A sleepless night plays tricks on the brain.

Had a little trouble falling asleep last night… indigestion.  While I toss and turn, the following perverse series of thoughts cross my mind:

  • Mike Bobo gets the Colorado State job.
  • Bobo signs a contract similar to the one McElwain signed, complete with a ginormous buyout provision.
  • Bobo goes on to become a raging success as CSU’s head coach.
  • Richt retires four years from now and Bobo is the obvious leading candidate to succeed him.  The fan base and the money guys are united in this.
  • McGarity gets embroiled in a bidding war with Jeremy Foley, who has to replace McElwain, who’s been canned for failing to get Florida back to the SECCG.
  • As a result, McGarity agrees to pay CSU a $7 million buyout to sign Bobo as Georgia’s head coach – an amount that far exceeds what it would have taken to keep Bobo in Athens in the first place.

Tell me that isn’t the most Georgia Way thing ever.

I gotta cut back on the Mexican food.

You think Bobo would go to UF after CSU? Lay off the Mexican chow and take a sleeping pill.

  3. Looks like CSU have some savvy finance guys. Hire Bobo for 2 years. He does well. The headhunters come after him. They flip him for the 7 million and pocket the difference. HC for free. Plus they get a bump in their recruiting. CSU has an investment strategy? Georgia has a cash cow strategy? 😉
Make Mexican you mid day meal only. Eat you last meal early and light. You’ll get use to it and you’ll sleep better too.

A gut full of Calientito’s and you will do one of 3 things: (1)write the great American novel..(2) see the face of God (who I think looks a lot like Rodney Dangerfield,by the way) or, (3) will figure out what the F….. they are thinking over there a Butts-Mehre. I don’t see Bobo ending up at CSU. He’s a southern guy through and through.

Bobo may be a Southern guy through and through, but he’s not a fool. Getting a $1M dollar raise to become a head coach AND moving to Colorado would have almost any Southern boy singing “Rocky Mountain High” in his best John Denver voice.

If he gets the offer, I think he’s gone.

      • I thought the same thing at first, but the more I look at it he may be better off waiting on an offer from one if the power 5 also rans rather than taking a job at a school that is about to get financially squeezed out of being competitive.

Old memory of scene in a field between Fort Collins and north towards Cheyenne: Out in a large field was a couple of huge skeletons of a couple of Jurassic fossils created by welding old farm equipment together using harrow, rake and a few disks for ribs and backbone of a T Rex with ridged earth- moving bucket jaws. Awesome creative art by farmers at it’s best.

Good place to raise kids. Nice place to visit too. Rain and floods are kinda weird. If water from a creek has jumped the road don’t try driving through it. You’ll be surprised by where a little water can take your car.

Low’s in the 30’s? Maybe in the summer. In the winter, those flat plains don’t block that wind and snow coming out of Wyoming. It gets plenty cold out there, more than a South Georgia boy is used to, that’s for sure. But $1.5M buys a lot of coats. 🙂

No, the GA way would for Richt to retire after 4 years we are certain we are getting Bobo. Bobo stays at CSU, in a panic we offer the job to Rodney Garner, he tanks the program then after 5 years we try to hire the next hot coach, he says, yes, then no, then we hire the coach from Marshall and mediocrity reigns supreme, McGarity continues to fill the tank up and we start all over 5 years later finally hiring Spurrier’s son who gets almost there three times in 7 years….yadda yadda yadda Jon Richt leaves for CSU.

lol. I had rather hire Bobo off of CSU than promote him without HC experience. I see Bobo being the next Goff if promoted from within.

I know most of you think that I think Bobo’s mother buys him velcro sneakers but, if he came back from CSU, UGA might have a good run for a half dozen years.

I’m not sure I understand what you mean here. If Bobo wants to be a head coach he’s probably going to take the CSU job if offered (why wouldn’t he?). The “market rate” for a coordinator of his caliber is still well below the what CSU is likely to offer him to be their head coach. I’m not sure how paying him more the last couple of years would make a difference here.

      Vegan diet for you!

I’m sure the doc told you to stay away from those steaks and other high protein-rich foods that give you the equivalent of “the bends” on dry land. Personally, I’d drink more beer to flush that extra nitrogen out. You could at least enjoy the recovery. Mexi-food is the panacea since you gets your veggies and tortilla starches in dishes like fish tacos. Oh, and did I mention to drink lots of beer?

I feels for you. It’s worse than arthritis when it hits full force.

      • I was told less/no meats or fish and alcohol. Right now, I wish I were a vegan….or had a hacksaw. What I don’t get is that I’m fairly healthy and active. I do eat a lot of protein, though.

I just first experienced this about a year ago. It always hits me when I’m asleep. Don’t know why but it’s always when I’m asleep. I could do 30-40 miles of backpacking over a weekend and be fine. Then, a month later, randomly wake up and literally fall to the floor when I try to get out of bed.

The anti – inflammatory meds help but it takes about a day. It has been a couple months since my last spell but damn if I didn’t make up for it this morning. That’s what I imagine flaming hot nails being driven into your foot feels like. Crazy thing is that it’s never in my toes like it is for most. It’s the bones that lead to my toes, above the arch. Anyway…

All of this came about around the same time and I don’t think it’s any coincidence that I’d just gotten home from working on a DoD project in VA in which I worked 7 12s(+) for all of 2012. Only game I made that year was the SECC.

Yeah…I was doing my job(project manager) plus basically being a super as well. That year burned a hole in me physically and mentally. Plus, being salary, working 80-100 hour weeks, I might as well have been minimum wage. Construction was still struggling and we’d already laid a couple off so I was job scared, too. It kinda became every man for himself and they wouldn’t spell me so I told them to get bent when I got home. Finally realized I was valuable and couldn’t be happier with my current employer. They know how to take care of good people.

That’s 30-40 over a 3 day weekend. Ha! I actually try to stop and look. I don’t get in a rush unless I’ve already set up camp only to realize I’m miles short of where I need to be to not have 18 to make it to the truck on Sunday. Then I have to hike by moonlight to make time. This is all hypothetical of course. Ha!

Honestly to me it’s not a bad scenario assuming bobo makes the transition from great offensive coordinator to great head coach (this is very hard for every mark Richt or bob stoops there’s 5 Ron zooks)

In that scenario, 1) Bobo gets the growing pains out and cuts his teeth as a head coach at csu. 2)head coaches who have done the job successfully at a smaller program tend to be less risky a hire 3) we get a guy who’s a great recruiter and offensive mind 4) a guy who would be the best fit for BMO and the fan base (cannot underestimate this) and 5) he’s not coaching for a division rival.

To me there were 2 most likely scenarios given Bobo’s success as an oc. 1) HC at UGA 2)hc at smaller program. The scenario described above is much better than bobo being thrust into the head coaching job at Georgia prematurely.

A little insomnia will activate the creative scenario juices most times, Senator. ‘Course a little ganja would have created a scenario of MacG opening the purse, giving all the coaches a raise, asking Richt where he would like the IPF placed, announcing insurance provision for all athletes who attend UGA, admitting to a want-list submitted by all coaches that goes three yrs back; all the while stating that the Board of Regents and Tommy Lawhorne had forced him to manage by confrontation.

    Did someone mention Mexi-food?

Both CSU and CMB agreed to interview. To me, that means there’s a real possibility this happens. Fort Collins is a beautiful place and great for a family. CSU has been competitive vs. peers, and looks to be a good spot to start a HC career. And the money looks to be very good.

Three things work against UGA – low pay, low pay, and low pay. So I think McFrugal will have to make a very substantial offer to keep CMB if CSU wants to hire him.

    • Cojones

Agreed, unless Bobo doesn’t get the job and MacG plays his stingy hand. Then there would be nothing to hold Bobo from going where he will truly be valued, even if it’s for less money.

I don’t like this game being played by MacG at the behest of the Bd of Regents just because Richt made them look like shit some time ago and whose presence is probably a thorn in the side of a Vascular Surgeon who should have his own veins cleaned out before he becomes early fossilized.

Another thought on CSU. Considering the Big 12’s need to add a championship game, I could see CSU being a logical pick for a jump to a bigger stage.

CMB’s been an assistant for 14+ years – so he should be thoroughly prepared. One would think its time to step up, unless he truly isn’t interested in being a HC.

    Like

    • The Big 12 isn’t going to expand to have a championship game. It’s lobbying the NCAA to do away with the 12-school rule instead.

10 teams mean bigger slices of the pie to divvy up for conference schools. They like that.

      Like

      • W Cobb Dawg

And lobbying has worked so well for the big 12…. Nah, I respect your opinion brother Bluto, but I think they expand. And CSU is a logical selection considering their dire prospects for attracting desirable schools.
