”I’m not sitting here saying we have to name a starting quarterback by the end of spring.”

Jacob Park’s getting some love.

”Park is a shifty cat and he can sling that ball,” linebacker Jordan Jenkins said Wednesday.

Shifty?

”Oh, he’s quick,” Jenkins said. ”I’d compare him with maybe a taller version of (Missouri quarterback) Maty Mauk. Trying to get him down on some plays when he stretches it out definitely can be difficult. He’s shaken quite a few of us.”

Park also made an impression with his leadership while on the scout team.

”He takes pride in what he does,” Jenkins said. ”If one of the offensive linemen on the scout team wasn’t blocking, he doesn’t let it go. He takes it personally that they’re not blocking, and he holds them accountable for it.”

Park’s attitude also impressed Richt.

”You can go over there and pout or you can go over there and try to get better and also try to help your defense get better,” Richt said. ”That’s what his attitude was and we were very pleased with that. I think it served him well and now it’s time to let him compete.”

So when will Schottenheimer weigh in?  Remember, he didn’t see last year’s scout team.

I suspect we’re in for a bout of epic trolling here at GTP after the G-Day game.

When I read that, I just assumed Richt said it. I did a double take when I saw the quote was attributed to Jenkins. It looks like Richt’s lingo is rubbing off on him.

I don’t know how you could qualify having an opinion about our starting QB as trolling this year. I get it that calling for Hudson Mason when Aaron Murray was a Jr or Sr is just ridiculous trolling. Nobody’s proven anything going into this season. They all deserve a look and having an opinion on any of them after the G Day game is completely justified in my opinion.

    • I’m not saying anything about having an opinion. Shoot, I expect I’ll have a few myself.

But do I expect to see a bunch of weird ass comments about QBR and other nonsense? Yes, I do.

Whether it is based on QBR or not, what I expect to see is a sizeable portion of the fan base who will (once again) be 100% convinced that UGA chose the wrong QB. The fact that such notions have been proven universally wrong over the entirety of the Richt Administration won’t matter one bit.

If someone wants to criticize Richt, there are plenty of reasonable discussions to be had, but the choice of starting quarterbacks isn’t one of them in my opinion.

I strongly agree. I have my suspicions of how it’s gonna play out, but if it plays out differently, I won’t give it a 2nd thought.

When JoeT3 was starting we were calling for Stafford, of course we had Cox save the team vs UAB that season when we beat them 14-10 (WTF offense). That year we had a really good D, if I recall correctly, we got the honors of giving ole Spurrier his very first ever home shutout.

Cox’s off-the-bench victory in ’06 was against Colorado rather than UAB. Still, a pretty bad Colorado team. He subsequently go the start against Miss St on the road and got benched again.

                • It was Ole Miss. We barely beat Miss State at home later that year after losing to Vanderbilt on homecoming. Stafford took over after the Tennessee game that year when it was clear Joe T wasn’t going to be the answer.

Amen brothers. My favorite is not predicated on anything except liking one guy’s personality over another. I will support big-time the choice that Richt will make. I will bet that the team will like it as well.

Richt’s failure to bench Mason after USCe and play Ramsey now denies us a natural #1 QB and forces us into this controversy. #FIRERICHT!!11!1!

You mean something along the lines of “well Ramsey played better in the 2nd quarter of GDay so he is OBVIOUSLY the better QB and should start” ? Sorry, couldn’t resist….

“Coach Schotty” is the wildcard in this QB race. I can’t see Richt not giving him the final say so all 3 guys have a clean slate regardless of what we have or haven’t seen or perhaps never will see. After 14 years we all were inside Bobo’s head but it will take us a game or two to figure out what Schotty is thinking.

Ever who it is, their tenure doesn’t have to be two years and the backups won’t be regarded as such. I’d say our QB bunch has a group strength unmatched in the SEC and cfb. ‘Backups” would apply to those who are behind these three.

I agree with this. Ramsey was put in a unfortunate situation last year with Mason going down. I expect the three guys to compete, get lots of reps and do fine. They wouldn’t be our quarterback depth otherwise. Plus and a big plus, there is a great group of rb’s there.

      • I agree. I hated the first play call when Ramsey came in the game cold. It was like Lilly had decided he was taking a downfield shot after the failed fake punt. It was like no one told him Ramsey was having to go into the game at the last minute.

While most football fans rightfully worry about having to find a new QB, Mark Richt’s proven ability to find and coach QBs eases my nerves, but with Bobo gone, things do get more uncertain in that regard. We also have no one named Joe Cox on our roster, so it’s gotta work out.

I would put my money on Park to start, but that’s a guess not an opinion. Added to his skills is the possibility of a four year career, and Richt loves continuity. His whole career at UGA we’ve either had a Frosh/RS Frosh go the distance or a senior fill in before the next guy. Don’t the descriptions of him remind you a little bit of young Murray? Murray made a lot of his freshman year yards on his legs. If Park goes four we have Eason as a senior to carry us to the next guy.

    • I’ve heard the chatter from a lot of HS coaches that Park is a gamer.

How about this — Park is the gamer, wins the job and starts this year and next year while Eason redshirts. Park turns pro at end of that year (because he is good enough to) and Eason starts as redshirt soph.
        I like it…

While I like Park, the ability for a QB to stay in the system for five years and not go Pro are slim. If he’s not good enough for the Pros after two more years on campus at the helm, we are in worse shape than anyone could imagine. Would think that after I yr on the bench, Eason could give him a good shot at running the system.

This QB quandary will be a great problem for us to have in the coming years.

As you stated in an earlier comment, I will be happy with whichever QB the staff picks. I have no ties to any of the three and feel each is capable of making a case during spring/summer camp. We are blessed with QB talent, but my gut tells me there is more to Park than many are giving him credit for having. He is my dark horse favorite at this point, I really like it when the first teamers on defense respect the guy from what they saw all of last season in practice.

What I like is the wildcard of having Schotty coming in with no prior bias besides what he will see. The promise of a clean slate seems more honest this season so those guys will have their shot. Also glad to hear they feel no pressure to name someone in Spring because of some perceived deadline, absolutely no need to rush this.

I definitely like the looks of Park. A quick release and good mobility. I love having a ‘pocket passer’ with mobility that can hurt the D’s respecting the pass.

Think “glass half full” Aus.. We come out smoking this year on offense with a defense that gets the ball back quickly and in good field position, and “Schotty” is never used in a vain way (except by the Fire Bobo/Richt crowd, and they will fall below 15% this season as we order rings for all the players and staff.) Of course, it could get Schotty if things don’t work out…I just don’t see that happening with this team. With all the tragedies we survived going into, and during, that 2014 season we came out with our heads held high, something just tells me we turned the corner and are headed up. Another round of Kool Aid please!

I will be surprised if a guy as highly touted as Eason will be just a one year guy. If he doesn’t get the playing time soon enough he’ll be thinking transfer….maybe.

As much as we all are anxious to see Eason here, that shouldn’t diminish our respect for the QBs we have. Think Eason is a competitor and he is doing a nice job of recruiting for us. You don’t put a couple years into that and then flash elsewhere, no matter the threat. He should expect to be redshirted his first year unless he has mastered our play book better than an experienced QB already in the harness. If he isn’t redshirted, then we got ourselves a great one who will need great backups.

I refuse to sit and chew my nails worrying about what 18-20 yr olds will do.

  11. Am I just being insanely naive by saying I fully trust our coaching staff to figure out the best guy to start next season?

While I do think our staff occasionally is a little too biased towards seniors who “put their time in” and “were loyal to the program”, at least this year that’s not going to be a problem.

NOTE: I don’t think those reasons in quotes above are why Hutson Mason got the job. I trust their judgement that he was our best option this year, and frankly, I think he performed very well.
