Hard times in Columbia

You know, I’m actually having to give some serious thought to displacing Vanderbilt as the lowest ranked team in my SEC Power Poll vote.

And judging from this, I’m not the only one.

Former South Carolina safety D.J. Swearinger, who was a part of some of the best defenses in USC history, tweeted his displeasure with what took place in Athens.

“Yeah that was my last time watching Carolina (probably),” he said. “I’ll watch when I hear they playing like Carolina and not the weakest team in SEC.”

I think Swearinger was an English major at the chicken college.

I spent some time reading the SC message boards last night and today and it was brutal. Yeah, I know, consider the average message board client, but even the loyal supporters and optimists are worn down. Rightly, they wonder why they should expect change with the expected results this year and the black cloud hanging around recruiting. There is clearly a major talent gap that has to be closed regardless of who is running the ship. Given their obnoxious fan behavior over the past several years, it couldn’t happen to a nicer group.

They are in a no win situation with Spurrier. He might hang around and try and get 100 wins, could take 2 or 3 more seasons. They can’t really fire him, they’ve spent the last 5 seasons making themselves into the Steve Spurrier show and making their program’s identity a cult of personality of Spurrier. Their Spring game was a self orchestrated homage to Spurrier, he went on his crazy old man rant about how great he still is and made statements right before their UNC game about how they were going to be good this season. Their fans ate it all up.

They have a huge talent gap with us and Clemson and their fans don’t like losing to either one of us. That talent gap isn’t going to close any time soon. Even if they have a great recruiting class in February (which will be tough with a coach who is on the retirement watch), they won’t catch up with either of us.

Spurrier is becoming the old, washed up, punch drunk former champ who has a few fights too many and goes out as a tragic shell of himself from his champion days. The chickens can’t fire the best they ever had but they also can’t keep him and expect relevance in the near future.

Their 5 year run of being relevant is over but their arrogance and obnoxiousness will live on for a little while longer. Couldn’t happen to a nicer bunch.

I don’t think they can risk their program to get him to some meaningless number of Ws. I think Steve Jr’s contract is up this year, not renewing that will send him a strong message and might cause him to just walk away. Fans seem very bent about it and a rapidly growing number want both of them to leave ASAP. They realize the recruiting issue and him staying will only make the hole deeper when he finally pulls out.

Scorp, found your karmic bitches. Last seen on the SC bench when the 52 pts went up.

The ladies do like to deliver a comeuppance now and then, the smarter the mouth the higher their interest.

Saw a pitcher of Skai Moore sitting all lonely and forlorn on the South Carolina bench after the game…caption shoulda read “Bitched”

Hope they stay on that side of the field through October.

      Good hats help, too.

So 2010 is now to USCe as 1990 is to Baja Georgia? Kind of hard to believe that half of their bowl victories have occurred since 2011.

Shorter Swearinger: Once a Gamecock, always a Gamecock…unless they’re losing.

When they start playing like Carolina? What does that even mean? So those people really did think they were a national power because they didn’t suck for a few years. News flash Swearinger, this who y’all are. Put another way, welcome back to reality.

Another thing that will be fun, is that we get to pull for South Carolina against Missouri and Florida. I’m betting Spurrier figures out a way to beat one of those two, especially after watching Missouri mail it in at home yesterday.

Whoa, where do they come off thinking they set a standard of championship excellence and perennial winners?
Watching SOS of the sidelines made me think perhaps SOS should join Mark May on Sunday discussing the games.
Let’s not get to enthralled about beating SOS.
    The polls did not,
But I do not know of too many teams in the SEC who hung 52 on one of his teams over the years. And did not move a notch in the polls.
South Carolina, Tennessee, Missouri, Florida, Vandy and UK do not respect us.
maybe the DC and OC are trying to change that view..

  14. This is who they are, though. This is who they’ve always been. A few good years while Spurrier still felt like coaching doesn’t mean they aren’t still a bottom dwelling program. Maybe they’ll remember that after a couple more ass whippings.

Didn’t hurt to have their best defensive player in history, their best QB in history, probably their best WR in history, and one of their two best RBs in history all in that one time period. All about the jimmies and joes boys, the jimmies and joes. And they has all departed. Skai Moore might be the only defensive player that would make our two deep. Cooper would certainly start and play at WR for us.

After a 4 year hiatus as a ‘decent’ team (still no SEC championships), SC has just returned to their rightful spot in the SEC….right along side Vandy & Kentucky. It’s a Dumpster Fire or a Trainwreck. Feel free to pick what ever analogy you like. Can only go so long with out restocking the cupboards with talent. Gonna be a loooong year for the chickies. I think DJ is just not old enough to remember where SC’s football program has been prior to Spurrier coming to town. Instead of a hot seat watch, we’ll establish the Spurrier quits watch. GO DAWGS! GATA!
