Get used to it.

It’s jarring not seeing him in red, ain’t it?

Hey, it’s what he’s wanted, and judging from how things turned out for his predecessor, it’s a great opportunity.  So, what more needs to be said besides congratulations?

Well, since you asked…

  • Bowl game prep.  From what Chip Towers said, Georgia isn’t very far into installing its game plan, but really, this one doesn’t seem too daunting a task.  I expect Richt will run the offense and it’s not like the staff doesn’t have familiarity with Todd Grantham.
  • Other staff defections.  Towers hints at something others have mentioned, which is that Will Friend might follow, but I’m not sure Bobo takes many with him. For one thing, I don’t think it’s something he’d do to Richt.  For another, who would make a lateral move from Georgia to CSU?  The money won’t be better.  (On the other hand, if you’re looking for something non-Bobo related to freak out over, here you go.)
  • Recruiting.  Again, any kid committed to Georgia isn’t heading out to follow Bobo.  The question is whether any of the recruits Georgia’s targeted for the offense who Bobo focused on (Terry Godwin?) can be pried away by its SEC competition.  Tons of good recruiters on Georgia’s staff to tide things over, but I expect the next guy coming in will have to be in place well before signing day to end that questioning.
  • Will a favorite son return home?  Really, I’m amazed at the number of people who assume this is as much an opportunity for Georgia to hire an experienced head coach in Bobo down the road as it is for Bobo himself.  Why is that so likely?  Think about it for a minute.  If Bobo flops at CSU, or even has a rough time for a while (see this article for speculation that McElwain may have gotten out at just the right time for his career), how attractive is he going to be as a future head coaching candidate at Georgia?  And if he’s a big success out there, what happens when he starts getting serious offers at other P5 schools (or, gasp, SEC schools) while Richt remains the head coach in Athens?  To me, this seems like anything but a lock.

But that’s all down the road, right?  In the meantime, best of luck, Coach.  You’ve earned your shot.

Now the excitement begins! What will Richt and McGarity do? For all the talk of thriftiness within B-M, the proof will be in the pudding. How comfortable is Richt in really turning the offense over? So many questions will be answered about this program with one hire.

Turning the offense over? Do you think Richt has been calling the plays the past 5 years?

      Like

      • No, I do not think that Richt has been calling the offense. I do think that Richt provided the offensive plays that Bobo called. Will Richt tell the candidates, “We know how to score points in Athens. We are not looking to reinvent the wheel here son. This is your playbook, go get me some touchdowns.” Or will he feel comfortable turnover the reigns to someone new?

You apparently didn’t watch Georgia on Offense when CMR was effectively the OC and lone playcaller.

Any legs to the CJP rumors?

  5. If the JP rumors are true, the McGarity laws of economics are about to be tested big time. If Richt’s hand gets forced where he can’t substantially raise JP’s comp to keep him in the Classic City, things could get very interesting in Athens.

Bobo’s departure is about a promotion to lead a program. I’m not sure any amount of money would have kept him in Athens. If Pruitt were to bolt, it would be about nothing but money and commitment.

  7. It’ll be interesting to see if CMR goes the apprentice route (bring in a young QB coach and CMR goes back to OC and play calling) or turns the offense over to someone. If it’s the former, well joe cox has gotten into coaching. If it’s the latter going the nfl route would make some sense.

I wish Bobo the best. He did a great job for us, and deserves his chance.

Saying that, I agree with the Denver Post article. McElwain got out at the top and Bobo has a lot of work to do. Bobo is an incredible recruiter though, and if he can talk some kids into making the journey out west he will be successful. CSU currently has a couple (3?) good players, but the rest are Georgia Southern level.

So, Bobo needs to get recruiting because in a few years he will lead the Rams into the Swamp, and we all would love to see the Gators get beat by little old CSU!

Not a lock but I think Bobo was going to be in the mix when Richt retires anyway, and now he can make a stronger case for himself. Or a weaker case….who knows how he’ll really do. Either way it’s going to make hiring Bobo or not hiring Bobo an easier decision for Georgia when the time comes to hire Richt’s successor.

Agree. I believe he would have been in the mix but doubt he would have gotten it, his decision to leave conforms he shares the point of view that he needed to spread his wings and prove himself as a HC to get to the top levels of coaching. This couldn’t have been an easy decision for him but it is the right one if he wants a top job. And you are right, we will now know about his viability when the time comes.

I wish him well, he deserves the chance to prove himself and earned it. The job has enough opportunity for him to make it but the stories about following an inflated record of 10 wins seem to have validity. He may not set records there but the pressure will be less and he can demonstrate his own style as he gets to call the shots. Mike will always be a Bulldog, glad to see him get a group of fans that will appreciate his efforts. I am now officially worried about the 2015 season, one I felt held so much promise for. I have so little confidence that UGA and McFrugal will give Richt what he needs, nothing they have been doing says they will…nothing.

I know they lose some players, but they play five teams that combined for 14 wins last year. Add in Fresno State with 6 wins and San Diego State with 7 wins and I see plenty of winnable games to get the first Bobo year off the ground.

Sadly I do not ever see him coming back.

If he wins at CSU I see Bobo back in the SEC within 5 years–and likely not at Georgia. 14 SEC teams and there seems yearly to be turnover at HC at 1 or more of them. Those odds favor him going to a school other than Georgia. The moon and stars all have to line up correctly for that to happen.

      Like

      • CannonDawg

Agree, Mayor. And in 5 years he could come back to the SEC with something like a 5yr / $40M deal (or more) after having made >$10M at CSU. But hey, he could have stayed at UGA and been up to $650K/yr by then based, of course, upon his “whole body of work.”

Mikey ain’t no fool (but I think he’s leaving one behind at B-M).

I wouldn’t be surprised if they either promote McClendon or bring back Thomas Brown. Richt can bring one of them along as he did with Bobo, and it would be easy on the budget to free up room for more S & C staff or money to keep other coaches in Athens. Whatever they do, congrats to a DGD.

What this should tell us is that McGarity should be fired. Bobo wanted to stay but for more money. More money that should have been given to him after last year. McGarity would not even entertain that option. The rumor is Mcgarity has been jealous of Bobo’s relationship with some in the donar base. Fire Mcgarity now!

He loves Athens and Georgia. If I were making a million dollars (what he should have been offered to stay) to be in Athens at my Alma mater (the place I really wanted to be at) and my family loved it there and didn’t want to leave. Why would I go to Colorado State a team that is doing fairly well? A team that if I carry on the success I get credit for not making it worse. But if it deteriorates whether its my fault or not I will get the blame. Who wants to leave Ga. to go to Co?

To be a HC. If he wants to be a HC, then he leaves. If he has no goal of ever being a HC, then he stays. His taking the job should be strong evidence that he wants to be a HC (like his father).

And not to be overly pedantic, but the difference b/w 1 million and 1.5 million is not marginal.

Good for Bobo. If he ever has any chance of coaching at UGA he had to leave and prove his haters wrong. I hope we can get someone decent to replace him. Watch our defense be phenomenal next year but for us to have trouble scoring points. That will be the most Georgia thing that can happen. I hope Richt does not call plays again. Bobo was always better than Richt calling plays, which is one of the reasons the Bobo bashers never had much credibility with me. The main difference between their playcalling tenures was that Richt was generally backed up by good defenses whereas Bobo was on his own. If Bobo’s offenses had been combined with Van Gorder’s defenses we would have been completely dominant. On the other hand pair Richt’s offense with the 09; 10; or 13 defenses and we would be lucky to have won 4 games those years Regardless I’m looking forward to a dawgosphere where people don’t have Mike Bobo to kick around anymore. Best of luck to Coach Bobo, a helluva coach and a damn good dawg. I hope he listens when mama calls.

Ahhh the interwebs…land of made-up rumors. Here’s one I just “heard” (it was caught behind the North Korean internet outage, but was released by a Chinese dissident late last night):

Richt, fed up with the UGAAD, is going to suddenly retire, and release the entire 2015 and ’16 recruiting classes from their commitments. The other OC coaches will follow Bobo. Pruitt to get the top job to fend off the TAMU overture.

But hey…with all that talent in the state of Georgia, that’s no excuse to lose 2 games, amirite!?

No, no, you’re way off base.

I heard it from a source “close to the program” that McGarity is interviewing Mexicans at the Home Depot parking lot to fill the Offensive Coordinator position. He’s offering $9/hour and several are interested if he’ll throw in a free lunch.

As happy as I am to see Bobo promoted, I would not be opposed (at this time) to Bobo coming back to UGA in 5-8 years as HC, if CMR retires. I have said many times I do not want a new HC without HC experience. Bobo would be set up to be the next Goff if promoted from within. Good luck to Bobo, I honestly hope he succeeds.

I’m skeptical CMB returns as HC. Letting the longtime #1 assistant walk away without much effort to keep him says volumes. To me it seems obvious CJP is our next HC. He hasn’t been at UGA for a year, but has made an imprint on just about everything associated with the program.

I guess we’ll know a lot more about our future direction in the next couple weeks. Looks like its open season on UGA assistants. BM better open the pocketbook, or get ready for a revolt from the ‘nation’.

Westy, you must know something the rest of us don’t. That said, I would fall on my knees and kiss the ground in Sanford Stadium on gameday if Pruitt ended up as HC at Georgia. And I agree that Pruitt “has made an imprint on just about everything associated with the program” in a very positive way. If CMR (and in all honesty it may have been Bobo–CMR just not wanting to say so and throw Bobo under the bus) doesn’t make those bonehead end of game decisions the Dawgs would have had an 11-1 regular season, been SEC East Champs, and possibly SEC Champs and in the 4 team playoff. This team was that close.

We actually were that close, without our best player for half the season, all our deep passing threats on the sideline, a completely new defensive staff in place for their first year, and a secondary with 80% new, inexperienced blood on the field. Yet you, and about 15 other airhead renegades here would trash this staff and throw fate to the wind. Genius, pure genius thinking…do your kids know where you are? I am sure they are worried.

Congrats to Bobo, based on his performance he certainly deserves a shot. Hes been a DGD and I wish him the best.

Here’s hoping the transition to new OC does not affect our commitment from Jacob Eason, #1 QB recruit in 2016 class and our biggest get since Stafford. I read an article that stated since he committed in the summer he & Bobo have spoken on the phone every week. Dont really fear hom going to CSU, more that our offense changes under new mgmt in a way that makes it less attractive for him.

Here’s hoping for the best all around!

Also as a West Coaster, I’m all for GMG scheduling a 2 for 1 so we can go back to Colorado, which result aside was a fantastic trip in 2010.
