There was some murmuring on Reddit about a “Heisman candidate” selling autographs that went on ebay. And there was some suggested linkage to UGA. ESPN was looking into it and the guy was not going to cooperate because the Manziel seller who was interviewed, even though he would not cooperate, can’t get anyone to sign for him anymore. I can see the same thing happening as with Manziel but this time we’ll fall on our sword because we’re UGA and that’s what we do.

If this were something unethical, immoral, or illegal, I would agree with you. Gurley comes from a poor family, and the world wants to give him money for a signature. The NCAA makes no effort whatsoever to provide a way to resolve that tension, so what the f*ck do you want him to do? I would be doing the exact same thing in his situation. As long as this system is in place, fans should just view this as a systemic risk for successful players.

It’s not morally wrong for an athlete to profit off of their likeness. A judge already ordered the NCAA to stop forcing these rules in the coming years. If he committed an actual crime I’d be with you. However, in this case I am angry at our program for not standing up for student-athletes who are being abused by the NCAA’s asinine (and illegal) rules.
By the way, if he took money we’re going to be 0-5 to start the season, so there’s really no sense in not playing him until he’s found guilty 😉

You don’t get to decide what rules you are going to follow. You have to follow all of the rules, even when you don’t like them or disagree with them. You can disobey an unjust rule openly and honestly, but you have to accept the consequences that come with your disobedience.
We won’t have to forfeit if we didn’t know, or couldn’t reasonably have known. The NCAA cant strip last years BCS from FSU if some kid comes out tomorrow and says he cheated on his finals last year, unless the school knew or should have know about it.

Hold on. Manziel sat for 1/2 game for his signing and his friend was and is his agent. We simply sit Todd for 1/2 game to comply with punishment to be meted in kind. That way, the game won’t be forfeited later when he plays (as planned) in the 2nd half. That gives us another week for resolution back to punishment as served.

If he is guilty (and I’m making the assumption that he is otherwise we wouldn’t suspend him)-why can’t we just do the right thing? Regardless of your stance on the amateur rules, the rules are clear and not hard to follow. Gurley is a few months away from signing for big money-much bigger than an autograph.
If he is not guilty, our athletic department (and especially our head coach)should build a wall around him and protect him from the NCAA instead of self-penalizing. Who would question Richt if he stood up and said Gurley was innocent? Our head coach has banked regularly in the integrity department.

I’ve spoken out here before against the unjust rule that punishes college athletes from making $ off their likeness while others are making $$$$ off those likenesses. No other students would be punished for making $ off their image (imagine a theater arts major making $ from an appearance in “The Walking Dead”). It’s a stupid and un-American rule.
But it is the rule. And Todd G probably knew about the rule. Saw an article earlier today where Jeb Blazevich said UGA football staff puts the rules in front of the new guys and explains those rules. So if Todd G broke a rule he presumably knew about, the only question is: what’s the disciplinary measure? And as much as I hate to say it, if he did so knowing how much his absence would hurt his team, that was selfish, notwithstanding the understandable temptation put in front of a young man who probably doesn’t have much extra dough.
If it isn’t clear he did it, then I hope UGA wraps this thing up promptly, fights it tooth and nail and we all move on. But like others here, I know that won’t happen.

If I’m not mistaken, didn’t Auburn “suspend” Newton the week of our game with them at the height of the accusations against him, then lawyer up and force the NCAA to make a decision regarding his eligibility right then? The NCAA had nothing and he played the rest of the season. We did something similar just before the season during Jarvis Jones’ first year. All the talk was how we now had a lawyer to take it right to the NCAA and we were not going to roll over like we did with A.J. What happened? Did our milquetoast AD change his mind? McGarity acts like he worked his whole career under Dooley rather than Foley. I doubt he would roll over like this.

You’re right that there is a difference between a rule and a law. However one thing they are supposed to have in common is precedent and guidelines for punishment if they are broken.

This is like a sudden punch in the gut (or lower). Following the Georgia Bulldogs has become much more of a chore than I’d prefer. I don’t know who or what to blame (not that it would do any good anyway), but I’m finding it terribly sad that, if guilty of the violations(s), Gurley would risk abandoning his teammates over pocket change compared with what he’d be able to make in just another few short months. As unselfish as he appeared on the field, this just doesn’t fit.
Nothing short of astonishing. Thank goodness nobody has died, but it almost has that feeling about it.

Wow…late to the party. So I would have reacted like most of the above. Reading through this leads me to one faint hope…
…maybe, just maybe, CMR, Gurley and the AD have discussed the situation, know his side of the story, will take fair and appropriate steps with the administration, and not let UGA run afoul of the NCAA while at the same time protect Gurley’s (and eveyone else’s) interest.
Sure, there’s little precedent for this other than the Jarvis Jones thing and CMR seems to be learning lessons more and more.

Lets just cut to the chase, I’m calling Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton. If Tod Gurley gets more than a half game suspension then it’s because A) he’s not white and B) his parents aren’t fing millionaires. The NCAA is going to be so dead after this even if it is true, because they are about to take a walk on the third rail of American Politics.
Dear NCAA I just want to remind you that you morons are counting on the Congress to bail your sorry butts out of this current shark attack by voting you an Anti-Trust exemption. Do you really want to rule a poor black kid can’t make money from his likeness but you can. All of your political allies just left the building on this after any action greater than Johnny Football’s half suspension. Further I personally will not give the University of Georgia another cent and my father, I and my son all are alumni.
As far as all you Law & Order goodie two shoes out there. This country considers itself a country of laws because by and large all the damn politicians are lawyers. I am a lawyer and I think you should not be eligible to hold public office if you are a practicing attorney nor should you be allowed to practice for a period of 10 years after serving. Nothing in the world can stop my basic belief that it is the largest conflict of interest ever put over on the US Population.
And one last thing, if this goes further than this Saturday and I’m Todd Gurley’s parents, the young man does not play another down of football for the University of Georgia. He does not need us as much as we need him. They may not be as vindictive as I am but I’m just totally pissed at the NCAA and UGA.

As a lawyer do you agree with me that both laws and rules are based on precedent and set punishments if you break them. How would the high horse types on here like it if every time they broke a law or rule they were “punished” by a system that has no consistency in their punishments?

That’s exactly the problem. The rules are there but there enforcement is arbitrary and selective at the same time. The NCAA has too many rules and like the US government and all the states they are only enforced when it is convenient to enforce them. The Law is not an ass, it is the men who enforce it only when the accused furnishes his own rope. I worked for the most vile agency of the government for 11 years and quit because of the way I saw the law enforced. I saw many men and women of conscious quit rather than selectively enforce the revenue laws. If a law is too broad to be enforced it should be repealed. If you really believe in a law then enforce the damn thing equally otherwise you are violating the equal protection clause. I hope Todd has a long and successful career in the NFL and will follow him and pull for him in the future.

This is like driving 65 in a 55 zone. Damn near everyone in the world does it. We’re the only program in the country that recognizes it and decides we must be punished for such an evil deed.
The only think I can figure is that Richt thinks he can get him back by the Florida game if he’s held out for the next two games (since Emerson is saying $400 = 2 games). Guess I’ll give McGarity and Richt the benefit of the next week to see how this plays out.
Oh…and Nick Marshall’s a dick. I’d say someone should head butt him but that would probably just cure his inability to speak English.
