Welcome back, Uncle Verne and Gary.

To what should be no one’s surprise, Alabama-Georgia grabs the 3:30 game slot on CBS.

  1. Yes! I may have to watch it in a motel room in Irvine but it’s better than nothing!

Unfortunately those of us here on the left coast don’t have the sound off, listen to the radio option. But I still recommend the sound off with closed captioning versus listening to Gary and Verne root for alabama.

Georgia Bulldog app is free! You can listen to the game on the Bulldog Radio Network. Free! It’s how I “watched” (listened to) the South Carolina beat-down on Saturday, since I don’t have ESPN. =D

Absolutely no reason to sit in a hotel room alone in the OC area—plenty of options in the area to get out a bit and watch the game. For example, Newport Beach is just down the road from you…go to an outdoor bar with 77 degree weather and enjoy it the many views.

I mean, come on, its not like you’re stuck in Dothan or Albany.

Right. Its not everyone’s cup of tea, but that is one of the absolute best areas of the country with the best weather. Choosing to sit inside a motel 6 on a Saturday in OC is like going to Antigua and spending all your time in the arcade room at The Four Seasons Resort.

Get away from the Orange County Airport and change your plane to go out of Burbank. That’s next to Glendale. Did I tell you about the accomodations and places to eat near there? Oh…I did?

      • It’s worse than that! My sis lives right next to LAX and we’re flying there (free on (Southwest). I juts found out they are dong work on the road in LAX and it’s going to be worse than ever! of course we fly back at 5:30 am and have to be there two hours early so it doesn’t really matter!

Last time I was there (back in March) the work also included the airport itself, so don’t plan on eating at the airport.

Great. I got so sick of Gary Danielson during the Vanderbilt game, constantly riffing on Leonard’s ‘targeting’ penalty, and talking about ‘how close’ to targeting some of our player’s hits are. As if we go into the game looking to play dirty. He is such a moron. As is Uncle Verne….. They have zero skill at their jobs so their commentary becomes a TMZ war room chat. Pathetic.

Mute the game and turn on the radio? Or just mute it period. This is all within your control.

If we could sync the radio with the broadcast that would work.

          Yeah, the time-lapse is annoying.

          • Just Chuck (The Other One)

The time lapse gives Uncle Vern a chance to see the play completed before he describes it which they can then broadcast as if it is simultaneous with the play. Makes him sound much more intelligent. Imagine what the commentary would be like if he didn’t have this advantage. Really annoying that you don’t see the snap on TV until you have already heard the outcome of the play described on the radio.

Vern and the TV are both on a delay. he’s calling the game as he sees it. the TV signal and audio are both on a delay. So, they don’t watch the play and then make the call. that’s a ridiculous statement. He might be old and miss a few things; but he’s been calling games for 30 years. You can bark about his call but don’t make an uneducated statement.

Not hard with a DVR (or putting ESPN Gamecast up on your TV via Apple TV, etc.)…you just can’t be switching channels during timeouts. Helps to have 1Gigahz internet connection too.

They’re not so bad. Gary is usually pretty insightful and Verne is an institution. I’m guessing you’d probably think any announcing crew is out to get UGA.

Yeah Uncle Verne is getting old, but he and Danielson are better than anything the WWL puts out there, except for Nessler and Blackledge.

Agree 100%. Nessler and Blackledge are good. They are technically proficient, and I enjoy listening to them. But I don’t get why people don’t like Uncle Verne. He’s an institution. Maybe I’m a prisoner of nostalgia, but his voice will always be welcome on my TV. Danielson can get annoying sometimes, but I think his analysis is usually pretty good.

Agree, and Danielson is a very sharp color man. The targeting discussion isn’t on him.it is the fault of the rules committee at the NCAA, in other words the problem emanates from the schools themselves. Worthy ideal, poor wording and interpretation is why it is so despised.. And I still like Verne, he has given us enough good memories to justify a little “misspeak” during the game. Just wish it was a night game, we will need all the energy we can get against a very talented defense.

Did you really listen to it? He said the hands-to-face call on Leonard just wasn’t there and that Lorenzo’s call ‘by the letter of the law’ was targeting but he didn’t see it.

Danielson is one of best minds out there among color commentators. And he doesn’t seem get caught up in memes.

I agree, no fan of Verne, but Danielson is whip-smart. He predicts play-calls better than anyone I’ve ever heard, and he’s usually pretty fair in his bias. He thought Carter’s hit wasn’t targeting, he kept commenting on Carter wrapping up with both arms in a textbook tackle in the play reviews, going on to say that’s what happens when a 6’6″ guy tackles someone.

Danielson was certainly an accomplished QB, but in an interview talked about visiting with the coaches in the week before their telecast and getting private insight to formations and play calls he could expect to see. I think that is great homework. Pretty sure Blackledge does the same, but not so sure others do it (because if they do, it sure doesn’t show!). I wish Zeier on our broadcast would do more of that. He will often recommend how we should be doing something during the huddle, but I don’t know that he calls out a play just before the snap the way Danielson and Blackledge do.

That said…the media hates UGA! They always root against us! Ever since “the Dance”.

I’m not sure which Gary Danielson you’re referring to, but the game I watched he repeatedly stated that he didn’t believe it was targeting and disagreed with the call….

Danielson, while he occasionally comes off a bit smug, is the best in the business (along with Todd Blackledge).

As for the Vandy game, he said right away it was not targeting, as he Lorenzo didn’t lead with his head.

Set one TV on HD to watch and another on Digital to listen. That way, you’ve made up your mind on the play before you hear announcers tell you what you saw.

Jus’ helpin’ with my great teknickel nowlegg.

Yeah Verne and Gary do a fine job. I always enjoy the different perspective I get rewatching the game and those guys help fill things in.

I think that complaining about the TV announcers is just something that people do though.

Yeah, Ug. I thought they took our side of that targeting play and said it wasn’t. They also showed the previous yr’s game with those calls that were not targeting, but we got called for them wrongly.

This is probably the wrong spot to drop this…but can anyone explain to me why John Adams of the Knoxville News has a top 3 of Ole Miss, LSU and Texas A&M but somehow has the Dawgs at 14th?

In related…UGA has won its last 13 games in Sanford Stadium starting at 3:30 or later.

The West side of the SEC ALWAYS gets more press than the East. Maybe its warranted, maybe not. We just have to go out and earn respect from these people and beating lower tier teams is not going to do it. I will be very interested to see where we stand after the game with the elephants.

Fletch, it’s bad enough to listen to the WWL’s prognostications an opinions that are pregnant with bullshit without having to read evry Tom, Dick and Adams. We are better here at gtp picking the winners against the spread than those yahoos who rank and pick without knowledge.

I like the 3:30 kickoff time best of all. I don’t care who calls the game. I can get a nice amount of pre game tailgating in, watch the game and be home by 9:00 or so.

As I get older, Verne and Gary don’t bother me so much. Let’s face it, ALL announcers are brutal to listen to when you’re losing. I hate when we draw Andre Ware, but at least you can tell he knows a little about the Dawgs.

I’m not a huge fan of Verne but he is tolerable I suppose. Danielson I really like. Easily my favorite color guy on the air currently.

Anyone is better than Musburger, Palmer, and Huard. Those are the three stooges in my opinion. I’d rather mute the TV and listen to the radio broadcast that to have to put up with any of those three.

I have to agree. I really like Danielson. Insightful, and I usually seem to learn something. I think he’s great at explaining difficult concepts to the general TV audience, and as someone else said, he’s great at predicting play calls. 3:30 on CBS is by far my favorite slot for a Dawg game.

There will be a few big things going on in this game assuming we win this week and Chubb gets 100yds:

-Mark Richt’s chance to break Butts all time wins record
-Chubb’s chance to break Walker’s series of games with 100+ yards record
-A chance at redemption for the SEC Champ game loss and the Funeral Game
A chance to beat Kiffen after his vow to never lose to the dawgs

  11. All of the CBS games are also available for live streaming if you don’t have a TV handy, but you do have an internet connection.

Watched the LSU-Boogs game while on a long car trip this weekend and it worked great.

As long as ESPN Gameday doesn’t show up in Athens, I am happy. Hope they go somewhere else. They’re a jinx for the Dawgs.

Having just had Gameday at Tuscaloosa it seems unlikely they would feature Alabama again so soon. At least to me. Plus, does ESPN really want to have a CBS game as their marquee match up?

My understanding was that the SEC Network Gameday crew (Finebaum, Tebow, et al) would be in Athens for the Ala game.

Since CBS gets first choice,… well, … yeah. It’s the best game that will be played and televised this year. CBS just chose us two weeks in a row. Hell, why wouldn’t ESPN man up? Oh…I see. that ain’t what they do? But….but…they are the WWL (except in Tex where they have their own whatchamacallit).

A 3:30 start sure as heck beats starting a game at 9:15! Just guessing, but the CBS decision means we probably get the ut game at night (7:30 or 8:00), and maybe the mizzou game too – with espn is picking the start times. Then back to 3:30 for Jax.

Due to work, I probably won’t be able to leave for the game until around noon. This is much later than I’ve left for a game previously (other than a cupcake).

-How bad can I expect traffic to be?
-At that time of day, is there a preferred way to get to Athens from Atlanta?
-Any suggestions on parking? (I may have a spot at a friend’s apartment complex, but I want to have a backup in my pocket).
