn’t bother me. And another spot opens for Pruitt to be able to pick his player.

Pruitt DID pick this player, “flipped him from Louisville”

      • Understand. But there’s little chance, IMO, he would have targeted him. It’s possible, of course, because IDK. But he had two weeks or so to pull something together. Recruiting was, for all practical purposes, over.

Pruitt did a heckuva job with the few days he had, I thought. How many of our defensive signees he wouldn’t have gone after, we’ll never know. But there are quite a few, I think it’s safe to assume.

Looking forward to the 2015 class, which will be Pruitt’s first. I’m expecting an upgrade in quality, in terms of the overall class. And I doubt there’ll be even one that he doesn’t think can play at a high level in this League. He doesn’t seem like the type to roll the dice or compromise.

I just hope Pruitt understands the morals clause is different at Georgia than FSU. Not really so different than Bama, I spect.

          • I think he does. But I doubt he put up with it at FSU, either.

The kids who come in now will pretty much know what they’re getting into. They’ll either buy in soon, or their confrontation is on the horizon.

That’s not a bad thing. Pretty much the way it is at Alabama. It’s the way it should be, quite frankly. This is not the time to elaborate, but I suspect some of our older players, some still here and some not, may have been different, had they had a different beginning in a different culture.

We’re about where I thought we’d be back in the spring, in terms of players falling out. But it could be there’s still one or two left. Whatever, it’s a good thing, and a necessary thing, in terms of the team and the program.

Mark Richt needs to either start recruiting to his standards or change them.

Should we let him know that some Pansy is rippin’ him?

And I will go as oblique as you have: He can’t change all the kids.

And barring a prior school discipline record or a prior arrest record, how exactly is he supposed to recruit to his standard?

Exactly. When they’re 16 years old, we should be asking these guys if they plan to shoplift in the future. We should inquire about future plans to hit women. Then, all the ones who say they plan to do these bad things, get told you will no longer be recruited by UGA. This is a great plan. Sure fire chance of success.

2 star DB….2015 class is going to be huge. Walk the chalk line or Pruitt going to put the garbage at the curb and replace with his own. This was not a Richt decision.

Maybe he could let Chubb take more offensive snaps, and let Gurley play DB for awhile with Pruitt.
The list for DB position is getting longer by the day in Athens town.
Season is not over and this is getting way out of hand.

  14. seriously can an SEC school play 60 minutes against hurry up offenses with as few DBs as we have ? A weak spot just got weaker…just damn. Malcolm Mitchell this is your chance to pass Hines Ward as the best Dawg of all time ..back to defense .DB maybe your best chance in the NFL anyway. Just Damn

I guess the real question is how do we get DB help in a hurry.

We can try the juco route but when is the last time we got real production out of a juco DB? We had Hitman a few years ago but I don’t think he ever hit anything. Fenteng has been hurt. True freshmen at DB will bury us for the next couple of years. We need to sign 7 or 8 DBs this year.

There are good DBs in JCs all over the country. Many are there because they couldn’t make the grades in HS or the test scores–not because of lack of ability. Just make a concerted effort to identify them and offer them. Last off-season we were supposedly short of O-linemen. Several of our rivals signed JC O-linemen (Bama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Mizzou signed 2). Georgia signed zip. Hopefully we won’t make the same mistake this coming off-season with DBs.

The hitman had more facemask penalties then good tackles. He was literally good for at least 1 facemask penalty a game.

You would think that with all of the dismissals lately that everyone would be trying to walk a fine line, especially in the defensive backfield. Even if this is a first offense, common sense should tell you now is not the time to get in trouble. Do the right thing and you don’t have any reason to worry, and even with a coach that punishes but gives second chances- now is not the time to pop up on the police blotter.

I am glad to see turnover at a position where it is increasingly apparent that there was a lack of discipline and basic decision making ability (not to include Rico Johnson of course).

Its going to be interesting to see just how many DBs we sign in this recruiting cycle/class. I would like to see the breakdown of how many EEs we can take.

  17. Unless Pruitt can magically and quickly turn this into DB U we’re gonna be feeling these losses for a while. We might get one or two good ones and the rest will be class fillers we wouldn’t recruit much otherwise. Then the next couple classes will be used to try and purge and upgrade. Secondary is gonna be young for a while. This nucking futs.

That’s a very good description of our DB recruiting the past 9 years, and our defensive recruiting overall. Except the first part is somewhat exaggerated, IMO. In those 9 years, we’ve had 2 signees who were really top level players – Reshad Jones, Brandon Boykin, and you might include Ogletree, though he played more of a LB role. And IIRC Boykin was 3-star. Regardless, his talent was evident from the get-go.

Not so with Jones. He was elite physically, but was an acute head case. Had that not been the case, he might have been a consensus All-American. As it was, he was a liability most of the time he was one the field, and that’s why he went from an early first-round physical talent to a late afterthought draft pick.

Anyway, we really haven’t had as much DB talent over these years as most presume.

But I think you have it wrong about Pruitt, Jabo. Unless I’m very wrong, he’s not going to compromise when it comes to evaluation and targeting. If he doesn’t think a kid can play in the SEC at a high level, he’ll pass on him. I think he understands that every spot is precious, and you don’t just fill the numbers. Not if you want to compete at the highest level.

I could be proven wrong, but don’t think so. Having watched this circus on defense for 10 years, and suffered the frustration that goes with it, I certainly hope I’m not wrong.

We have a coach now. Finally. All we need now is players. Not bodies. We’ve had those, and still have them. PLAYERS.
