Talent isn’t everything.

At least not if you’re comparing Georgia to Michigan State.

Wow. That was useless. A three year sample size? Someone should ask them to compare Sparty with the Buckeyes. That comparison prolly won’t fit their opinions.

  2. Michigan state would go 4-4 at best in the sec. The import of msu’s win in Tampa is about the same as la. Monroe’s and uab’s over Saban’s teams. Its meaningless.

4-4 huh? Didn’t we say the same thing about Mizzou before they strolled into the SEC East and won 2 out of 3 division titles? That old argument does not apply today.

      • They went 2-6 their first year so I guess you could say I overstated the Spartans chances.

The problem with the lower talented teams playing a season of big boy football is that they haven’t seen it and they have no respect for the higher level they are facing when they play a motivated big time sec team. Mizzou has adjusted remarkably well to sec play so there is a transition. I guarantee you that their off season has taken several steps up since they went 2-6. Would msu stay at 4-4 over time? No. But first time through, like mizzou, they’d get crushed.

Another example of that was the notes dame game vs. Alabama. The rosters were not nearly as mismatched as they appeared. That nd squad plays a season of sec ball and then another and they could have been respectable. But playing a big boy team that wants it and it’s a mismatch. Picking random bowl games where one team just doesn’t give a shit is meaningless. Like bama’s losses to Utah and Oklahoma and ours to West Virginia. With a natty on the line those teams take a beard own. Now Bama getting beat by the Buckeyes meant something. On the other hand talent isn’t an issue in Columbus. That team could survive an sec schedule IMHO.

Good points. In 2012 ND actually played a tougher sch than Bama. They were ligit, just ran into a buzz saw.

Sorry, but much of this is SEC hot air. Look, I agree that this is the best conference. But there are good teams everywhere. Now that we have managed to tap dance around the Mizzou success with some remarkable BS, explain how a mediocre Big 12 Texas A&M came into our unbelievably dominant conference and went 11-2 in the tougher of the two divisions and beat our National Champs on their home field.

The idea that MSU would go 4-4 in the east is laughable and shows the same sort of bias that we used to rightfully complain about with the National press (i.e., 2006 and Florida vice Michigan for the BCS title spot). I don’t think the comparison with UGA is fair on multiple grounds, including a generally tougher regular season schedule and that 2013 season in which injuries completely gutted the season. But Dantonio has done a fantastic job and Michigan State can play in any league and challenge.

Pointing out that they went 2-6 in their first year of the is “remarkable BS?” Are you saying that Pinkel turned 2-6 into two division titles via recruiting? How well has A&M done without Manziel? I’d say that A&M’s immediate success had a lot (maybe everything) to do with him. They did lose 59-0 in their first SEC game vs. Alabama without him so perhaps that isn’t “remarkable BS.”

I’m not saying that there aren’t some decent teams out there. I don’t think that there are any in the Top 10 that would stay there with an SEC schedule save Ohio State.

That is homer nonsense and you know it. Did Mizzou suddenly become a real SEC team in their second year? And what does Manziel have to do with anything? A&M was crappy in the last few years in the Big 12 and immediately came in and won. Excuses, excuses and more excuses. Michigan State would absolutely compete. They just beat the same team in the Cotton Bowl that TCU lost to. I think TCU beat the ever living hell out of some team in Atlanta last Dec 31. Can’t compare scores in CFB, but I think you can get the idea.

And I can’t stand MSU or the Big Ten. But damn, give folks credit. Hard as it might be to believe, there are good teams everywhere in the country.

Manziel’s first year playing was 2012. He had a huge impact on that team. A Herschel type impact. I think MSU is a great, and pull for them in the Big Ten. Stating “And what does Manzeil have to do with anything” is not helping your case.

He had 10,000 yards in two seasons. Seven SEC teams didn’t get 5000 yards of offense last year. You are fucking stupid. It can’t be fixed.

Do you really think MSU would be 4-4 playing in the SEC East? I don’t know how you can say that they would be 4-4 with our schedule. UK, Vandy, SC, UT, UF, and Mizzou would all have a very difficult time beating MSU, in my opinion. Dantonio has done a great job with underwhelming talent, and I think he would do very well in the East this year.

      • Three of those teams beat them and we do too then they have 2 west teams. The grind would get them. I’d reverse it. How would those east teams do in the big ten?

I know this is all theory and opinion, but I don’t think 3 East teams beat MSU. I think we would have our hands full with them, to tell you the truth. The big ten? OSU may be better than anyone. MSU and Wisconsin are good. Penn State and Michigan are getting better, I think. I think UGA would compete for second, along with MSU, but I don’t think anyone else in the East would beat these other teams.

I agree that the SEC is a better conference. But our strongest teams, by and large, play in the West. MSU, I believe, would be a contender if they played in the East. UGA is the only East team with the recent pedigree to match MSU, in my opinion.

Missouri played in the Big 12, probably the second strongest conference top to bottom. Sparty plays in the Big Ten which has a bottom half that envies the ACC’s bottom feeders.

I was at that game, we were up by 2 touchdowns and a safety at the half (16-0). Crowell had taken himself out of the game after the first series or so and Richard Samuel was still hurting from the Florida game, Our run game was basically Boo Malcome, and they zeroed in on him and loaded the box in the second half. Blair Walsh missed the game winner in regulation, IIRC.

Credit goes to MSU for not giving up, but that game would have been well out of reach with one decent running back. If that game is the basis for the article….well, I don’t know that there’s even much to discuss.

      • I don’t want to beat it to death but who exactly is responsible for roster management for the Dawgs? Yes, the Dawgs were down to walk-ons at RB by the second half of the bowl. The Dawgs also played that season with 65scholarship players.that is why there was a shortage at RB. In those days there was a shortage at some position every year. CMR seems to have fixed that roster management problem now though.

Washaun Ealey decided to transfer and Caleb King became academically ineligible; it doesn’t invalidate your point, but we were in pretty decent shape at RB & without the benefit of a crystal ball to see those two events coming.

        • The game isn’t close except for turnovers. The 2nd half of that game was not Aaron Murray’s finest hour in a Georgia uniform. Bad interception and a bad fumble led directly to the 2 TDs that let MSU back in the game.

Terrible overtime management by Richt and Bobo didn’t help …

Aaron Murray has great numbers and is loved by many but the truth is; in most big games, he was good for three turnovers. One was usually a pick six or a fumble near our own goal line.

MSU physically dominated us late in that game and our coaches did a terrible job in the second half and overtime. The SEC has some of the best teams in the nation but MSU would do just fine in the East, most likely finishing ahead of us many years. This season, other than us, who in the East mght be better than MSU?

In the East possibly Mizzou and/or UT but likely not. I don’t think SC or FU and sure as hell not UK or Vandy. While we’re at it–on the West side clearly Bama is better and probably LSU, maybe Auburn and Arky. I don’t think Ole Miss (in spite of all the hype), aTm or Missy State. So in the SEC as a whole that makes Michigan State #4, 5 or 6 in a 14 team conference and probably #2 in the East. That ain’t shabby.

Sunday afternoon..I was lulled into actually watching College Game day.
The SEC bashing is at an all time high.
Desmond is a f’ing idiot..and that’s being kind. He picked VT to win the ACC and TA&M to win the SEC.
Corso and Herbie picked LSU to win the SEC..and Herbie pickedd Tenn to win the SEC East. Georgia was never mentioned.
The other guy..the moderator, I suppose, picked the B1G to put two teams in the college football playoffs.
There was never any comparison of strengths of schedules, and how it should effect picks..unless it was done while I was snoozing or watching my dog lick his nuts. The show was grueling.
I hate to say it, but these jokers have me believing that we will need an eight game expansion in order for the SEC to get a fair shake…because they’re all about convincing everyone that the SEC is a paper tiger in a room full of great BiG and Pac conference teams…Auburns loss to Wisconsin, Alabama’s to OST..and the Ms teams Mssteps in the bowls are how they explain all of this.
Of course, there can never be enough praise of ND..it was sick.
I honestly believe that, except for maybe Lee C. sometimes…these guys just say what they hope happens and try to justify it by grasping at straws.
    Anyone else watch?

yeah you can look up a team that recruits at the level of MSU and see what they record would be in the SEC. It wouldnt take but a second. The idea that they could complete in the SEC without SEC talent is laughable.

Looking at 24/7 recruiting rankings MIch St. would be an upside of South Carolina and the down side of maybe kentuck/Arkansas in the SEC. That is the level of players that they have. Even with them being coached up A LOT they are still not a top of the division type team.

Yeah, sure. A&M sucked in the Big 12 and their FIRST year they went 11-2 in the brutal SEC West and beat our National Champs on their home field. As has been mentioned before, Mizzou has been in the league for 3 years and gone to Atlanta twice. Your arguments against Michigan State are laughable. Why is it so hard to give credit when credit is due? Seems like a bunch of people have Sabanitis…excuse after excuse every time they get their butts handed to them.

You just enhanced Dawgphan’s point, Bob. Mizzou and A&M ARE SEC teams and very good ones. When the SEC expanded, they didn’t want cupcakes or lightweights like the BiG and ACC are loaded with. They wanted quallity and they got it..as you inadvertantly pointed out.
Go back to Aug. 27th GTP and explore the post “Strength of Schedule, 2015 style” and you may start to GTP.
Credit where credit is due? OK… Michigan State is a pretty good BiG team.

That being said…Mizzu will not maintain the level of play if the recruiting stays the same. Mizzu, in there honey-moon period, has had the lighter side of SEC schedules plus being taking lightly by SEC teams. The old SEC teams have not built an aggression toward them yet…but it’s coming. We will see how Mizzu fares as they rotate into some of the tougher Western opponents AND UT and UF get back on their feet. We all know the East itself has been down with UT and UF not being the power houses they once were. (I know UGA has not taken advantage but let’s save that for another discussion.) My disclaimer is…I like Mizzu and Pinkel. I do not understand why Pinkel can’t recruit better. He seems like a good coach.

When anti-SEC fans hear us boast the SEC’s strength, they get the picture that we expect an SEC team to never lose…to anyone. We are all aware of quality teams all over the country. And we are aware of particular miss-matches when it comes to the style of developed in players for a certain style of X’s&O’s. (Example: TCU vs Ole Miss). But…the argument is…these great teams of the other conferences don’t have to prepare for AS MANY tough games as they would if they played in the SEC. AND, lesser physical Saturdays EVERY Saturday, means less injuries and mental anguish. AND…they don’t have the recruiting pressure they would have if they played in the SEC. Where are the best players going to go IF they are willing to play on the frozen tundra’s up North? OSU & Michigan are going to get their pics first…then the rest of the B1G teams gets what’s left. So the disparity continues year after year.
Are we talking about a HUGE difference in the quality of teams? No, but is the SEC still the best conference as a whole?…well this is one fan that thinks so.

  15. Just a junk article with lazy thinking and comparisons. Sounds like something that could of come out of a local sports talk website–or the take of a radio host looking to beat the bushes for some Richt bashers to stir up shit. Wake me up when someone starts talking about Richt’s undersigning, hiring and recruiting shortcomings. This shit is so played out. The SEC is so much about context…what is your schedule like? What toll will this take on your team week to week? Who are you playing this year that has recruited as well or better than you? Is Penn Wagers reffing? Who is hurt? What are the coaching/recruiting shortcomings that can be taken advantage of by a equal or better opponent? Its not about taking a shot at a team by plucking some other team who is in a completely different situation.

They just have a bully pulpit and are using it, but do you notice how they laugh a lot with their outrageous pronouncements, unlike past years when they stated their picks as if they were carved on Stone Mountain? They are no better nor worse with their picks than you or me except this year they really reached and got into the silly zone..

The CFP seems to have continued what the BCS started, it has devalued the bowl games. When Saban said that his team did not play well against Utah and Oklahoma because the players didn’t care once they were out of the BCS he was right. With all the hype about the true National Champion, the players know that if they are not in the four team playoff, the bowls don’t matter. When the players are disappointed they usually don’t play well. They get to go to the bowl and enjoy the entertainment and the swag but the game is just an exhibition. If your team is full of guys who know they are going to the next level why get killed in this meaningless game. USC playing and losing to GA Tech in the Sun Bowl was the most obvious example of one team NGAS about a bowl I have ever seen. We are now in the brave new world of the CFP and until we get in the final 4 or they expand it to a size where we get in, I wouldn’t count on many tremendous bowl games for our entertainment.
