I was wondering how they’d handle it.

With the games Fournette and Lambert had, I wasn’t sure who would be named the conference player of the week on offense.

Turns out they split the baby.

That’s fair.  And congrats to Greyson for an honor well earned.

Very fair. I hard to beat either of those performances.

I said on Monday last week, I’ll trust that the coaches know what they are doing with the QB and the offense after I see the USCe game.

    Welp, I trust them.

What was Greyson’s QBR for the one game? Saw a 176, but thought that was his average rating for all three games.

246.5. Total QBR was 97.8 (maxes out at 100). I’m guessing his adjusted QBR will end up being 100 or very close to it.

The 246.5 was what I was looking for. Thanks, that’s Biggus of you. What’s the highest

Saw three systems yesterday and none seemed to be based on the same numbering system. Guess the 176 is the three-game rating.

What a show he put on Sat! We can only hope for anything remotely near that in the future, but the good side for us may be that we are better informed as to the reasons for game-to-game variance and they all won’t be projected onto Greyson’s back. He’s proven to me that he isn’t ego-bound about his play when he owned up about less than average performances. Hope this solidifies his self-confidence with this team.

Patience is needed when watching the Dawgs and Lambert, just as it has been in the past with Mason and Murray. Glad Lambert is working out, but we can’t rest on his laurels.

Thanks to yall in the stands who cheered enough for you and me and you certainly made a comment on this team and visiting recruits. DGDs, one and all.

Part of the beauty of his performance is the pleasant and total surprise that it happened. Mason was efficient, and when Murray was on, he was lights-out. If either of them had a week with that sort of efficiency percentage, I would have been happy, but not really shocked. I am giddy about the possibilities ahead. Kudos to the Hoos for letting him ramble on down to Athens.

We all realize this kind of performance is nigh impossible to duplicate, but was the doubt erased to why he was selected to start and what he is capable of with this team in front of and behind him? It appears that linemen quotes about Greyson were right on the head, especially Theus.

Does anyone doubt the ability of our coaches’ decisions that have been correct right down the line?

Would the MM QBs please inform me about Greyson’s “tendencies” in this game? That is only a partial little snark and I would appreciate a serious answer. If it helps, pretend we nearly lost and that receivers dropped half their passes. Wrong-foot throws/ tells/ football grasp (glad no one checked that ball pressure) – dump it all on us. I know you watched closely, now come on and let us know more about poor technique and that we are ignoring our best QB in Ramsey. Consider it as cathartic on your behalf. I don’t want to start listing names of you Bertsperts, but some of us are going back to look. You too, Bluto.

And maybe you’re right… maybe Lambert is gifted with super vision and they’ve just been holding that back until Saturday. Or maybe he just locks on to receivers.

The real compliment here goes to Schottenheimer, who did a great job with his game planning. Throwing short passes negates the problem.

Although, maybe you’re right and Lambert will never miss another throw all season. I’ll bring my binoculars and let you know.

My, my…touchy are we? What I find tiresome is folks who maintain they can see things that may or may not be what is happening.

Unless you can see the quarterback’s eyes, all you can see is his helmet, which may or may not indicate where he is looking.

I have no idea about Lambert’s vision and have never said anything about it.

Nor have I said he would not miss another receiver all season…have no idea where that is coming from.

“Checking Down”, by definition, is when you move on to an outlet after NOT making the attempt to your primary.

QBs don’t make a habit of going through the full progression BEFORE deciding where to go with the ball. Generally, they eliminate and then throw. If you don’t have to eliminate the primary, you throw to him. If you can’t throw to him, you eliminate and move on.

Right. My guess (and I’m no coach) is that if a QB forces the pass to a primary receiver in tight coverage, and ignores a wide open easy ‘check-down’ receiver…the coach knows the QB didn’t go through the progressions as coached. That’s just my guess.

I’ll type it again : Greyson admitted that he got greedy on the play by going to Blaze who was already in the end zone. He admitted as much on the play, but that play shouldn’t color one’s thinking about the rest of his passes. We were originally talking about the extraordinary vision of the Senator and his inside knowlege about what Richt meant in his post game remarks. We are aware of the checkdown and the meaning, but I appreciate the extra education.

Makes for good discussion, but yall gotta keep up and ignore conflagratin’ buzzwords.

I realize if the primary guy is open you throw to him, Ben.

I also realize that – guess what? – Lambert’s not locking onto a receiver every play:

The quick throws that were there all night – really, the South Carolina defensive backs are going to be having unpleasant dreams about those slant passes for a while – were a great way to cut down on Lambert’s propensity for looking down his receivers. (Although, in his defense, he did a better job with checking off than he’s done before. It’s just that it’s still a work in progress.)

I’m not really sure what you guys are after here, unless it’s some kind of mea culpa that Lambert was great all along. Sorry if I can’t be more help with that.

So…has he improved in the last 3 weeks? Yes. Was he pretty damn good all along? Yes. Part of the sudden emergence of Lambert against SC was Schotty’s admission that he was holding back the playbook in the first 2 games. Shifting memes–how bad must Mike London be as a coach if he (1) couldn’t win this this kid at QB, and (2) is so stupid that he benched Lambert. Remind me, how many games has UVa won so far this season? If William and Mary had been allowed to play both William AND Mary, UVa would be in even worse shape.

If you would just say “he appears to stare down his receivers” I would be less tired, but again, from your seat I would say it would be pretty hard to see the quarterback’s eyes, so you could be right, but you could be wrong. Yes he stares them down. It didn’t matter much in the SC game bc their corners couldn’t cover our receivers when their lb’s were down for a blitz. It opened up the slants. My favorite GL throw was the one where he anticipated Rome opening up near the sideline (around the 3 yd line I believe), but even then he is staring down as he buys Rome time to develop his route.
The scariest throw was one from the right hash to the left sideline on another route GL was waiting until it broke open. He had open guys underneath but instead bought time for 81 to open up behind the flats holding corner and safety crashing from over the top. A better, faster safety, should’ve shut that down. The throw was impressive but the athletes in the secondary were not stellar. Everyone could see where he wanted to go. It was could the ball get there fast enough, which it did. Davis made a great play to hang on to the ball.

There is no such thing as “no way”, but the DB can see the QB’s eyes if he’s looking at the QB…in the case of Lambert, who has big eyes, this might be easier for the DB.

It is my contention that all you can see from the stands is the QB’s helmet direction which may, or may not indicate where the QB is actually looking.

He had the luxury to “stare them down” (as you term it) on those plays. He did some anticipatory throws as well so having patience for receivers to get open don’t match the “starin’em down” scenario, Hahira.

Fellas, really? I think we are arguing over semantics.

I think GL had a GREAT game and the luxury to stare down some guys believing they would be open. On throw after throw he simply did not have to check to a second receiver. Is that “staring them down”? Well maybe and maybe not. However, as I stated, on both Rome’s to the right side line and Davis’ to the left, it is obvious where he is wanting to go and he has to wait to deliver as he anticipates the route coming free, which they did. My point is, while it worked great this day, and it certainly did, we are not as bad as many thought after Vandy or as great as we looked against Cackalacky.
The test will come when he does check to a secondary route, will it be successful 65%, or whether he continues to thrown the anticipation throws that, on occasion, has him holding his eyes while the play develops.

Kudos to GL for a great day and kudos to the O-line and all the receivers/backs/te’s who helped him look great and have the great day He had.

We never had a QB problem to begin with, just a history problem at another place. When GL has a history problem here, then I’ll join you. Think Bluto is partially correct there, Scorp. Of course, Greyson has that luxury with the protection he gets. While I expect that sort of thing may happen at a time when we need it badly, it doesn’t touch our admiration of Greyson’s accomplishment last Sat. Just shows to go you that the qualities that Richt and coaches saw and chose are right on. He already has proven that he can take it when the D pours through the line by his game at FSU last year. So I think we can put that rock back into our pocket.

I’ll bet that the jitteriness will leave that former Va QB since he now is a Dawg and he should and will be appreciated for all the Dawg things that he does even from the early doubters.

Thanks, Senator, but when did you begin to believe that I wouldn’t want to hear all your downer comments about our QB? The questions I have are: 1) how many times, if any, did Lambert have to go to his second or third read? If the primary was open every time (save the incompletion), well we can’t expect that will continue. If he was going through progressions and hitting them like that, this could be a fun season. 2) how many times did Lambert change the plays at the line and, if he did, how did those pan out? If he’s able to diagnose and execute, once again, we could be in for a fun season.

My general thought is that we are probably not as bad as we were against Vandy and not as good as we looked against South Carolina. You do have to keep in mind that South Carolina has not seen an opposing punter in the first half this season.

Having watched Alabama play two games, other than depth on the DL and at ILB I’m not seeing a team that is head over heels better than us. We have better backs, a better top WR, better TE’s, better pass rushing OLB’s and I think we’re better at pass blocking. Bama would have the edge in run blocking.

If Lambert can keep the poise he had Saturday and we have the courage to keep throwing on first down, we could win going away. Winning first down is a huge key in that game and to do that you have to complete first down passes.

Right you are. His performance should be expected to be less than the almost perfect night he had and I hope all bloggers and other fans prepare to see that. Your upper on what to expect for the future and the take on Bama is right on.

We have everything to cheer for and we will wait for shit to happen before we propose that a player or coaches ain’t fit beforehand.

Hell I was ready to bury Lambert and the season after watching him in Nashville. I don’t know what changed. Maybe CMR has turned into the “QB Whisperer.” He went from Greg Talley to Phil Simms in a week.

My favorite throw was the one to Reggie on the sideline. Throwing over the corner and under the safety ain’t easy and he threw a strike in there under some duress.

One thing we know is that Bama will play man on Malcolm. Anybody think that their guy is better? I don’t. They need to target 26 over and over.

You obviously missed the second half in Nashville if you were ready to ditch him. Agree, don’t see many folks covering 26 with single coverage.

They can’t afford to overlook our 5* receiver while attemping to cover Mitchell and if they decide to, there’s always the TEs (the hair just stood up on the back of my neck).

What a perfect game he had with his receivers and I was glad to hear Greyson say that his overthrow of Blaze was intentional so that SC couldn’t touch it either. If you saw the photo of Blaze’s effort you saw Blaze make it look like it wasn’t a huge miss as well. Good on him.

With Michel getting into the act and if Greyson’s on, it will be a bad night for Bama.

He played for the entire game like he did most of the second half of the Vandy game. i was skeptical of him being able to put together a full game of that. I’m happy to be wrong.

Can someone confirm that Lambert’s completion streak is still active? I know the % completed record got the news at the end of the day, but I seem to recall he also took Bobo’s record for consecutive completions at something like 20. So that’s still going into the Southern game, right?

    Like

    • Cojones

Right, as far as total before missing, but the 20 total is for one game only. Also the number of passes thrown before an int is still on the boards as well as the total number consecutively w/o an int.

    • Biggus Rickus

Yes, the streak is still active. He’d need to hit his first 16 against Southern to tie the record.

I’m corrected. Thought that record was predicated only on the one outing and in one game (therefore he broke the Bobo’s record).

Oh, he broke Bobo’s record. I’m talking the NCAA record for most consecutive completions period. Some East Carolina QB hit 36 in a row over two games in 2011. The second of those games is also the single game record for consecutive completions in I-A, 26 in a row.

Wow – the previous record was 26 by Aaron Rodgers. Not often you see a record obliterated like that in a >100 year old sport.

At first I was like, “36? That’s it?” And then I thought how rare it would be to even throw 36 consecutive passes without getting a ball tipped or having to throw one away, let alone throwing 36 accurately with no drops.

I am looking for video of the game or, more specifically, video of MM being open underneath on GL’s one incompletion.

    Any help on this?

Look, I am glad we beat South Carolina like a rented…ah…pony? But it is just one game. I am praying we are still this excited at the end of October.

One good game does not a good hat make. 🙂

Cojo you never, ever talk about a hat till the big ole gal sings the last note.

But I will share this: I have a hat, red hat with a G, that was chewed on one side of the bill by one of the finest dogs that ever chased a squirrel.

Now I am absolutely not saying I know everything about hats, or that I am even an expert on hats, but it would appear that a hat chewed by a damn good dog would be a good hat, right?

I’m not sayin that dog-chewed hat is 3-0 or anything. 🙂

My red hat with the black “G” is wool, therefore I wear it on cold days. Figure I’ll start wearing it during those cold NC games. 🙂

First…the hype on Fournette is nauseating. Let’s see him match some of Chubb’s accomplishments against tougher competition and we’ll review. (“Reminds me of Herschel…”? Vern, please. Bill Bates vs Trigga Trey falling to the ground is no comparison…but I digress.)

Lambert made huge improvement, but remember Rick Neuheisel was saying before the game that the talent was there just from watching practice. He is certainly the product of all of the pieces working together…coaching, scheme, RB’s, OL, TE’s and even WR talent. He’s better than Mason, so he should be enough to lead this team through the schedule.

But the season still comes down to our D people!!! We’ll score 30+ points per game if GL will keep the ball protected. No bad interceptions, no throwing deep into triple coverage “just because we should”, no throwing wildly while taking a sack (that only works once per year and Ole Miss got their first). If we are going to beat Bama, UT, Mizzou and FL (and KY!) we need a junkyard dawg defense that holds the other guys to under 24 ppg. We don’t want to be in any shoot-outs because GL is not Aaron Murray.

Do this and we’ll be in Atlanta…against LSU. Epic in so many ways.

OK, maybe not at that insightful but astonished we’re not talking about it more…score with offense, but WIN with defense. That’s what’s been missing for too many years now. We’ll know by the end of October if we are healthy and have a D to be a championship caliber team.

P.S. Neuheisel today on SirusXM was talking about a legitimate case for UGA to be considered the best team in CFB right now. I’m sure Fbomb will agree…

I’m bullish on the ability of this team, but beating Louisiana-Monroe, Vandy and South Carolina is not enough to make me THAT bullish. They could easily lose either or both of the Alabama and Tennessee games. I guess since I always underestimate Missouri, I have to at least consider them a threat despite how awful their offense looks right now. Florida is Florida, but I still can’t see this team losing to them. Losing two in a row to Tech would surprise me, but I guess that’s possible too.

Seeing all the working parts of Bobo’s Machine working beautifully with a couple of shiny new cogs makes me bullish on Schotty’s Offense.

Seeing how Pruitt game-planned as well (Pharoh Cooper covered like a condom all night, D-line doing their trick and freeing up LBs to scurry around the backfield instead of rushing the line) shows me that he can plan around our soft spots from other games and he can turn’em loose when he wants to. I’ve been gun shy since the FU game last year, but his game planning is tailored so well that it’s beginning to fade as a worry.

Now, if we can just get STs into the groove, worries could go by the wayside, but not yet.

Overall, I’m bullish because of the depth that we have as snake bite protection that we haven’t had for several years. It sounds cold, (hope our players stay healthy), but if we get an injury to a big player(s), I hope we don’t twist our hands in grief and instead be confident of the player(s) taking their place. remember, we start seeing injuries when we are well into the season.

Short answer…yes. I don’t listen to him that much, and he likes to knock the whole “SEC is best” meme down while pumping-up the Pac12. But he did visit Athens, talked with Richt, knows what he’s watching during games and has a pretty good take on the game. So…if he wants to pump some sunshine our way, I’m holding buckets!

He’s been right about Lambert starting, that he could be special (not sure if the “Lambert for Heisman” quote was verified) so he does show some prescience on the subject. If he gets this correct (best in CFB), we should honor him with a Disney Dawg award.

Five will get you ten ( 🙂 ) that Neuheisel may be correct. He is in my book.

I think Fourette had a hell of a good day against a SEC foe. But come on man….sharing SEC offensive player of the week when Greyson Lambert set a NEW NCAA record for completion percentage with 20+ attempts against a SEC foe. Come on man……..I know I’m splitting hairs here to some, but I think Greyson should get NCAA offensive player of the week. I know I hear and read about his mechanics and staring down receivers, but he just set a new NCAA record……….that shit doesn’t happen every week.

I was super impressed with Schotty’s playcalling. Playmakers like Rome, Hicks, MM, Godwin, Marshall (of course Chubb & Michel) all getting in on the action. Avoided keeping the ball in Lambert’s hands too long. Used Chubb as a decoy, too. Positive yards on soo many plays. Can’t overstate how well we distributed the ball. It was fricken masterful!

scu’s heads are still spinning. sos had to be wondering ‘who the hell is gonna come off their bench and make a play next?’
