They are not alone.

As part of his “Spring football: 10 burning questions” national piece, Mark Schlabach writes that one of those is Georgia’s quarterback situation, but also notes that the Dawgs have company:

Six of the teams that finished in the top 10 of the final Associated Press top 25 poll in 2014 — Oregon, Alabama, Florida State, Baylor, Georgia and UCLA — will have new quarterbacks this coming season.

Of course, most of those other teams aren’t breaking in new offensive coordinators as well.  But none of those other teams have Nick Chubb as a security blanket, either.

It’s my understanding that we are keeping the majority of our playbook from last year (which leads to your second point regarding Chubb) which would lead me to believe we are not anticipating a big change regardless of who the OC is.

    • That’s playcalling, not talent evaluation. Nor is it QB development.

I’m not saying Schottenheimer will be a bust. But he is an unknown until we see what he does.

I agree with the second statement, but technically every offensive play call should be successful if it’s executed properly.

I wonder if it is just that simple. I’m thinking there is so much more than just Schotty picking up where Bobo left off in play calling. I understand that the scheme will be the same but there is…how he relates to the kids, how they relate to him, communication, who he chooses to be on the field during certain plays, does he call the right play against the right D, etc. If it is as simple as plugging in the next warm body, then why go through the pains of a good hire? Let the water boy step in and call the plays…

This is certainly the time of year when optimism rules and we’re all getting pumped up. Hope springs eternal. Unfortunately, I have a couple of friends who are NFL fans. Specifically, fans of NFL teams where Schottenheimer has worked. And neither has ever had one good thing to say about the man. Both expect our offense will soon begin circling the drain. This is not the happy talk I want to engage in at this point in the year. And boy do I hope they’re wrong. Not having watched the NFL for many years now, I don’t have an informed opinion. If this turns out to be a Grantham type hire that will truly be unfortunate. My gut feeling is that what we’re seeing is Richt attempting to build the momentum necessary to sustain a top four ranking and earn a shot or two at a national championship before he retires. I’d hate to see things go the other way for him or our team.

A number of things give me hope:
          1. The offensive talent that Schotty had at NJ was absolutely terrible
          2. Richt is a fantastic offensive mind and I trust that he can identify a solid OC
          3. This hire wasn’t made out of desperation when the program was in a tenuous position like the Grantham hire was – I truly believe that Richt got his first choice

And look at the idiots that say Bobo did not know what he was doing? He only led the league in scoring last year. Look O-Coordinators always get yelled at, called stupid, boring, and can predict their plays.

The main thing changing offensive coordinators does is give writers something to write about.

  3. If 1 of the 3 QBs are serviceable from day 1, this offense has the potential to be very potent. I think Richt wants Ramsey to win the job because he’s the type of QB that thrives in his system. I want to see how far Park has come in a year at G-Day and, especially, see if the wheels are as good as many have said. Bauta seems to be a guy who has worked really hard to get the most from his talent, but I’m not sure he’s the guy. The big question this spring is whether the loser of the QB race (Ramsey or Park) decides to transfer after the spring with Eason on the horizon.

    • We have some solid players at quarterback on the roster and a number 1 qb coming in. It seems like we should be able to develop this talent into an SEC quarterback. We’ve had a lot of qb’s in our stable before, like when Donnan arrived. Daniel Cobb, Usry, Jon England, Quincey Carter, Nate Hybl and walk on Cory Phillips. After the exodus (Hybl won the Big 12 with Oklahoma and MVP), we were down to a post surgical Jon England, Phillips and there was talk of Terrance Edwards playing qb a la Hines Ward backing up Carter. When Richt arrived he smoothed things out at qb and helped both Greenie and Shockly develop their skills. I’m not bit sure but I heard that he said no to Quicey ‘throw it over their head” Carter. And Carter moved on to the pro game. But that could have be internet chatter.

I was told Richt welcomed working with QC, but told him he wouldn’t be guaranteed the starting position.

Donnan recruiting QC and guaranteeing him the starting QB spot was the biggest mistake Donnan made as HC at Georgia. He already had Hybl and Cobb on the roster (Hybl became the starter at OK and Cobb, who won the JC National Championship as a soph, started about half his games as a senior at Auburn) and they both left when QC was given the nod. Trivia question: Who was the last Georgia QB to get a National Championship ring? Answer: Hybl, when he was at Oklahoma.

          • To be fair Nate Hybl rode the pine his first year with the Sooners and it was Josh Heupel who quarterbacked the 2000 Sooners to a 13-0 season and won a National Championship victory. over FSU. The Seminoles OC Mark Richt’s offense finished the regular season ranked first nationally in total offense (549.0 yards per game),first in passing offense (384.0 ypg) and third in scoring offense (42.4 points per game). Trivia question: Who was the last Georgia Coach to get a National Championship ring? Answer: Richt, when he was at FSU.

This is actually another reason why I could see the starter not being named until sometime in fall camp, even if one is clearly ahead coming out of the spring. Keep the guys interested and focused. Would be awful if one is named the starter, so the other jumps ship after the spring, then have the starter go down to injury in fall camp or early in the season.

I will just be really surprised (for a number of reasons) if we know who the starter is gonna be coming out of spring ball.

But to your point, even if not after spring, it wouldn’t surprise me if the loser of the battle between Ramsey and Park were to leave next winter, after the season.

For whatever reason, maybe ignorance or hope, I’m not really worried about out QB situation. Other than a couple of times, Richt has always had good QB play, I think he is very good at evaluating and coaching QBs.

As to the question of Park or Ramsey or Bauta transferring, if they do, they do. Eason is still an unknown. I can recall many “superstar” QBs who have come through Athens over the past 45 years who never set foot on the field. I hope Eason is as billed, but I’ll have to see him in action before I anoint him the QB of the future at Georgia.

Jacob Eason is gonna be fun to watch! Can’t wait to see him between the hedges. If he’s only a fraction as good as what’s on tape he’ll be one if the best QBs to come thru GA

I think 10 wins, plus or minus 2, seems about right, given what we know now. I think the floor is higher than say, 2010, but I don’t see the ceiling being as high as say, 2002.

Well don’t go too far out on a limb. So you are saying we could be anywhere from a very disappointing 8-win team to an outstanding 12 win team. If you make the range wide enough, I’m sure you will be correct.

So, you’re saying I shouldn’t predict us as a 6-win team, plus or minus 6? 😉 Yeah, I know I haven’t ruled much out, other than total disaster and a National Championship, but there’s a comfort at least in thinking that 8 wins is the floor.
